Just got back from AnimeFest-- a relatively small con in Dallas-- tonight, after being there all weekend. Lots of fun, bought almost the complete set of the FMA pins. Very cute.

Anyways, the reason I'm posting this is because I got to meet two of the VA's for FMA: Vic Mignogna, who I'm sure everybody knows will be doing Ed, and Mike McFarland, who will be doing Havoc's voice.
Here's a couple pictures of the two sitting together at a panel; Vic's on the right, Mike's on the left: 1 2

They both seemed very nice; I can't say much of what I think of their voice acting itself since I'm not much of a fan of dubs, except that I rather liked Vic's voice as Gawl in Generator Gawl. One of the few dubs I don't mind. A friend who was in line for autographs a little bit behind me asked Vic to do his Ed voice, but all she could say about it was that 'it seemed nice,' which doesn't help much. He did mention something about how he had wanted to make Ed's voice higher, but the Japanese side of the pond-- who have apparently taken a great deal of interest in the choice of VA's for the dub-- told him they didn't want it that high.

Another thing he mentioned is that he's actually a really big fan of FMA-- he said it's the first show he's worked on that he's actually watched all the way through before hand, and researched a lot about. Mike also seemed to really like the show. That's pretty reassuring to me, at least-- hopefully they'll take extra care to make it really good.

Anyways, that's about all I have to say-- except that they're now selling sets of WINRY TOOLS-- yes, little tools that are supposedly like the ones Winry uses. This disturbs me.

Oh! and I also have a really cool towel now, with Havoc, Roy and Hughes. *huggles it*

*EDIT* Forgot to post the FMA cosplayer pictures. Not many of them, just Ed & WInry, and a different Winry. There were lots of people in the military outfits this year though, and several Ed's that I didn't get pictures of.

FUNimation VA's
I haven't met Vic yet, but I have known Mike for around 4 years now and he is also one of the two directors for FMA at FUNimation. I have heard Vic's recordings and they are at little lower in the voice than the Japanese actor but with all the same intensity, if not more. Mike is great too, he was the voice of Buu in DBZ and others that you might recognize. I play Mustang for FMA and its really only my second part at FUNimation, but one thing I have noticed is that from directors to actors, the cast and crew of FMA is heavy into the anime - more so than any other anime property that I have seen come through FUNimation. I think American audiences will be happy and cant wait for November for its release. Glad to see your interest in it already.

Wow, Roy's VA? For real?!

Re: FUNimation VA's
Yeah, for real. I really like this guy's site. I'm new to these sorts of things. But the level of effort that goes into these sights and those icons you guys have next to your names are brillant. You guys also say some pretty hilarious stuff.

Re: FUNimation VA's
I'm glad to hear that everyone who'll be working with it loves it so much-- it really is one of those animes that only comes along once every ten years or so. I really hope that y'all will-- for lack of a better way to put it-- take good care of FMA. It's got a special place in my heart, that's for sure.

And good luck with your role, too! Please do your very best! :D

Oh, and-- you wouldn't happen to know who's going to be Hughes' VA, would you? *grin*

Re: FUNimation VA's
Heh, actually I/ we dont know. One actor who is currently recording for Hughes is named Robert McCullum. But there is another, newer actor who they are recording as well and it seems they havent decided which to keep yet. I really share your feelings about FMA. We all were shocked at how compelling, passionate, dark and...well,...addictive that show really is. We have all been so impressed and are constantly trying to one up each other on who knows the most and who has got the latest FMA scoops. But your right, these types of talented anime come along every ten years like you said. I think thats why FUNimation has allowed SONY and Square Enix to be such a part of the creative process this time. They were adamant about how important it was that they stayed true to the original and to sure the fans are pleased as well. I'm hyped about the video game we just finished and I think the series will be even better.

Re: FUNimation VA's
I think its great to know that the actors are just as into the series they're doing as the fans. I mean, if you people weren't fans (or at least like the series you're working on) what would be the point of doing the voice for the series? It would be like, signing up for Biology when you'd rather swim with the sharks than enter that room. (I'd personally go for the Bio room than the sharks)

Fullmetal Alchemist is one of those rare series I'm very glad my friend introduced me to. Its the only series, both anime and manga, that I've been so attached to. Just about every bit of it, the story, the characters is just...woah.

Re: FUNimation VA's
Alright, thanks for the info!

Yeah, addictive is pretty much the right term for it. I was hooked already within reading the first *two* *chapters* of the manga-- before the anime even came out!

I really do hope the dub turns out well. Although I have to say that I prefer subs over dubs, there are going to be so many new fans coming in as a result of y'all's work, that I really want the dub to show the real quality of the show. I'm a little scared of how much is going to be cut, though. The show can get extraordinarily violent at times, as I'm sure you've noticed, and even though it's going to be on Adult Swim, I still worry.

Re: FUNimation VA's
But since there are some really violent moments in FMA, I take it that Cartoon Network is going to be editing some things? There's always a cut, dubbed version that airs on Adult Swim and later the uncut version is released on DVD and VHS.

They're going to take out a lot of blood, aren't they?

Re: FUNimation VA's
Um. So I guess Ed's leg and arm will be cauterized instantly when they get taken off, then.

Re: FUNimation VA's
Actually they wont be taking out as much as you would think. They used to do stupid shit like erasing any signs of blood from a dismembered limb, coloring blood black so it was less noticable, you get the idea. Since its on Adult Swim they can get away with more. I've seen the epsidoe where Ed loses his arm and leg and Al drags his extremely bloody body over to Auntie Pinako's asking for help and they left all that blood in - and that's a lot of blood. Now right when it happens, if you look closely at Ed's arm while he's explaining to Al what just happened, you notice blood pouring out of his little stump there. yeah, that wont fly - its the excessive gore that wont make it. Head's getting whacked off, close-ups of bullets to the head and brain (i.e. Greed's hideout at Devils Nest), and the fuckin AWESOME shot of scar blowing that dudes head apart as he stiffarms the guy in the face as he is terrorizing people on his motorcycle-gives em a little of the Ishbal 'Great Art' if you know what I'm saying...alas, that wont be there as well. But rest assured, the DVD will have edited, unedited english, and unedited japanese so everything will be cool in the end.

XDDD That's just EBIL.

My little sister always watches Yu Yu Hakusho on the Uncut and the one on Cartoon Network. She can actually point out where they airbrushed over the excess blood. .____________. It's a little scary. .---.

Re: FUNimation VA's
As odd and immature as that was, yes, Roy is my favorite. Of all the anticipation for the dub coming to the US so soon, something like this happens! I have to say that I'm a little surprised curious as to how you came across LiveJournal. Sure, it's a big community, but you don't always meet voice actors on a thread.

At first, I was a little afraid of what Funimation would do to FMA, but I guess I don't really have much to worry about.

Yay for Roy! (And Hughes too. Poor poor Hughes. *sniffles*)

Re: FUNimation VA's
Your right, Live Journal is a huge community. It was actually my first time on. I sometimes do Google searches on FMA to see what turns up and what fans are saying on their sites. I think its important for VA to know what the fans think about a series, and more importantly what they think about a speciifc role... especially a role as important as Roy Mustang. Its also nice to get feedback from people like yourself and see what they think of particular episodes, where the series is going, and what they feel certain characters motives are. Mustang is of course my favorite now, but before Mustang, I thought Hughes was the greatest character... he was so damn funny!!! And thats why I love FMA. His farewell episode shocked me and had me almost tearing up - a bizarre reaction for just anime right? A question for you now, how many episodes have you seen up to? I'd like to see how much you know.
