Chapter 104 Thoughts and Theories

I have a few theories- perhaps its just blind hope but I have to believe that Winry (and others of course) will be okay. *possibly in denial*

1. When Truth is released after Father's death, the life will flow back into things. Destroying father and the homunculi, as well as freeing Truth seems like it would be in big need of some payback, you know?

2. This is more of a minor theory, and I'm going to do a fic about it. But what if the souls inside of Father- the new Amestiran souls- started rebelling against him? He's got a hell of a lot more people in him this time around, and its possible that if their souls are still there, the souls of people like Winry or Pinako, seeing Ed and Al in danger, will react. I know its a slim possibility, but its a cool idea I think. :)

3. Mei and Xingese alchemy- she'll strut her stuff somehow.

On a side note- anyone wonder where RanFan was? And my hopes of Wrath caring about his wife seem to have been dashed. :( I guess that's what fanfiction is for. 'Course... Wrath may not know where his wife is (slim chance again, I know) and because he doesn't know Roy's gang kidnapped her, he thinks she's at the center of the circle and so she won't be harmed (at their house or something) because it seems like the center goes beyond just that bit underground- after all, Scar and Riza and everyone don't seem to be collapsing.

On another note- if Ed and everyone were sacrifices, why aren't they dead? What if they sacrificed something else- like their knowledge of the gate, maybe? And how are they to defeat Father now that he's all-powerful?

Ha, I used to have this theory that the nationwide transmutation circle and the sacrifices were for two completely different things. And, because Hohenheim nailed Father about wanting a family, I had this slightly crazy thought that he would make himself a wife (sorta like Dante from the old series only in my head he made her look like Trisha somehow, just because that would kill Hoho).

What are all your thoughts?

I posted an extended rant in my journal a couple days ago and mentioned (or fumed over) the sacrifice thing. Someone left a comment stating that the word sacrifice in Japanese basically means "human pillar" and not necessarily something or someone that must be killed in order to obtain something.

Yeah, I saw "human vessel" as a translation once, which seems to sum it up perfectly.

And, because Hohenheim nailed Father about wanting a family, I had this slightly crazy thought that he would make himself a wife...

And somehow I managed to add the words "out of Papa Hoho" onto the end of that sentence and experienced a lurch where I thought I'd been dropped into an alternate universe where fanfic could become reality. Then realized I have a crazy brain and laughed my ass off at the image of Papa Hoho being a wife to Father.

I think that the rentanjutsu transmutation circle is going to have something to do with what happens, but I don't know in what capacity. There were also the Ishbalans running around the city before the eclipse, and I bet whatever they were doing is a part of the plan.

Arakawa is really good doing exactly not what I expect her to, so I figure that if it anything I can think of, it's not going to happen.

I never thought of the wife thing, but I DO think Father is about to turn to the sacrifices and pull a "let's be friends". Remember how he said he'd turned Hohenheim into the Stone out of gratitude way back in Xerxes? I think he's going to offer everyone their limbs etc. back in exchange for being his new best buddies. Then they all go hang out on a beach in the south of France together and braid each others' hair. Al needs to work on his tan. Oh no, wait. Family barbecue time! Warm fuzzies! Izumi, you bring the steaks and Roy will light the grill. Sorry about that husband thing, but at least you have your baby brother!

Also? Your icon is way, way too close to what actually just happened.

In chapter 2, Ed tells Rose that people can only help themselves by their own means, and not to follow and support a higher power that ends up being phony anyway. Father Cornello wanted an army of religious fanatics and the Elrics knocked him off his throne - because he was trying to use a power that not only didn't belong to him, but turned out to be just a cheap imitation of what he thought he had.

Now, just over 100 chapters later, Leto is still poking out of a building to say hi (lol) and it's time to RESCUE THE TRUTH! Which is absolutely a phony higher power that just wants to mess with and use them. And they gotta de-throne Father, who just ate GOD THE TRUTH LIFE EVERYTHING NOTHING YOU ALL ONE etc etc. I can't help thinking they've completed the cycle here.

I agree with you on the full circle thing - Just as Ed compared himself to Icarus way back in the first chapter, I think Father is the Icarus now - and his distant (and fake!Godlike) disregard for humans is what is going to end up destroying him.

I'm 99.9% confident that everyone is going to be fine again. I know that any theory I try to come up with will invariably be wrong, however, and you all think up such eloquent theories that I'm not even going to bother. GOOD JOB EVEERYONE.

2. That was actually the first thing that entered my mind. Dunno if it would actually happen, but would be wicked awesome.

And my hopes of Wrath caring about his wife seem to have been dashed. :(

In the same boat with you on that one. :(

Selim, too. And he really seemed like he might. I don't think they expected her to survive under any circumstances, the black blob only took up that courtyard in Headquarters. I don't think it would've reached the fuhrer's residence.

I just thought of something. Scar in the beginning was supposedly carrying out "God's justice/vengeance," right? And now, he seemed to have some plan to counteract the circle by recreating what he had once sought to destroy. I think that's the key right there.

I agree with you. I think that the fact that the first thing we saw in this chapter was the panel with Scar’s arms, followed by Wrath being exasperated by humankind’s "pathetic struggles," followed by the panel with the five sacrifices was important. I had forgotten about what the Ishbalans were doing, but your idea makes a lot of sense.

Hoenheim's gonna pull some crazy shit to return everything to normal; and that's gonna cause destruction both Father and himself. That's the most logical theory I can come up with. xD

throwing out some responses
1.) I'll have to go with your husband there. The FMA manga is about overcoming obstacles. This is just another obstacle, and they will overcome. (95% sure, at least. 5% reserved for the possibility of a shitty, crack ending.)

I personally would love for the ending to be dark as well, but given the nature of the manga, I don't think it's going to happen.

2.) Agree with you here!

3.) For the same reason as 1.), I honestly don't think Mustang's going to end up falling in the moral sense, at least. He overcame, he's overcoming, and he will overcome. Again, I'd love for this to happen, but chances are slim.

5.) I think I'm in the minority thinking that this is a remarkably cheesy and unsatisfying ending. It's like the Power of Friendship except it's the Power of the People, and it's just . . . ugh. But different strokes for different people, yeah? *g*

6.) Al conking out when Ed gets hurt is because Al's bloodseal is linked directly to Ed. I don't believe there's any sort of alchemical connection between Hohenheim and Father, but hey! - crack is falling from the sky, so anything goes! (And I do like this idea.)

7.) I would love this type of ending. However, in a previous chapter, Ed explicitly denounces self-sacrifice as selfish. I do think that was Arakawa using Ed as a mouthpiece (I mean, dude, all Ed's been doing so far is self-sacrificing the entire damn time, so what's up?), and because of this, I don't think there's going to be too much self-sacrifice involved in the ending.

But I like where your mind's heading on this! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

this will be my first time posting to the community but i gotta rant about this chapter!! lol

i love reading others theories so many of the things i would have said have been said. i never thought about the bradley still caring about his wife thing tho.

anyway, i'm convinced scar is done for, maybe izumi, and papa hoho. and as for all the people who died, thats the entire freaking cast!! i mean there's no way. i'd be HIGHLY upset if there is no kind of twisted loop hole. especially since i'm leading towards some Ed/Winry, Roy/Riza lovin at the end of all this insanity!!

oh, and i'm gonna go check out and see if Roy looks like he's got his sight back thanks to what Mayura said lol

I firmly believe Wrath does genuinely care for Mrs. Bradley. Considering Arakawa's masterful skill of foreshadowing, she would not have included the 'she was chosen by me' scene if she did not plan on utilizing it. Ditto with Mrs. Bradley's desperate attempts on finding any information on her missing husband and son.

Perhaps Wrath did make arrangements for her to be taken to a safe location before the Promised Day occurred; it certainly looked like she was en route to someplace when Roy et al 'kidnapped' her. It's gonna be quite a scene when he finds out about her fate.

ED and CO.: Don't you care that your wife was also invited to Father's big-ass toga party?!?!
WRATH: Hmph. Nice try kiddies. But I know she's somewhere safe.
ROY: Lol, no. See, this is what happened...

I have to wonder with other people here: how will the heroes destroy Father without compromising the souls of the Amestrian citizens residing within him? And what will he do now that he's achieved his long held goal? Modeling career?

And re: the Homunculus wants a wife, well, *points at icon* LMAO, SHE'S SO INTO YOU, FATHER.

Somewhere (possibly a different post), Hoho said he had a counter if Father activated the nationwide transmutation circle but that it would be ideal if it didn't happen at all. So I'm thinking that will come into play and possibly restore some of the souls of the people? I think this is similar to Ed and Al when they were little. If they act fast enough they should be able to restore everyone since their bodies are all still intact and not much time has passed.

I was happy that the human sacrifices didn't need to die. I mean, I knew they couldn't anyway since they are the main characters and if they died at that point in the story it would all be over instantly, but I was happy nonetheless. I thought it was interesting how each of them did in fact have a seperate gate in them and that's what Father wanted...the power from those gates to fight against each other so he could utilize it. I assume this is why he made the gate in gluttony. To see if he could just make fake ones. But when that didn't work he knew he needed people/alchemist who had opened the gate.

As for how to kill Father.... I have no idea how that's going to come about. I like the theory of Hoho and Father being connected through blood since Hoho (slave 23) did give him a drop of his blood. Not sure how that would work out though since Hoho gave him the blood and there didn't seem to be much change in the little fuzzball till the actual event at Xerxes. Hmmmm so much to think about! Maybe I should go reread the chapter to find more clues:)
Toby: Kermitt3h_toby_chan on February 10th, 2010 08:57 pm (UTC)
If Al's body rejects him, perhaps Al can commandeer sexy!Father's body, since they are related by blood and possibly can overcome the rejection?

I haven't really come up with a good theory for this chapter (hardcore denial) but I was thinking that maybe, since GOD now resides in Father, and God can do anything, if he is released from Father he could return the souls to the bodies (which, honestly, I think they're all dead). Perhaps it could also incorporate equivalent exchange - if God is freed from Father's container, he may have to pay a price...?
