Hit me with your best shot!
I am sure most of you are aware of the new FMA anime series, due to begin broadcasting in April. And a recent posting revealed that the original voice actors for Ed and Al will reprising their roles in the Japanese version (as far as I know, this new series has not yet been licensed in the US).

Well, I'm excited. Really excited! So I think it's time we all started putting this comm to work for more than fic/icon postings. I think it's time to DISCUSS. Share THEORIES. Share SPOILERS even, if you have any to dish.

The big talk, of course, is that this new series is likely going to follow the manga, picking up where the original anime series diverged from the manga, and continuing until the bitter, bitter end. I am not sure how reliable this information is, but as speculations go I think it is pretty solid. But what do you all think? Will it be Manga Redux, or something altogether new? What are you hoping to see?

And I know many of you are following the manga as it is being released in Japan (*), so let me ask you this... which of the manga characters are you most excited/hopeful to see? Are there particular voice actors you wish to play the roles of the new characters? I myself cannot WAIT until Olivia shows up. She is... so totally my favourite manga character, it isn't even funny. It's the sword and badassery and the fact that she makes a good het ship candidate for Scar and the hotness. Primarily the hotness.

And in general... I just want to get to know everyone again. I want to know what the older fans have been up to, what fics you've been reading, what OTPs you have been crushing on. I want to know what the newer fans are thinking; about how you became fans, and what aspects of the canon you like best (just be warned: I cannot promise the lack of spoilers in the comments, so proceed as if there could be spoilers for any of the current canon that has already been released).

Just keep things positive. I would love to talk to any and all of you. And I would like to encourage all of you to remember that this comm can be a great place for discussions, and my hope is to see this comm active again, the way it was during the first FMA anime run. I'm not a mod or anything, just a person who is eager to see this fandom thrive once more.

(*) And if you didn't know that was possible, go look at the scanlations here of the latest issues. But don't forget that the series is licensed, so if you like the manga at least consider buying the individual volumes which have been released already in English. I myself own all 17 volumes that are available to date. It would insane to buy them all at once, but each individual volume is cheap, so if you pace yourself according to your budget, almost anyone can do it.

I was under the impression that it was never actually confirmed that the new animu would be a redux. The short trailer gave me the impression that it was gonna be about the years between when Ed first joined the military and the start of the series.

I don't think it has been confirmed yet either... that's why I am wondering what everyone else thinks. I am also kind of hoping that if there is someone who has better information that they will share it. XD

I remember looking at the trailer, but I didn't get any distinct impressions off of it. Do you have a link?

For folks wanting to pick up the manga. Ebay is you friend. I picked up 1-14 for 60 bucks a few months ago- and hook line and sink her. :D I loved it.

OMG the new anime. IF it's based on the manga- I can't wait to hear Olivia's voice and see her animated. Holy shit @A@... I'm like.. FTFTT OH GOD APRIL COME PLZ. Even though her entry might be a while yet from the start of the series. And parts that were in the first anime, and are in the manga- I wonder how (if?) they're going to reanimate them. If at all it's based on the manga ahahaha.

Just dying here for content!

It better be the manga series. ;;

I will be able to cosplay Ling and people will know who I am.

The glee is like, bubbling within me constantly. And getting worse the closer April gets. I want to have some kind of PREMIERE PARTY with friends, but I don't know where, or how.

Fangirl much, I know, but god. Envy animated again, hell yes.

Damn it. I must be blind but I do not see much of a difference between manga and anime.

Then again I didn't notice that sisters standing before were TWINS so something must just be wrong with me.

I'm tending to think it's going to be the Manga Redux, but that's not based on anything but me thinking that makes the most sense. Althoug, if they do that, they're going to have a hard time not just "replaying" the first half of the anime, until the stories diverged... but I would love to see a lot of the stuff in the Manga animated. I really prefer anime to manga... while I love the story of the manga, I find it harder to follow the action in print than on the screen. And, story-wise, the Manga is not *quite* so homunculus-heavy later on. I'm not a huge fan of the homunculi.

But I won't be upset if it's an extension of the original anime, either. Except if it is, it would appear that it's pre-end-of-series, as we see Al in armour. (Although that could be a mis-leading flashback kind of thing like the start of CoS. I wanted to scream when it looked, at first, like the movie wasn't going to be post-series. I kinda like Human Al, and would be sad to go back to him trapped in the Armour...

I first encountered FMA via the anime. A friend of my bought some *REALLY* badly subbed versions of the anime & CoS, and made me copies. [Don't worry! I have since bought all of the licensed DVD's -- Yay! for alternate tracks in Japanese with subtitles!) and all volumes of the manga]. It's amazing how much I loved it, even with the horrid subbing. I am SO looking forward to old writers being inspired to write again, and for new blood to start writing, too. I'm with you! I want to see this fandom revived!

It'll be EPIC if Iwasaki-San did FMA's music

YES. PLEASE. one of the things I loved was how FMA had really awesome music (ignoring the character songfiles >_>), and I would love to see that continue!
UVERworld could be really nice, too.

I was under the impression that it would be a direct animation of the manga.
Probably mostly because I am uncertain how they could continue from the way they ended the first anime series with the movie and all.
I would love to see Lin and May and Lan Fan and Olivia animated, not to mention Envy's true form, along with the differences in the Homunculi's human forms since there are a few that are different.
Bonus for Ed actually being taller and having more Ed/Winry moments with the manga too.

I am relieved to hear that Romi and Rie are returning as Ed and Al, of course!
Hoping to hear that the rest will come back too, it would be odd for some of the voices to be different, though I am curious to Al's dub voice, since surely he has grown up and thus, prob sounds a bit older/ different now as opposed to back then when the series was first animated.

Envy's true form!!!!

I also want to see Envy's tadpole form.

He's cute no matter how deformed he is. This is a real accomplishment!

I hope it would be a manga redux too. We'll see though.

I would love Hughes' seiyuu please. (Keiji Fujiwara) That would coax me back into watching anime at the same level I did when I was much younger.

Also I have the manga in French, up to 17*(and the first volumes in Japanese.) I like what the French editors (Kurokawa) have done compared to Viz. (I like French translations of manga--they tend to be the most faithful to the originals in terms of not only translation, but format. Most retain the small size, covers and cover jackets. Some, like with their FMA series, retain any extra booklets)

*That was over a year an a half ago. Must be at 18 or 19 by now. o_o

Anyways, can't wait until April!

Did you ever seen the anime series Honey and Clover? Hughes' VA is responsible for one of the main characters, and if you liked him in FMA I think you'd really like the character he plays in H&C. There is a similarity to how the two roles are played out which allows him to employ both the serious and the goofy sides of his vocal talent. Obviously he's been in zillions of different things, but this is one that really sticks out to me as a must-see (er... must-listen?) for any dedicated Hughes/Keiji Fujiwara fan.

All the gossip I've heard says this is going to be a manga redux and I'm cool with that. I really like the manga and think it'll be awesome to see those images on paper brought to life on screen! :) I can not stand Ling tho and dread seeing him on screen. blecch! It'll be good to see Maes again and seeing Olivier in action will totally rock! Roy has a much more active part in the manga than he did in the anime so I'll definitely enjoy seeing more of Roy (my future husband)! Another thing the manga has going for it is that there is less of the homunculi poisoning everything and making life a living hell for Ed like they did in the original anime. That alone is a big bonus in my book! :) I'm anxious to see it and will, of course, buy it whenever it comes out here the US. My one hope and prayer for the US version is that Funimation uses the same English VAs. They'll probably have to get someone else who sounds like Aaron Dismuke did back when he did Al's voice but everyone else should be there - Vic Mignogna, Travis Willingham, Caitlin Glass, Colleen Clinkenbeard, etc etc. It just would be right without all of them there.
rhelpimtiredyo on February 8th, 2009 05:45 am (UTC)
I'm really hoping it's manga-based. I loved the anime, but there's something about the manga I love much better. <3

Someone above mentioned the Death Note anime following the manga closely and how that could get boring, but it wouldn't bother me at all, personally. I'd really love to be able to see everything animated, in color, fluid.

I don't know, I don't really see the logic in going back and creating an entirely different storyline. I don't know why Arakawa would approve of that, especially after she let the creators of the anime kind of do their own thing. It'd make the most sense for them to either remake it as the manga, or create a sequel series.

There's phrasing in some of the announcements that may just be coincidental, but things like "...the new television version of Hiromu Arakawa's Fullmetal Alchemist 'dark fantasy' manga" (from the Paku announcement) makes me lean toward a remake instead of something new. I feel like if it weren't connected to the manga, they'd just say "...version of the anime", or something to that effect. But that could just be me reading into things too deeply.
Number One Spoon: scar- 100 percent approvedherongale on February 10th, 2009 08:26 am (UTC)
It was me who mentioned the Death Note anime, but I should qualify my reservations somewhat. Death Note is a very suspense-filled story, with a lot of time spent setting up complex plot twists. FMA has a lot more action, with many more battle scenes and dynamic interactions. I would be delighted to see the manga action scenes faithfully animated... can you imagine how amazing most of them would be?

I just think that it would be good if they take the opportunity to fill out the manga story a little. They can be entirely faithful the manga while still giving us little surprises, like adding little bits of dialogue to established scenes, or giving us more details about some of the secondary and tertiary characters. I won't mind if it's a completely faithful adaptation, but if it's entirely predictable I don't think that would be as cool as a manga adaptation that gave us a few surprises here and there.
Ketita: ed / hei - triggerketita on February 8th, 2009 05:50 am (UTC)
I want to see Al's potential as a character realized. I think he was missed SO badly in the anime, and I want to see a manga adaptation if only for that - Al can be really cool and badass :) it took rereading the manga to remind myself why I really liked him the first time.
As for scenes, the chapters where Gluttony eats them are probably my favorites hands-down. There are a lot of parts I like, but that was just <3333

But you know what, I've been buying the manga as it's released in English, and I'm horribly disappointed. I think Viz is doing an awful job with FMA. The amount of typos, out-of-place text in speech bubbles, and wtf transliteration is astounding. Honestly, don't they have any editors at ALL?

mmm, theories. I think I have one, though it's not really concerning the "future" of the series, but background. *off to write it up*
rhelpimtiredyo on February 8th, 2009 05:57 am (UTC)
I totally agree with you with the whole Alphonse thing. Spot on.

Also, holla about Viz. There really is a large amount of blatant typos. It got to the point where I felt like I needed to edit the books myself. But, eh, I still buy 'em.

How will they handle the Havoc? WILL they? The whole lab incident was pretty pivotal in the Mustang Gunbu story arc.

I own the English Viz volumes... as I ADORE the scanlation. It would feel dirty to not buy the manga. I think I mostly buy the Viz version to see WHAT they will censor next. ;)
Number One Spoon: ed- sipping teaherongale on February 10th, 2009 08:13 am (UTC)
I am very much looking forward to Havoc! You know, Roy/Havoc always seemed to have this huge following in Japan that it didn't have here (at least, if my shopping of yahoo.jp is to be believed). It has seemed such a pity to me that he didn't pick up as much of a fandom as I think he should have... he's such a fun character. But I think that Havoc's awesomeness was really highlighted by his incident with Lust, and his recovery that followed. It gave his character a depth and pathos that made him soooo snuggable. So if the manga incident comes into the anime, that can only be for the good.

I join you in hoping that Havoc's storyline is given good play in the new anime. And also in your support of the official manga... I don't always care for the translation and edits either, but since I love FMA so much, and since I can afford to I would feel like a jerk for not supporting it.
Chloe-girl: semi-serious icongrass_angel on February 8th, 2009 12:15 pm (UTC)
I want Mei-chan and Ran Fuan. And useful!Alphonse and Winry.

And to be honest, I've drifted a bit from the FMA fandom, if only because of shinier and prettier fandoms came along. (I still love the fandom itself though, especially since it's one of the most intelligent and accepting ones I've seen.)
I doubt I'd be less interested in the new anime if it was a complete re-telling of the manga. Perhaps it's just the month-long waits for the manga has mellowed the story out for me, but the animated medium seems to bring a new sense of convoluted-ness as well as fast paced action.
I'm not sure how I'd react if it was just filler though. Probably sit back and watch the fandom as I have been doing for a while.
Number One Spoon: scar- fuck your shit upherongale on February 10th, 2009 08:07 am (UTC)
Well, if it does end up being a manga adaptation, I can't see there being much filler. Perhaps there would be some "original to the anime" episodes, but the manga is almost over. The need to produce filler would not be the same as it is for series such as Naruto and Bleach, which appear to be neverending.
