Countries in FMA in relation to our own
For FMA Big Bang it is really vital for me to know for sure. You see, I know Xing is like China, Amestris is like England or Germany, and that Drachma is like Russia. My biggest concern is Creta and Areugo. What countries, if any, are they similar to? I've tried to find the information myself for weeks, and nothing has come up. Any help would be most appreciated!

From the sounds of their names, I was always under the impression they were Italy and Greece respectively.

We don't really know that much about the countries bordering Amestris...

No, we don't. I wanted the info because there are two OCs I need to name and they are from those countries, so I wanted to make sure they had names that made sense. I sorta always thought that Areugo was like France maybe, but I wanted to make sure..

from what I heard, Aerugo is supposed to be similar to Greece and Creta maybe Spain? I'm not sure. and sadly I can't give you the source, because I don't remember^^;

How funny, I always sorta thought Areugo was like France for some reason. :P

Re. what other posters have said about Aerugo=Greece and Creta=Italy - I always thought it was the other way around? Creta sounds a lot like Crete (the Greek island) - and is in fact Latin for Crete - which made me guess it's a Greece analogue to some degree? If you make Creta very Greek, it's worth remembering that ancient Xerxes has some architectural and cultural resemblance to Ancient Greece (and it also pulls heavily from medieval Persia). So, for instance, the Icarus myth Ed quotes in Chapter 1 could easily in FMA-land come from ancient Xerxes rather than Creta (and wouldn't it be appropriate, given what happened to the Xerxeans?).

Aerugo is a real word meaning "copper rust" - nothing to do with nations, really. The 'o' ending sounds vaguely Italian or Spanish. We have slightly more info on it than we do on Creta, partly because Aerugo and Amestris have an ongoing border dispute. It's a warm country (south of Amestris, and the south of Amestris is hot) and borders the sea on the south. Which sounds rather Mediterranean to me. There's a bit more on Aerugo in the (non-canon) game "Prince of the Dawn", and we meet some Aerugan characters, whose names also seem to suggest Aerugo is a bit Italianate.

So you'll see from this that there's actually relatively little canon info, which gives you a lot of artistic freedom! I tend to write Amestris as a mixture of Britain, Germany and occasionally France, Aerugo as a hotchpotch of Italy, Spain and Southern France (but more Italy than anything), and Creta as a mixture of Greece and Turkey.

While we know much more about Xing, there's scope to slip little bits of other cultures in there, especially because like China we know it's a huge and culturally/ethnically diverse country. I've seen bits of Singaporean, Japanese and Korean culture thrown in the mix.

As for Drachma, it's suggested to be pretty Russian. But I'm sure there's scope for slipping in elements from other countries in that part of the world if you felt inclined.

I personally really enjoy that kind of world-building, and I think it's a lot richer and more interesting if you give yourself the freedom to mix it up a little, as Arakawa does herself.

Wow, that really helped a lot! And this is my first really big attempt at world building, so I've been doing a lot of research into clothing styles and so on of the countries during that time period, and so this is really good information. Thanks!

I second all of this, though my Amestris has more than a little America thrown in--I can't help it, my default comparison for English-speaking fantasy places is the one I know best.

Mixing it up is TOTALLY fun. :)
I think Creta is "like Greece"... that's how I write it. Aerugo... like Aragón... Catherine of Aragón... so Spain. :) Aragón's chief rival "way back" was Castilla. :)

Copy Pasta from here... sorry, I got the Google-fu going and didn't want to stop. Spanish minor... "Spain Spanish" geek.

http://www.whatspain.com/aragon.html

The largest of the three regions, Aragón, has long been one of Spain's most important regions. The region has played one of the starring roles in Spain's lengthy history, as Aragón was Castilla's rival kingdom back in medieval times. When Fernando of Aragón wed Isabel de Portugal in one of the most world-changing political dealings in history, voila! The kingdoms united to form one Spain and the rest is history, so to speak.

That would make a lot of sense. :P

Aerugo is actually Italy, depending on how canon you consider the various video games. No word on Creta, though-you can probably just make shit up as far as that one's concerned.
soraina_skyesoraina_skye on January 23rd, 2011 07:55 pm (UTC)
Huh, that wasn't there when I looked at the FMA wiki before. And admittedly I always sorta thought Aerugo was like France.

That's what mfelizandy and I are doing with Aerugo in our Big Bang. We've had a story on the drawing board for awhile, and decided to write it for the BBC. And way back when we first started discussing it, we just sort of placed Aerugo somewhere near North Africa... kinda... sorta. XD

Amestris is quite a bit bigger than it is in manga/Brotherhood canon, as well -- Mainly because we extrapolated from distances mentioned in the 1st anime. Specifically, travel times from point A to point B (mentioned in "Destruction's Right Hand" -- I think), and an approximation of how fast a train would travel, how many stops it might make, etc.

Regardless of the game that we heard about recently, we chose to keep it the way we'd had it, originally.

Okay, so the geography isn't right... but what's the point in having an "Artistic License", if we don't use it once in awhile? XD

I always assumed Creta was the Greece one and I envisioned Aerugo as more Eastern Europe as opposed to Amestris as Western Europe.

(This was mainly so I could justify putting FMA-verse Romani there, but still...)

Late vote, and again echoes what has been said already:

There's no canon information on either country really. I usually consider Creta to be some sort of Greece/Albania and Aerguo to be a sort of Southern France/Spain/Italy. Xing I tend to treat as Chinese/Korean/Vietnamese/Singaporean, etc. It is so HUGE when you see the maps, and there are so many clans (each presumably with their own traditions), that I can see a lot of diversity within the empire.
