FMAB figurines: disappointing
Is it me, or do the new kotobukiya/play arts kai figurines kind of suck? I just got the Roy one, which I was super excited about, and I have to say I'm really disappointed. His head doesn't even stay on (what the hell with two heads anyway...??) Obviously I wasn't expecting it to be as nice as the Medicom Roy, but it's not even as well made as the Bandai Roy. I don't know why they even bothered to make him moveable: I couldn't even get him into a decent snapping position. And the weird plastic stand looks totally lame when you set it up. SO not worth 50 bucks to get it from Japan.

What did the rest of you think (I know at least some of you liked...?) Are the Ed and Al ones better, or is the whole lot just crap? They looked so cool in the pictures...! *sigh* I hope we get something better than this by the time they come out with an entire series of Olivia. Sheesh.

Hm... maybe it's just me, but nothing compares to Medicom Roy sorta like nothing compares to the first anime- parallel much??. And yeah, two heads is weird.

I think I'll save my money and sniff out a Medicom Ed, if I can ever find one. For less than a bajillion dollars.
priestess_grrrl: roy blue flamepriestess_grrrl on November 7th, 2009 05:44 am (UTC)
Yeah, I mean, they're never going to be able to top the Medicom ones... Maybe if they did a Medicom Hughes, damnit...!

I got my Medicom Ed from ebay awhile back, and I only paid $90 or so. I know they are getting more rare, but still, if you aren't looking for NRFB, you can usually get deals on ebay. My Roy was really lonely without an Ed! And now I can make them pose all snuggly on top of my computer...!

You should get greedy on it: she's really good at sniffing out stuff. She found me my Medicom Ed and my eyepatch!Roy plushie.

Yeah, really! I mean, figurines are supposed to have defining characteristics, like attributes on statues of ancient deities. How can he be Roy without his smirk? I guess they were trying to go for vengeful!manga!Roy, but they were WAY off. It's really unfortunate, because I was looking forward to having a whole new crop of awesome figurines. They better not screw up Olivia this badly...!

I have the Ed one. yeah, not the best quality figures...the paint job overall is pretty good to me. The joints are really had to move on all the arms--especially at the shoulders. When you bend the arms at the elbows, they look a little awkward since there are 2 points of articulation. The hands barely stay on...and yeah the head(s) pretty much float in place and basically stay on only by the forces of gravity.

oh, and i can't even get him to make the clappy pose they have on the box b/c the hands dont really stay on and the bent arms look incredibly awkward and long.

priestess_grrrl: roy rain poutspriestess_grrrl on November 7th, 2009 06:47 pm (UTC)
Yeah, same thing here: the joints were so hard to move, I was afraid I'd break them. The arms make him look like a gorilla: the only halfway decent pose I could get him in where he didn't look totally awkward was to have his hands behind his back. And the hands were not the same as the prototype: it definitely showed one gloved hand snapping and one regular gloved hand, but he only came with two snapping hands, two regular ungloved hands and two ungloved fists. No gloved regular hand. Which is lame, because he looks stupid with one glove on and one glove off, but he also looks stupid with both hands snapping. *sigh*

The hands stay on okay on mine, but the head comes off constantly, which is even worse. I was thinking of maybe trying wax: like putting a little wax on the head piece and see if I can make it a better fit. I don't want to glue it per se, even though I'd never use that other head, just because it might glue on really awkwardly and then never come off or break.

Ah well: chalk it up to more money spent on plastic crap from Japan. *eyeroll* This is why I never feel bad about DLing anime. With all the money they rip me off for, Japan can kiss my ass.

Aw hell! They jacked up Roy? damn. I was really looking forward to getting my figures too but if Roy's not right then Ed and Al are probably messed up too. I bought all 3 of them. There goes $150 shot to hell. :/
priestess_grrrl: ed little sadpriestess_grrrl on November 7th, 2009 06:53 pm (UTC)
Yeah, it pretty much sucks. :P If I were you, I wouldn't even take them out of the boxes. Then you can sell them on ebay NRFB. Maybe they'll be rare after a while and sell for a whole crapload of money. Seems that way with a lot of this stuff.

Some people liked them, so it may be a matter of personal taste. I thought the Ed had really cool looking eyes, but I haven't held it in my hand, so I can't really say. It's amazing to me how they can look so cool in pictures and be so sucky IRL. It was the opposite with the Medicom: they looked pretty cool in pics, but IRL they are BEYOND AWESOME! Too bad it's not the case with these.

I wish they would come out with some decent stuff for Brotherhood. So far it seems like there's been hardly anything, and most of it crap. WTH?

Yeah, you know, I was really disappointed about that! First time we have Roy with his emo hair, and they royally screwed it up. I had visions of setting up a whole scene with Roy standing next to Hughes' grave and everything, and now I can barely get him in a pose that doesn't look awkward and stupid. Damn you, Play Arts Kai, you suck...! .\_/.

What's with his mouth? It looks like he's wearing a mask and his real mouth is underneath. Maybe it was just the picture?

Weird, though. In an icky way...

I have both the Roy and Al Play-Arts Kai figures. I also own the RAH Roy Mustang figure.

Personally, for a vinyl & PVC figure, they're really well done and I think they're fantastic. The Alphonse figure is extremely well-detailed and I really like the Roy figure. Compared to the other Play-Arts figures (I have several), the Kai ones are much better and more dynamic in being posable.

That said, part of me wishes that I had waited for the American release, since they'll be cheaper, but at the same time, I can't say that I'm disappointed with the figures because I'm happy with them.

Also, as much as I love the RAH figure, I'm glad that the figures do not have cloth clothing or really tiny parts to them.
priestess_grrrl: ed_bishie_hairpriestess_grrrl on November 7th, 2009 04:55 pm (UTC)
Well, I'm glad at least someone likes them. At least one other person on my f-list was satisfied with them, too. I guess it's a matter of opinion.

One thing I did like about the Roy figure was the way they made his uniform all rubbery, and how, as you say, it's well detailed for a vinyl figure. If you bend him backward, you can see his white shirt underneath his uniform jacket. That's really cool. I also liked how they did his emo hair - we've never had an emo hair Roy before.

Hmmm, you think they will have a subsequent American release? I was thinking about putting him back in his box and selling him on ebay once they got kind of rare, but if they have an American release, that might not happen.

I'm glad it's not just my Roy that does that. His head is really loose, it's literally balanced on there at the moment. And that plastic thing.. just what the hell is up with that stand?

The slicked back hair head looks okay, but the other looks a touch dodgy.

That said, one of the Winry figures had two heads. Shockingly awful figure though, luminous colours.
priestess_grrrl: roy rain poutspriestess_grrrl on November 7th, 2009 05:04 pm (UTC)
Yeah, it took me like 20 minutes to even get his head to stay on at all. I found if you twist the neck in a certain way, it stays on at least somewhat better. But it's really a piece of crap in that way. And yeah, the stand makes no sense at all, and when you put it on him, he looks like he's being attacked by a giant plastic robot.

I almost didn't buy him because of that weird second head. WTF were they thinking with that? Facial expressions are really hard to do in PVC... it's bad enough when they screw up his regular face, but to try to do yelling/angry face? I mean, really? That should have never made it past the prototype.

I also don't like how he's all gangly arms and legs... Not that I wanted them to try to duplicate that Armstrong!Roy that showed up in the anime, but he's not a skinny little twerp, either. I thought the old Bandai one did a fine job with making him look like a soldier but not like a body builder. And the Medicom one was fine. But this one looks like a slight breeze might knock him right over (plastic monster or no). *sigh*

Aww, man. It's a shame that these figures not only look weird, but they're also not the best quality either. And to think I was going to add them to my christmas list. And the Medicom ones are running like between 100-500 dollars. ._.;

Maybe if they made a Maes Hughes figure I would buy it, regardless of price.(fan girl moment)
priestess_grrrl: hughes_awesomepriestess_grrrl on November 7th, 2009 04:50 pm (UTC)
Dude, if they had a Hughes, I wouldn't care if his head came off! Even a crappy Hughes is better than no Hughes! The only Maes I have is this one and he's tiny.

If they made a Medicom Hughes, I would friggin rob a bank to get one! I mean, how awesome would that be if they made his little knives and everything, all detailed? WHY IS THERE NOT ENOUGH HUGHES LOVE DAMMIT!?

But yeah, don't bother putting these on your xmas list... I'd wait till some better ones come along (although, to be fair, some people did like them, so it might be a matter of opinion).

Thanks for the info! I was seriously considering buying these, but I thought the faces looked kind of odd. That, combined with what your saying about the quality, makes me think I'll wait a bit & see what else comes out. Not worth $50 a piece...
priestess_grrrl: roy rain poutspriestess_grrrl on November 7th, 2009 07:28 pm (UTC)
Yeah, even without the problem of the heads coming off and the joints being so stiff, the craftsmanship is just not that good. You are definitely better off waiting to see what they come out with next. Hopefully it will be something halfway decent.
fullmetalrosefullmetalrose on November 8th, 2009 04:48 am (UTC)
Well Al is PROBABLY the easiest to post cause he's so big ... but Ed yeah 2 heads and it is a BITCH to remove his head/arms, etc. and to pose him. I am getting Roy for Christmas from a friend so yeah I can't voice an opinion on him ... Why not, for the price of them, just make 2 dolls O_o ... would have made more sense IMO ...

I like them and all but yeah ... I haven't played with dolls in years ... I took pics but that was all and that was a challenge in itself!
