Hm..
"Your return may bring nothing but despair and ruin, Alphonse."

I've been wondering, what did Alphonse's body meant by what he said after Alphonse left to go back with the others? And was it really Alphonse's body, or The Truth talking? I've been curious about this for a long time now.

Could this mean Alphonse made a BIG mistake regardless of his body's condition? Or for example, when he does come back, there will be even a bigger price to pay? Perhaps his body will practically wear out, leaving Alphonse with nothing in the end.

I want to know your opinions.

My guess, it was Al's body talking and what he meant was that once he went back through the gate without his real body, he would be the fifth sacrifice and the despair and ruin will be the result of father's plan unfolding.

You've got a good point there. In that case, from that perspective, Alphonse may never get the chance to return to his body after all. That is, if Father's plan does succeed.
CWdevourer on December 16th, 2009 03:28 am (UTC)
I was reading some other theories and there does seem to be a chance for Father's plan not succeeding. For example, somewhere in chapter 90, Hoho did say that he had a counter plan ready and he has been laying random droplets of blood at places, and I believe that was just featured in the episode this past week :P

Perhaps he's creating another transmutation circle to counter Father's transmutation circle? No idea :P

Yeah. I've been skimming through previous chapters myself. I do recall Hohenheim saying that now I've thought about it, thanks~

We'll know the answer behind Hohopapa's plan before the story ends. This discussion is making me more eager to find out. LOL.

See, I got all "oh noes" when Hoho de-skinned Father and was kinda like, o. shit. ( Last panel @ http://www.onemanga.com/Full_Metal_Alchemist/97/11/ )

And then Hoho was like, o. rly. that DIDN't kill you. Ummmmm, there goes my plan. ( http://www.onemanga.com/Full_Metal_Alchemist/97/12/ ). That seems to be one scared HohoPapa in the bottom right corner there. In the next few pages, Father speaks about Hoho not being the only one to evolve, which, I took to mean that what Hohenhiem used to know about Father's composition was no longer true, and therefore, Hoho no longer had a way to kick his butt.

Soooooo . . . yeah. While I personally think the only two of the sacrifices to kick it will be Hoho and Izumi, I haven't the foggiest as to how they'll get themselves out of there and, well, not have Amestris turned into a Xexeres.

That's how I read it! Father mentions that the last sacrifice (Al) isn't properly there yet. Then Al, unknowing, returns voluntarily.

Here's a question that bugged me - how was Al going to reunite with his body and return just like that? Shouldn't there be a passage fee for something like that, especially given that the body was taken as a passage fee in the first place? Seems strangely nice of the Truth to give him a free pass like that. I wonder if he'll later discover that if he'd taken his body without thinking there would have been a horrible price to pay (Truth: "Mind if I hang onto your lungs?")

Who knows what the Truth plans to do once Al returns to the Gate. He's a sly son of a gun after all. I fear the worst will happen because of the poor condition his body is in. Unless the Truth will restore that to normal as well.
rhelpimtiredyo on December 16th, 2009 03:23 am (UTC)
I think someone translated that sentence more correctly, and it was meant to imply that Alphonse would be going back to "despair and ruin" by being the fifth sacrifice. If and when he comes back to truly get his body back, there shouldn't be an increased toll of any sort, thankfully.

Ah yes. Personally as I said above, Alphonse made a big mistake; though it was reasonable, however if things grow horrific.. He may regret his decision.

That makes sense; he needs that armour to protect him. His anorexic body couldn't stand a chance. However, what if Al does go back to the Gate and has to make a fair deal with the Truth again? Because I doubt the Truth will allow him a second freebie.

LMAO. Ed's mental breakdown will give Father an advantage to be honest. Let's not forget about what Hohenheim's going to do later on though!

Yeah, they were pretty weird translations. Glad to know that "are you with me, Fullmetal?" was mistranslated, because the phrasing just sounded really odd.

I second that. I had to read the RAW just to comprehend the real meaning behind things. scan groups are translating one thing differently from another, which confuses me of course..

He was talking about the sacrifices. The translation used in the scanlation is a bit unclear, but someone else translated it more literally and clarified that Al's body/Truth definitely referred to Al being the fifth sacrifice that the Homunculus needs.

I'm fairly certain that's the truth. And NO. AL MUST GET HIS BODY BACK.

The way Al's body sits in front of the Gate reminds me of the Truth. /shrugs

And I agree. Let's see what happens first.

On an aside, I personally can't wait to see this play out in Brotherhood. I mean, think about the last time we saw Al's body--it was when Ed was 'just passin' thru' while exiting gate!gluttony, and Ed's fierce reaction (which I think was really well animated, his struggle and fight to get back to Al's body, as if he could drag it out with him) and how completely opposite Al's entire reaction was to Ed's. Those boys foil each other so well, which amuses me to no end. Yes, it's only one of many times their actions are cardinal opposites, but, it's. Al's. BODY.
rhelpimtiredyo on December 17th, 2009 04:15 am (UTC)
Also, at the bottom of the following page you can see the Truth taking Al's body, which I think semi-confirms that Al was talking to the Truth in front of his Gate.

No problem! It took me forever to realize that it was the Truth in that panel, to be honest, but I think it makes a little sense.
