Translation question: the elusive Mrs Miles
I have a highly important nerding question for you all. So, maryh10000 clued me into something that rocked my world today: the line where Major Miles says he's married may be maybe possibly a mistranslation!

Remember how Miles casually mentions his wife in that one panel? Thus causing all kinds of interesting stuffs for fic writers who want to tackle the Major's romantic life or inner workings because a) we know nothing about her so have to put our thinking caps on and work out what kind of lady we think she is and/or b) Miles is hot and we want to ship him with people.

Apparently, the wife he refers to is his father's.

The panel in question is on page 17 of Chapter 65, in Volume 16. I don't have the Viz volume in question, drat, but I hear they translated it as "my father's wife" rather than "my wife". Can anyone confirm this sighting?

I also do not read Japanese, frandammit, but I do have the original Japanese version of the panel in question, if any Japanese-speakers here fancy tackling it. Help a loser fangirl out! It's what Olivia would want.

Here's the scanlation from onemanga:

Here's the original Japanese (from Vol 16 rather than Shonen Gangan, all you nitpickers):

Unfortunately I'm parsing the English, my Japanese is limited to "kawaii desu ne!!!111"

I can say that and a bunch of other stuff I mostly learnt from Ed. "Ki-samaaaa!!!", "Yarou!", "Sugoi!" and, of course, "Kuso taisa!" XD

I can imagine that will all be most useful when I finally get to Japan. "No, darling, I can't ask that man where the train station is. Yes, even though I watch all that anime. But I do know the Japanese for 'human transmutation,' I could ask him about that?"

Yeah, and the sad thing is, that the 1 time I was in Japan, in the doujin store, and said "hagane no renkinjutsushi", they didn't understand me ;p

And I actually know how to ask where the train station is! "Doko eki desu ka?" Only, I have no idea what would happen if anyone would actually respond ;p i would probably explode. The best thing to do ime, is to smile and bow a lot and point at things XD

Oh noes! But I'm very jealous that you've actually made it to Japan. One day ...

I would hope they would respond by smiling and pointing? That would help. XD

I really loved Japan, it was everything I hoped it would be: beautiful, quirky, a paradise for fangirls ;p I'm definitely going back again.

I want to go so much! Until then, I shall have to make do with anime and katsudon from the local Japanese delivery place. Nom nom nom.
