Overall I loved it (even though my live stream is crappy and I couldn't quite enjoy the battle scenes. Oh well, I'll wait for the downloadable versoin for that). I love the feel they've given to Central, and I really think it's improving. Yeah, it's still moving quickly, but this episode didn't feel rushed to me.
My only gripe would be that in the scene where Scar was about to blow up his arm, I think they made Ed just a little too wide-eyed-pathetic, what with the groveling on the ground. and why was he not covered in muddy dirt when he got up, huh? huh?

That's my one and only gripe with this episode. It really bothered me =/

Awesome quotient of Ed+Al vs Scar fight = over 9000! I liked Ed's shocked expressions...he looked suitably young and inexperienced. It's nice to be reminded that he's still a kid.

This episode was very, very pretty.

...it's 5am so I can't really contribute anything more profound than that.

I can't wait to make icons, seriously

seconded. Sat through most of the episode going "pretty... pretty...."

though at least it's only 3 for me.

... Anyone want a copy of the .asf file I recorded? It's amazing quality considering it was streamed live - no buffering at all, and good enough to read the characters for the OP/ED lyrics...

I loved this episode like whoa!

The action scenes were improved on the manga (with the falling down the stairs and the desperate attempts to escape), I loved how they made Ed and Al seem young and inexperienced (because, at this stage in the story, they are...it gives the anime room to develop them as they go from life threatening experience to life threatening experience-plus, it will play well into the promises to survive later), I loved the dramatic brothers moment, I loved, loved, LOVED the epic Riza scene of her dropping Roy and saving his arse (and the 'useless' bit! I love how they keep the humour in!), I loved Armstrong and his sparkles and him being able to dodge, despite his size, I loved Riza's shooting, I loved Hughes reappearing from nowhere, I loved Ed and Al fighting over their mutual damage, I loved Maternal!Riza...

I LOVED THIS EPISODE!!!

SCAR ASS SHOT.

The only thing I disliked about this episode was the subpar animation. Very odd facial features and stuff was drawn way too large/wide. Other than that I think this ep was the best so far.

I agree, Alphonse looked deformed plenty of times...the other as well.

I'm really, really impressed with Kugimiya-san's voice acting. There were some awesome moments before, but I couldn't really tell how good she'd become until today's episode. That scene where he's berating Ed and telling him they have to continue to live was so. much. LOVE. (Paku-san was amazing as always, of course.) What's going to bother me though is Envy's voice. It sounded exactly like Conan, wish she'd done something slightly different - now every time Envy talks I'm going to be really confused and think I'm watching the wrong anime. =X (I guess it would've helped if I associated that voice with Dilandau, since they're both evil, twisted characters, but Conan was the very first anime (that I watched in the original Japanese) that I really got into, so no go there. *sigh*

The drawing style is starting to bother me a little though - it's starting to deviate noticeably from the manga, there are times I feel it's really off. (For example, Al's chin looked too big in some shots.) I guess I'm being picky, but as awesome as this production is turning out to be - and I really like it, it's closer to the manga i.e. darker, more intense - the drawing style was much more true to Arakawa-sensei's in the first season. (Did any Nodame fans think Roy looked exactly like Chiaki in that scene where Scar blows up the sidewalk to escape and there's a lot of smoke?) That being said, Bones has amazing visuals as always, so no real beef here.

Can't WAIT to see how Winry's voiced as an adult - hope the voice is slightly lower, although judging by the child version it might even be higher than the first season. I wish it was lower though, it would lend more maturity to her - the movie version was the best, I think. And EdWin! <3 I really hope everything works out for them, both in the manga and the anime.

HOW LONG WAS SCAR STANDING THERE, SERIOUSLY.

I liked this ep. ♥ Also yes, it was so pretty, sob. I don't always download the subs, but I think I'll have to just to make icons.

For one of the first times ever I had zero lag with my stream. And that really contributed to my absolute love for this episode I think. Everything was practically perfect - the animation, the music, the fight scenes, the humor (or, what I could make of it with only my manga knowledge and limited Japanese) . . . everything.

There's just so much I loved. Ed's nightmare and trauma at the beginning. Scar just suddenly showing up out of nowhere, and Al saving Ed! (Since I know the manga I was expecting that unfortunate officer to show up first, and actually gave a start when I realized Scar was standing there instead). The fight. Scar deconstructing Al. Roy and everyone showing up and saving Ed (I loved the animation and art so much in this scene. Who ever did the background art is awesome!) Riza's utter pwnage with saving useless-Roy (LMAO at the little puff of smoke of his failed flame attack). The reveal that Scar was Ishvalan. Hughes popping up into frame after the fight was over (I about died). Al punching Ed, yelling at Ed, punching Ed again, losing his arm and then yelling some more. The documentary style Ishval flashback.

The pace was spot-on perfect in this ep too. Before now, I've felt the eps were mostly rushed, but I think the pacing has finally leveled off much better these past two weeks, and the pacing in this ep was the best so far IMO.

I am going to wait for the subbed version before I make a final judgment, but I think this might be my favorite episode of all the ones that have aired so far.

AGREED WITH EVERYTHING!

I forgot about the random soldier in the manga. It explains Ed and Al's increased panic a bit more-this time they have no idea who Scar is ahead of time. No one to warn them that he's the serial alchemist killer. Just straight into the 'RUN FOR YOUR LIFE' bit.

God, the animation for this series is just BEAUTIFUL. It's so fluid and full of emotion that I love every moment of it, even the silly gag parts. The bashful way Ed moved in the flashback was just so damn sweet because it looked so real!

Anyhoo, I agree that I don't like the way Ed grovelled - I can understand staying down, or even looking away, but grinding your face into the pavement like some kid burying their face in a pillow? There wasn't enough build-up to justify that undignified amount of despair.

And Roy and the others looked so CUTE with their soft faces, awww. And Lust was SPOT ON and goddamn creepy. She's almost anti-fanservice.

I personally think the nightmare at the beginning was some pretty decent buildup.

This managed to beat out the last episode; I'm impressed. The scene at Lior was freaking depressing, and very well done. I actually like Envy's and Lust's new voices (Gluttony not so much). I'm glad we finally get to see Al actually saying something other than a couple of lines. I thought the addition of wide-eyed grovelly Edward was a brilliant one. Otherwise, he'd come off as way too badass. I like that they're making him at least a little more vulnerable than in the manga.

My two gripes? I felt the humor in the middle of the fight, and just after, was really jarring. Not as bad as the first few episodes, but still OTT. My second gripe is that the exposition in the middle of the fight was pretty Narmy for me, and very typically shounen. I feel like they didn't integrate it very well, and it honestly drew me out of the action when it happened.
dreamer1789: fma2dreamer1789 on May 3rd, 2009 06:00 pm (UTC)
I was actually surprised with how much I liked this episode. I'd expected it to be feared it'd be exactly the same as in season one. Definitely improvement. Ok, so who didn't think dream-chibi!Ed was cute. ^^ Also, ridiculous I know, the first other thing that had me cheering was: Ed's hair being soaked and actually really looking it (it was hardly noticeable in FMA:A unless he was in the shower.)

Like many others, I agree that Ed was a bit too subdued with Scar for the kill. Like, those whole five seconds when Scar is standing over Ed while talking to Mustang? I was waiting for Ed to kick Scar with his automail foot. ^^; But otherwise only praise.

I did like envy's new voice, though it'll take some getting used to. And of course, military gang for the win! XD Things are moving along nice and swift - already Marcoh next time, which means Scieszka & Barry the week after. (Eagerly awaiting later Barry/Riza scenes. ;) )

Ha! Same here...Iwasn't too exited about it but it was really good. Loved the fact they put Edward's nigthmare.
