Translation question: the elusive Mrs Miles
I have a highly important nerding question for you all. So, maryh10000 clued me into something that rocked my world today: the line where Major Miles says he's married may be maybe possibly a mistranslation!

*_*

Remember how Miles casually mentions his wife in that one panel? Thus causing all kinds of interesting stuffs for fic writers who want to tackle the Major's romantic life or inner workings because a) we know nothing about her so have to put our thinking caps on and work out what kind of lady we think she is and/or b) Miles is hot and we want to ship him with people.

Apparently, the wife he refers to is his father's.

The panel in question is on page 17 of Chapter 65, in Volume 16. I don't have the Viz volume in question, drat, but I hear they translated it as "my father's wife" rather than "my wife". Can anyone confirm this sighting?

I also do not read Japanese, frandammit, but I do have the original Japanese version of the panel in question, if any Japanese-speakers here fancy tackling it. Help a loser fangirl out! It's what Olivia would want.

Here's the scanlation from onemanga:

Here's the original Japanese (from Vol 16 rather than Shonen Gangan, all you nitpickers):

The way I see it, both translations can be taken as correct, to a certain value of "correct". He says "wife", but he doesn't specify whose wife he's talking about. If I were translating this, I would go with the "my wife" option. Why would he say "my father's wife" instead of "my mother", unless his father was remarried and he had a stepmother? Translating it as "my father's wife" doesn't make sense to me.
bob_fishbob_fish on January 30th, 2011 04:54 pm (UTC)
Ooh, thanks! So what he says is literally "grandfather, father ... and incidentally, wife"? That does sound more like the wife is his. In the online scanlation, that ellipsis and "incidentally" seems to separate the wife from the other list of relatives. This makes sense, because he's talking about blood relatives and his mixed ancestry, so the ethnicity of his wife is a tangent from that.

I think he means his own wife, from a native speaker's pov.
bob_fishbob_fish on January 30th, 2011 05:00 pm (UTC)
Ah, okay, thank you! So I take it we're not missing any super-obscure Japanese convention of referring to your mother as "father's wife", then?

In the official Finnish translation (which, at least in this case, isn't nearly as wordy as the scanlation xD) he says "vaimoni" which most definitely means "my wife".

More's the pity, I'd love to ship him with other people but I have a major infidelity squick.
bob_fishbob_fish on January 30th, 2011 05:13 pm (UTC)
Thanks! Here are some solutions:

1) Have him divorced or the wife dead in a tragic skiing accident before he meets the person you'd like to ship him with. This is the one I was guilty of. Bye bye, unnamed and probably perfectly nice wife!
2) If you're shipping him with a girl, there is always the "married in secret" route. I've seen some Olivia/Miles fic that carries this one off.

can't read the Japanese sadly but Viz does have it as his mom (makin him one helluva mutt)

eta - I do see that others think the Scanlators had it right

Thanks for the confirmation of the Viz version! Looks like Viz got it wrong this time, meaning all our fics that deal with the fact he's married (I remember you had him secretly married to Olivia!) have not been jossed after all.

Olivia says to him in that flashback as the product of "several races", so I've always liked the idea that he's got more of a mix in him than Ishbalan and Amestrian. I gave him a Drachman grandmother in Wrong Turn 'verse, and I always mean to have him complain that no-one gives him shit for being part Drachman, they're too busy giving him shit for being a quarter Ishbalan. Good old Miles, whatever the excuse for anyone giving him shit, they will be regretting it 0.5 seconds after they've said it. XD

In the French version, Miles does say "my wife". So everyone agrees on that, but Viz?
bob_fishbob_fish on January 30th, 2011 05:57 pm (UTC)
Apparently so!

Darn I wonder how I missed that line that he might be married. Well Maybe Arakawa will clear this up or give us some hints in the upcoming FMA Chronicles book. :)

FMA Chronicles??? Why haven't I heard of this? What is it, another Perfect Guidebook? Surely not more manga?

Hello unknown guestbrinylon on January 30th, 2011 07:16 pm (UTC)
If I parse this, Miles is Ishbalan through his mother, whose father was Ishbalan. I agree that brining in a step mother would be very strange. Now I wonder if his wife is Amestrian or yet another race... The way this is formulated, which may very well be a translation thing, is that everybody is of a different race, not just different from Ishbalan, and very likely plain ol' Amestrian.
bob_fishbob_fish on January 30th, 2011 07:23 pm (UTC)
Ooh, out of interest, are you parsing the English or the Japanese? I like the idea that Miles is the product of more than two different cultures! He's a complex guy and it's intriguing how little we know about him.

seems closer to "my wife" than anything else. there's a tiiiiny bit of vagueness but it'd be a weird way to say "my mom" as "and my father's wife"
although he is talking about his own genetics!

then again he adds on the wife comment as incidental, so yeah, gonna go with "my wife"

then again again, viz has done its share of weird translations in the past.
bob_fishbob_fish on January 30th, 2011 07:28 pm (UTC)
"My wife" is the consensus of how the Japanese should translation! Looks like he's taken after all, people.

Btw, look at kirarakim's comment above - there's going to be a new Perfect Guide-style book, FMA Chronicles, published this year, with lots of new info and "deleted scenes" from the manga. Oooooooh.

In italian version this panel says:
"Mio nonno, mia nonna e mia moglie sono di etnia differente", means "My grandfather, my grandmother and my wife are of different ethnicity"
bob_fishbob_fish on January 30th, 2011 08:15 pm (UTC)
If you look upthread at what the Japanese speakers are saying, it seems the Italian translators got it wrong in a different way, translating "father" as "grandfather". His grandfather was Ishbalan for sure, too, because he mentions later in the conversation that grandfather was killed in the Ishbal massacre. Still, it sounds good in Italian. XD

Thank you for sharing this with us!! I take it from the comments the consensus is "my wife" ?

Thanks for bringing this up! I was looking for a raw of this panel and, yes, Miles really is married. I used to be averse to pairing him with anyone, but after reading a crack theory that Miles is secretly married to Olivier, I started shipping him with her.

I asked my friend who is fluent in Japanese and yes, he does says "my wife". The Indonesian version in this panel says "istriku" which means "my wife"... So it's confirmed? Now I'm really really curious what kind of woman his wife is.
