Translation question: the elusive Mrs Miles
I have a highly important nerding question for you all. So, maryh10000 clued me into something that rocked my world today: the line where Major Miles says he's married may be maybe possibly a mistranslation!

Remember how Miles casually mentions his wife in that one panel? Thus causing all kinds of interesting stuffs for fic writers who want to tackle the Major's romantic life or inner workings because a) we know nothing about her so have to put our thinking caps on and work out what kind of lady we think she is and/or b) Miles is hot and we want to ship him with people.

Apparently, the wife he refers to is his father's.

The panel in question is on page 17 of Chapter 65, in Volume 16. I don't have the Viz volume in question, drat, but I hear they translated it as "my father's wife" rather than "my wife". Can anyone confirm this sighting?

I also do not read Japanese, frandammit, but I do have the original Japanese version of the panel in question, if any Japanese-speakers here fancy tackling it. Help a loser fangirl out! It's what Olivia would want.

Here's the scanlation from onemanga:

Here's the original Japanese (from Vol 16 rather than Shonen Gangan, all you nitpickers):

yeah, translation errors are common in scanlations and the stuff you pay for too. Apparently this is as much art as science really

hahaha I can buy Drachman or anything really but apparently those Ishbalan genes are strong ones

Translation is definitely a real art! It's damn difficult too, balancing accuracy with capturing the feel of the original with sounding like natural English. Literal translations can be very stilted and odd-sounding.

Apparently so!

yes exactly which is why I've gotten into arguments with some fans who think the official translations are shit and scanlations are the only ones that are right and that isn't true

Seems to be a bit of both to me. I've seen some real humdinger errors in both official and non-official translations. Let us all learn Japanese?

oh how wish. I've proven awful at learning any language, English included some days
