Ling - US VA - Opinions?
Ling_1.jpg image by sarinah81

Hmmm...

Well, Todd Haberkorn has had his first appearance in the English dub of the show and I'm wondering what people thought of how he portrayed Ling Yao?

Myself, I'm guessing I'll get used to him, but his Ling sounds more like a Yoki-type character than the Ling I've come to know and love; obsequious, giggly, not my manly Xingian prince...

I know many of you are familiar with Todd's work. What do you think of his portrayal of Ling?

Wondering this myself. But doesn't someone over at Bones who.. well from what I heard someone/s involved over in Japan picks who they think will do the best job of portraying their characters in English?

Yeah, I want to (want to!) trust that they know what they're doing.

I like the idea that the original creators/casting people have a hand, or at least, suggestions on who will work when it's dubbed into English.

We'll see, huh?

Just glad it wasn't just me...

That's what I was thinking (hoping) also. He does sort of start out portraying *himself* one way and changes, gets more focused and, well, manly (heroic) as the dire circumstances set in.

I have to say the goofy little "I no understand your language" dance/song at the end had me giggling...

Agreed! A friend and I were watching it and completely freaked out when Ling opened his mouth and spoke! It was so horrifying that it made my skin crawl!

I understand this VA did the voice for Sgt. Frog--which I had the displeasure of sitting through the first few episodes. Apparently, this VA only knows how to do one voice...and he does it very badly.

He sounds better when he's being serious. When he's being silly he sounds like a girl. :P

I'm not familiar with his work at all, but...I'll put it this way. It's going to take some getting used to...

I've never heard him before but... it only took me two seconds to get used to his voice. I thought he did a fine job.

But it's only been one episode...

I've heard Todd play serious stuff before, and he does it fine. I wouldn't really worry about it.

I got used to his Ling right away. Now, I've been avoiding the new episodes in Japan for months just so that when the dub came out I wouldn't watch it and go "He doesn't sound right! D=" So that might be a part of it, but I think he sounds fine. His sillyness actually got me giggling throughout the episode, which did not happen in the sub. XD

I was more concerned if they were gonna pronounce the "g" in Ling. I'm so relieved they did.

This I've got to hear! I've heard some of his other work and enjoyed it, but I still think that the guy who does Scar would have been the perfect Ling. *sighs* Looks like there's gonna be a youtube trip in my future. ^^; (lol no cable for meeeee ;_;)

I've never heard Todd before, but Ling, to me, sounded like he was trying to sound like Jon Lovitz.

Of course, I'm still fighting to get used to Maxie because I still don't think she's quite got Alphonse down. I know why Aaron's not doing it, but Maxie just still keeps that female quality I can hear in her voice. Not sure what others think of that. But Ling might take some getting used to for me.

Yes! I heard Jon Lovitz, too! (Which was not a good association to make...)

On the other hand, I've been rather pleased with Maxie. She sounds *so* much like Aaron that most times I have to remind myself that it's not him. Occassionally, there is, as you say, a female quality, or perhaps, the lack of a male (or young boy) quality, but other than that, I'm very pleased she sounds so very much like Aaron.

Ling, on the other hand, will take some getting used to. I am hoping, as others have said, that his more serious voice is less, well, silly.

I have to assume I'm biased because I'm completely current on all Jpn. releases of everything, and, because of that, I already know who Ling is at his core, and, how badass he really is (even before he's Greedling, he was no slouch during the fight leading up to Gluttony's consumption of Ling and Ed both). Thus the expectation of an equally commanding voice.

When Ling was first introduced in the manga, I couldn't stand him. He was annoying! (I guess my reaction was similar to Ed's.)

In this episode we really only have a few moments where Ling, Ran Fan and Fuu are sitting rooftop and the servants are counseling the master on how he is demeaning himself. When Ling gives that response--that a little inconvenience is worth the payoff--the voice hints at something more. That could be good, if the intonation evolves and becomes something more robust and commanding.

But yes, the silly voice he portrayed in most of the episode? I don't care for it. Then again, I think that's the point. Much of the storytelling is Ed-centric, and here, through Ed coloured-glasses, Ling is still intolerably annoying.

Todd Haberkorn is no Mamoru Miyano, but I still loved it.

Then again, I am quite familiar with Todd's work, so I can pretty much say I'm biased about him. Ne.

I wasn't a big fan of it but I might just have to get used to it. I did love Ran Fan's voice though.

I liked it a lot. I think they were trying to differentiate between the XIngese and Amestris peeps, especially with Ling, just to sorta show an 'accent' in a way. His acting was good, when he needed to be serious, I reaaaaally liked it, but yeah, it's a nice play on his pretty high voice of the Japanese anyway.

I haven't seen the most recent one with Ling (yet) - though I probably will later this morning.

Ling's one of my favourite characters, so I've been looking forward to seeing how he turns out~

I'm liking him so far. Still hoping Maxey is gonna grow with Al, though, she was great in the Rush Valley ep and had some good moments last ep but Al still sounds like a nine-year-old girl a lot of the time. She wasn't even this girly with Crona!

And I gotta be honest, I think Todd is gonna rock it when he's got dramatic scenes. Anybody who's seen the dub of xxxHolic can back me on this, he can handle both serious and whackysilly. (I think Watanuki is probably the most RANDOM SPIKES OF BRAIN ACTIVITY! character he plays, though he takes most of the weirdos)
