Translation question: the elusive Mrs Miles
I have a highly important nerding question for you all. So, maryh10000 clued me into something that rocked my world today: the line where Major Miles says he's married may be maybe possibly a mistranslation!

Remember how Miles casually mentions his wife in that one panel? Thus causing all kinds of interesting stuffs for fic writers who want to tackle the Major's romantic life or inner workings because a) we know nothing about her so have to put our thinking caps on and work out what kind of lady we think she is and/or b) Miles is hot and we want to ship him with people.

Apparently, the wife he refers to is his father's.

The panel in question is on page 17 of Chapter 65, in Volume 16. I don't have the Viz volume in question, drat, but I hear they translated it as "my father's wife" rather than "my wife". Can anyone confirm this sighting?

I also do not read Japanese, frandammit, but I do have the original Japanese version of the panel in question, if any Japanese-speakers here fancy tackling it. Help a loser fangirl out! It's what Olivia would want.

Here's the scanlation from onemanga:

Here's the original Japanese (from Vol 16 rather than Shonen Gangan, all you nitpickers):

Ooh, thanks! So what he says is literally "grandfather, father ... and incidentally, wife"? That does sound more like the wife is his. In the online scanlation, that ellipsis and "incidentally" seems to separate the wife from the other list of relatives. This makes sense, because he's talking about blood relatives and his mixed ancestry, so the ethnicity of his wife is a tangent from that.

The ellipsis place is the same in that raw and in the scanlation.

「祖母・父 。。。 ついでに妻も」
"grandmother, father... and incidentally my wife"

I haven't seen the Viz volume (I've only bought FMA in my own language and read scanlations) so I can't comment on their TL, but if it was "my father's wife" then the translator (or editor) probably dropped the ball on that. Happens. XD

Ah, I saw the ellipsis in Japanese, but it was the only part of the sentence I understood! :D I know Viz aren't perfect. For instance, they translated Xerxes as "Cselksess" - which is perhaps a decent rendering of the katakana, only Xerxes, like most of the names in FMA, is an allusion: King Xerxes is a legendary Persian king (he's in the Bible's Old Testament as well as elsewhere) - his wife was called Queen Amestris. So you'd think if you could spell Amestris right you could spell Xerxes?

So you'd think if you could spell Amestris right you could spell Xerxes?

But that would be too easy! (∩゚д゚)

Haha, wouldn't it just? Now, if we could only just all agree on how the hell you spell Resembool/Rizenbull/Rizenburg/that place with the sheep ...

I think "That Place With The Sheep" should be the new official name.
