quick question...
3 Oct 11 is coming up soon. Does anyone have anything in mind that we as a fandom can, could, or even should do to celebrate this most august occasion?

I wouldn't know about anyone else, but I'll finally be finishing my "Night-Riders" fic, which is a combination Halloween/3 October story.
Barking at the windevil_little_dog on September 7th, 2011 02:59 am (UTC)
I usually post some ficlet or something on 3 October.

I don't normally do anything in particular and this year I will still be on the road home from AWA on 10/3, but I may do something special to commemorate this year. Seems fitting.
Athena: why so serioushikaru_9 on September 7th, 2011 05:20 pm (UTC)
Lol, you mean the hi-jinks at AWA won't be our celebration? XD

Hm, good point. I think Roo!Ed should do a photoshoot wearing only a pocketwatch. >:D
Hopepeace_of_hope on September 10th, 2011 04:49 am (UTC)
Going to AWA but no FMA cosplay this year, sad T______T
Athenahikaru_9 on September 11th, 2011 04:17 am (UTC)
Yeah um, no one wants to see that Ed is really a girl in disguise.

There's this which sounds like the most brilliant idea ever because we all get to webcam and say why we love FMA and then spam youtube with them.

I wish I had a better video camera >.

Anything that does NOT involve drawing an alchemy circle on the floor.
bob_fishbob_fish on September 7th, 2011 09:11 am (UTC)
*pouts* But raising the dead seems like such an awesome idea in theory!
Yuuki Hikari: Toddlers in the Snowyuukihikari on September 7th, 2011 11:20 am (UTC)
I tried that once with chalk in an abandoned lot... D: ... just D:
Rainy with a Chance of Mudslides...randomdiversion on September 7th, 2011 05:25 pm (UTC)
But I bet if any other FMA fans happened to wander by later they got a good chuckle out of it.... XD
Yuuki Hikari: Toddler!Al Loveyuukihikari on September 9th, 2011 01:57 am (UTC)
LOL... funny thing about that. Waaaay back in 2004 (which was when I did said chalk circle LOL) it was for a thing we were doing in this community to commemorate the start of the English language dub of the first series. Bunch of us from all parts of the world went out and drew the transmutation circles in lots or parks... one person's set of transmuation circles made it into their newspaper because passers by went "WTF is this!?" and then so did the newspaper LOL!

So, yeah XD good chuckles all around on those.

Rainy with a Chance of Mudslides...randomdiversion on September 9th, 2011 02:04 am (UTC)
Uh oh. Now maybe I *do* want to draw a transmutation circle on the floor.

It might be amusing to do if someone could organize the effort to make a *lot* of them appear worldwide on Oct. 3 at conspicuous spots around the globe, using a harmless medium such as sidewalk chalk. Proper diagrams would have to be distributed.

Probably freak out the paranoid thinking it's some kind of witchcraft or terrorism thing...when it's really just a sort of world-wide flash-mob. Then use twitter or something to tip off the local media to the anime reference if the circles succeed in drawing their attention.

I imagine in the US, Cartoon Network (airing FMAB) wouldn't mind the free publicity.
amethyst_konekoamethyst_koneko on September 9th, 2011 02:21 am (UTC)
:) I don't know how you'd organize something like this on a worldwide scale but it would be awesome if we could! ^_^ Cartoon Network would LOVE the publicity. They might even give us our own commercial bumper/eyecatcher during an airing of FMAB! XD
Rainy with a Chance of Mudslides...randomdiversion on September 9th, 2011 02:38 am (UTC)
It would have to be organized by someone with lots of friends throughout the fandom.

That person would have to find which fans in major cities are willing to go draw the circles (probably quickly, in the early morning before people are out and about), and identify places to do so that are conspicuous won't get anyone arrested. Locals might check with their police forces in advance to find out what rules apply about sidewalk chalk art. I imagine it might be entirely illegal in, say, Singapore--don't want anyone to get in trouble for a harmless prank.

Participants would need to buy sidewalk chalk in advance and practice in private so they could do it quickly with minimal props (eg: maybe a string to use so the outer circle stays round, and a yardstick for the straight lines).

Then they'd have to standardize on one particular alchemy circle or a set of them that actually appear in the anime or manga, and also a size or sizes to do them in, so that media can recognize that it is a coordinated effort and so that it ties directly to FMA rather than being attributed to some other source or random weirdness.

Lastly the various culprits and their friends should find out what the twitter or email contacts are for any media likely to cover the mystery, so that if the media gets it wrong then social media can tip them to the source.

Anyhow--I watched FMAB on netflix (what they have of it) about 3 weeks ago and joined here about 3 days ago, so I'm NOT the one to organize this since I don't know the fandom well enough. I'm just tossing out ideas if someone else *does* want to do it.
sparkyqueen: slappedsparkyqueen on September 10th, 2011 02:26 pm (UTC)
Do it.
Rainy with a Chance of Mudslides...randomdiversion on September 10th, 2011 04:16 pm (UTC)
Jeez, I only started watching FMAB 3 weeks ago and that's really my only exposure to FMA.

This sort of thing should be someone who knows the manga well and has a lot of (online) FMA-related friends around the world. I can suggest what might work but it has to be organized by someone with extensive fandom connections.
amethyst_konekoamethyst_koneko on September 11th, 2011 12:57 am (UTC)
It's a lovely idea but neither randomdiversion or I have the necessary connections to pull this off. Also it seems that since the fervor of the fandom is dying down, there's not a lot of interest in doing something of this scale. Sad but true. I guess at this point we'll all be celebrating in our own individual ways to offer a toast to FMA. :)
adoxerella: finaltransmutationadoxerella on September 7th, 2011 02:43 pm (UTC)
I might have to charting that knitted transmutation circle idea I had and spend the day marathoning FMA while I work on knitting it.
shindkrowshindkrow on September 7th, 2011 03:04 pm (UTC)
My friend just got into crocheting... I know what I'm asking for! XD
shindkrowshindkrow on September 7th, 2011 03:04 pm (UTC)
I was wondering this as well... thinking cake, dress up, probably a "let's finish FMAB online because Netflix is missing parts 4/5" marathon since we're running our roommate through the original after CoS and B interested her. XD But I would like to write a fic to commemorate it. I already kind of had one already written yesterday that would be fitting... hmm...
ladraoveladraove on September 9th, 2011 02:11 am (UTC)
I know I'll be doing a DVD marathon of Brotherhood while wearing my pocketwatch and FMA shirt. ^^

Something fandom could consider in the future (although this might have worked better at our heyday) would be to have fandom/cosplay meetups on the weekend around October 3, very similar to the international event known as Hetalia Day. Basically, fans gather and eat pot luck and have fun together playing games and joining together in love of FMA and Arakawa-sensei.

This might be a bit of a stretch, though, but it could catch on as a movement.
amethyst_konekoamethyst_koneko on September 11th, 2011 01:02 am (UTC)
Yeah, in our heyday we probably coulda pulled this off. Now I'm not so sure. Money's tight for everybody, we're spread out all over the place, and, just based on this post alone, I don't see a lot of interest in doing anything, esp anything of this scale. :( Oh well. Cherish the memories I suppose.
