So apparently, live action FMA is the real deal. :/
Found this at Pixiv (http://spotlight.pics/en/a/1338):

"Full Metal Alchemist, Live-action Adaptation Announced!

Full Metal Alchemist live-action adaptation is scheduled for Winter 2017 and its nation-wide roadshow has just been announce!
Full Metal Alchemist, or FMA, is a popular manga series that was serialized in Monthly Shonen Gangan from 2001 to 2010. The story is about the protagonist Edward Elric and his younger brother Alphonse as they set out on their courageous journey in search of the Philosopher’s Stone to get back the body they lost upon carrying out human transmutation.

It has also received an anime and movie adaptation, and is well-known and well-loved throughout the world, especially because of its action scenes and CG effects.
This time, we have a special feature on FMA illustrations in conjunction with the release of the news regarding its live-action adaptation.
Welcome to the world of fantasy in FMA with its unique characters and their outlook on the world. I’m sure you’ll rediscover your love for it!"

There's some nice fanart on this page too if anybody's interested. I just hope this live action adaptation isn't a momumental disaster as has happened before to other anime (i.e. Dragonball and, according to some, AoT). It would kill my soul for FMA to be done wrong like that. :(

It is the real deal, unfortunately, and I've been stuffing my fingers in my ears every time it comes up. >_<

There have been some live adaptations of series that the fans enjoyed (from what I hear; usually said in connection to Kenshin), but they do seem to be few and far between.

Personally I am probably not brave enough to watch it, but I commend the guts of anyone who is.

I suffered watching through the Sacred Star of Milos, and it's terrible art and plot. So maybe I can suffer through watching this? lol

Haha, I saw Milos, too, despite being a hardcore '03 fan; but I feel like this is just a whole different can of probably-unpleasant worms.

I love those Kenshin movies!! So here's hoping?! XD;

...But there are many things that go into making a good movie in general and a good adaptation and what-not... There were a number of people working on and acting in the Kenshin movies who had previous experience in historical dramas (including the Ryomaden NHK taiga drama, which was set not too fair from Kenshin era-wise), so there were a lot of aspects of it re: costume, locations, etc that could be reliably counted on, I think.

I have to say, I have never heard anything but good things about those movies from Kenshin fans! But what you said makes a lot of sense, as in essence they are genre films of a different variety than most manga/anime-to-film adaptations.

Too bad that all the SciFi adaptations have thus far fallen flat on their faces :(

I am not holding my breath in any way shape or form on this. Considering it took over 30 years for my other favorite anime to be live-acted and it tanked, and it's a lot simpler than FMA (and the characters were 99% Japanese in the storyline and didn't need dyed hair/contacts), I have no real hopes of this being good.

I've heard that all the actors will be Japanese and it will be filmed in Europe. So...it's going to be interesting.

I'm really hoping for the quality I saw in the Kenshin live action movie. That was awesome. *Fingers crosses* Otherwise I would be so upset. Especially when all my students will think it is probably awesome and yet they don't know the true awesomeness of FMA.

I'm also concerned that some people will think it sucks and thus not even give the anime/manga a try :(

I am also concerned about this. :( It could all go so wrong... Especially with the visual effects (automail cgi and Al). I'm just hoping for a miracle. I've heard that the cast will be Japanese (sounding good so far) so I'm hoping the crew will be similar and less western overcompensation with big explosions for lack plot or talent to take the already good material and run with it.

Does that make sense?

I love a lot of movies made in America and Europe, but their track record for taking something that already has an established fan base and making it look less then impressive is against them.

Hear, hear.

And the automail/Al's armor thing hadn't occurred to me, but now that you mention it, yeah.... >_< Especially as I am not much of a CGI fan in the first place, much less when there is that big of a gap to be bridged.

The literal first time I've ever looked at a cast and wondered why there aren't more white people, lmao.

In the wake of crap like Ghost in the Shell and ATLA it's obviously not something worth actually getting angry about, but it's a bit of a bummer that it won't be made with an international cast - not least because some of FMA's political/war commentary is directed at the west.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
