FMA Music: "The Soul Within The Steel"--a loving tribute to Alphonse
FMA Music: "The Soul Within The Steel"
Original Lyrics by binaryalchemist with Teri Wachowiak
(to the tune of "After The Gold Rush" by Neil Young)
SPOILERS: Chapter 107/Episode 63
A lot of you have heard or read my FMA comedy music or the Mock Opera, "Revenge of the Miniskirt Army". I wanted to write a song about Alphonse....but it was harder than I ever imagined. In the end---it had to be serious. And it took me five blasted years to finish. Once I had seen the abovementioned chapter and episode, I knew it was time to complete the song. My musical partner, Teri, wrote parts of the first two verses but was not as familiar with the original melody so it is about 95% mine--so I get 95% of the blame, yes? We have done a very raw recording but once the descant harmonies are arranged it will be done again and shared.

THE SOUL WITHIN THE STEEL

By The Binary Alchemist with Teri Wachowiak

(ttto “After The Gold Rush” by Neil Young)

Well I dreamed I saw my soul in armor coming to this timeless place

where I wait

With a promise made and a promise kept he had come now to this

Gate

Fingers of steel reached out for mine—I almost hesitate…

For a brother’s blood and a brother’s love

Had brought us to this fate

For a brother’s blood and a brother’s love

Had brought us to this fate….

Well I dreamed I heard a young boy crying-and I knew that voice  was

mine

It was a cry of joy and yet a cry of anguish

For this tragedy of time

Caught in a dream—but not a dream

No pattern would align….

Flesh and spirit torn asunder once

Must somehow intertwine

Flesh and spirit torn asunder once

Must somehow intertwine

Yet I dreamed I saw the Gates of Wisdom parting

And a frail hand clasped my own

Tattered armor faded—flesh was animated

As my soul reclaimed its home

Promises kept-my debt was paid

The blood seal now undone

I shall keep my vigil faithfully till the day my brother comes

I shall keep my vigil faithfully till the day my brother comes

Through the Gate I heard my brother Edward crying

By the wreckage of my armored shell

To return me safely to the world again

He had sacrificed himself

Power was lost—but Wisdom gained

There’s a world we two must heal…..

Bearing in our hearts the wounded child and the soul within the steel

Bearing in our hearts the wounded child and the soul within the steel

Those lyrics are so pretty! ♥

I'd love to hear the recording of it.

Thanks! The melody by Neil Young is so gorgeous--but because of the key change needed to match my bandmate's voice I have to completely rearrange it and write a descant harmony so we will have to work on that quite a bit.

Oh my...

I loved these, seriously they ARE AWESOME. You described Alphonse's situation so well and managed to caught his essence as well. Five years? Wow you sure persevere! Hard work pays well and this is a clear example.

For a brother’s blood and a brother’s love

Had brought us to this fate <---YES! beautiful

Wow...thank you so much! Roy's song--"Tinderbox of War" took a full year and I still haven't recorded it yet. I love Al so much....I might be able to write fun, silly stuff about everybody else...but not my dear Alphonse!

You don't joke with THE ALPHONSE...you just not.

Well...one night after a few beers I improvised a silly blues song of Ed singing about "my brother's stuck in the can..."
And then there was "Sorry Doesn't Cut It (Not At AllI" in which Al give Ed hell for talking him into the transmutation:"We should have been playing "Harry Potter"/Instead of 'Magicians Of The Golden Dawn" (the book on Hoho's desk in the opening of the original series)

There is another Al song--a CoS song called "The Green Hills of Resembool" set to the High King's "Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore" about Al and Edward on a ship entering New York Harbor for the first time--a mixture of joy, excitement, terror, and homesickness--and only way he can bear this is that Edward is by his side every step of the way. Problem is the original words are damn near so perfect I could change only a handful of words and it would be Al's song--not about a lover but of a beloved homeland he's forsaken for the love of his brother
