Rebecca Catalina arrives home one Friday evening to find her roommate, aspiring politician Katie Flowers, dying of gunshot wounds in the bathtub. Riza finds a banned alchemy book among Katie's possessions, dealing with the lost Xerxean art of takwin. When a retired State Alchemist with a lot of blood on his hands, Henry Katzenklavier, comes sniffing after Katie's book, Mustang and his team suspect political motivations behind Katie's murder. Are Hakuro's old guardists mixed up with taboo alchemy? And was Katie killed for investigating them? Meanwhile, threats to the team escalate: Riza is injured in the shoulder after an assassination attempt. Havoc discovers that the assassination attempts, and Katie's murder, are the work of the Luttenberger gang, apparently hired to protect Katzenklavier secrets. Ed discovers that Al has been secretly planning to join up as a State Alchemist just as Ed is about to resign his commission. And Al discovers the purpose of takwin: the creation of a Homunculus. Miles, Rebecca and their teams raid the Luttenberger gang's strip club headquarters. Rebecca manages to confirm the identity of Katie's murderer, and takes him down in a firefight. The gang are neutralised, their leaders dead or in custody - and now Team Mustang have discovered Katzenklavier's base of operations. Mustang, Ed, Al and Riza prepare to raid.
