Hrm, question! :o
Do you think there's another reason for Edward to hate his father so much, besides the fault of his mother's death?

I hope that didn't spoil anything? XD There doesn't seem much to spoil except that I was going to post Ed's parents' names.

I just realized that most of my posts here have the mood of "curious". Well, except the one post I made and deleted because it was lame/stupid. I'm sorry for that, if you saw.

EDIT: Rofl, don't mind me here, really. I just realized I forgot to add the "Current Mood." XD

Edwards dad left when he was very young, so my guess is that it was hard on him. His dad was just never around. He had to grow up after he had left without a father. Not only that, I'm willing to bet that Ed had to take on most of the roles that his father would normally have at a very young age. Become the "man of the house" so to say.

In Ed's eyes, his dad just up and left with no concern for his family, I think. It probably killed him -- more than his own responsibilities -- that someone could hurt his mother and little brother by just up and leaving like that. I don't think it's all too far fetched for Ed to hate his father, ne?

I think he mostly just feels bad for Al and his mother. ; ; I'd be willing to bet that he thought at one point that if his dad had been there that his mother might not have died, somehow. Also, he left when Ed was pretty young, right? I think Al hardly even remembers him. After all, when Hohenheim remembers them, Al was still a baby. Ed probably just thought it was too sad to grow up without any father at all. ; ;

Those are just my ramblings, though!

I don't think there is anything to spoil. o_o

Ed hates his dad because he left on them without saying a thing or letting his mom know (or maybe she did? =O). The fact that he didn't come back to Riezenbourg before thier mom died and the fact that she had been waiting and waiting for him since he left abruptly somewhat fueled Ed's hatred for his dad even more.

I personally find that he hates his dad more in the manga than in the anime considering the fact that the one in the anime was 'dumbstruck' and had a reason for leaving that had to do with his condition and that he didn't think he was going to be gone for that long a period of time. The manga Hohenheim actually left and is currently being an actually evil mofo. (I think this one left to research the stone or to find it...I don't think his presence in Dublith some years ago that Izumi mentioned to the brothers has been explained yet)

Wow, I should read the manga since it's a different thing from the anime. :333

It's possible he felt in a way betrayed when he was left behind- he looks perfectly happy in the flashbacks and seemed to be very fond of his father at that time, and to be tossed away and forgotten could have added to his bitterness. Not to mention the fact that Hohenheim not showing up when they needed him most or even coming to the funeral was pretty insulting.

I think it also made Ed even angrier that his mother kept on loving his father right up until she died. In spite of the fact that he abandoned them, (cruelly, in Ed's eyes), Trisha loved him right up to the end, which pissed Ed off even more; if she had hated Hohenheim, like Ed did, Ed would have felt validated. Notice how pissed off he gets in SPOILER 44/45 when Al is happy to see their father, in spite of his leaving them?

I really think that it was hard to deal with a father not being around for so long. He had to be the "man" of the house and help around. I mean his father abandoned him and Al. Al was always talking about his father too so it would of mad Ed mad just to know his father never wrote to him or his mother while she was sick.

I don't think it's a spoiler since we knew right in the beginning Ed didn't like his dad from the start. Since you always saw him with his mom and Al.
Hikikomorithe_hikikomori on August 27th, 2004 12:39 am (UTC)
I think he also hates his father because of the father/son complex.

You know where a son competes with his father for his mother's affection? Ed and Al were always making things with alchemy and yet she was always comparing them to their father.

Also there's the possibility that Ed hates his father because he himself feels like he's becoming his father. (It's hard to explain but I feel something similar with my own dad) He strives to be someone that's not like his father and is trying to ignore on how they are very similar to one another

Because he gave Edward the short genes. =D;

Everyone has said the "serious" theories that I would have said anyways.
