Something Else I noticed about 107

Anyone else notice parallels to this:

Might give a little more weight to Alphonse's heroic sacrifice.

I did; I love the way Arakawa uses 'echo' tropes in this manga.

Also, I have always liked how Al thinks that sacrificing yourself by dying isn't the way to go. I think he's still staying true to that - he could know that unless he exhanged his soul for Ed's arm, they would have both died.

Which is why I'm hoping Ed won't consider a repeat of the first anime as a way to get Al back. I mean, I don't THINK Arakawa will do it, but you can never be 100% sure...

I don't think we're getting an exact repeat at least - this wasn't an exact repeat either (it involved neither Philosopher's Stones nor dead Elrics).

I completely agree with this. I think Al did what he thought was the only way to save everyone including himself and Ed. And as he said Ed would come back for him. He was not giving up on his life he was just putting his complete faith in Ed.

I also think that the logic is sound... that Al's body and soul would have needed to be integrated inside the Gate, and not in the "real world". Somehow, it looks to me like it'll be easier for Ed to pull ALL of Al out now.

jskajljksaaklj wow. I don't think Ed would give himself up for Al's body. That would be a bit too predictable and.. they agreed they wouldn't do that. It's just this time there was NO choice because they would have been dead otherwise like sallykie said.

A theory that's been floating around that I'm really hoping for is Hoho hasn't been able to be around for his boys, what better way to make up lost time than to give up his philosophers stone existence to bring Al back from the gate...

And yes, I do love her use of parallels, it's an impressive story telling device
Pamfledglingoflove on May 11th, 2010 09:04 pm (UTC)
I agree, I think all things point to Hoho sacrificing himself to bring Al back, for the following reasons:

1) Hoho's kind of close to dead anyway, much like Al was. While I do think it's possible he could heal and get better, I don't think he will choose to, for the next two reasons:
2) Once Father is dead, Hoho has completed his mission. He's been alive way longer than anyone else, and more than anything, he wants to return to his beloved Trisha's side.
3) I would imagine that the souls inside Hoho would also like eternal rest, rather than being stuck inside his body, suffering, for eternity.

Yeah, those are pretty much the reasons I'm basing my hope on. Also, -though, I've always had the personal an inexplicable dislike for Hoho- because of this series' drama it certainly can't have a perfectly happy ending and Hoho fits perfectly into the niche of characters that people like enough for there to be an emotional impact if he dies but not ruin the whole purpose of the story's main character, which, if Al doesn't make it through, Ed's whole purpose in this battle becomes a rather moot point.

Of course, you never know, formula doesn't always work and maybe I'm grasping a bit at my broken heart strings because I don't want Al to be gone >.> but there are also reasonable points that could lead anyone to believe the Hoho theory. :3

What I noticed is that at that point on page 49, Al'd "die" regardless because his armour is already breaking apart (see how there is a lighting bolt thingie by his blood seal?), and Al actually said "時間が..." (Time is... [running out]), so he knows that he won't be around for too long. The last and only thing he could do at that point *is* to transmute Ed's arm since he's gonna be pulled into the gate anyway... so hey, might as well. XD (damn, I'm making Al sound less epic than he's supposed to be! D: )

(No, you're making him sound sensible and smart!)

Oh, I noticed that when I was watching an AMV that used that scene from Brotherhood! I was sitting there going, "Damn, that looks familiar".
