Fullmetal Alchemist's Original Ed, Al to Reprise Roles
We can all breath a little easier now! This was just announced over on Anime News Network.

Romi Paku, Rie Kugiyama to play main characters again in new TV series

I honestly can say that if they did not have Romi and Rie reprise their original roles as Ed and Al, I don't think I would have watched the new series. I just don't think I could watch Ed and Al on screen and not have their familiar voices come out of their mouths. I had been holding my breath ever since it was reported that they were still casting voice actors. I'm still hopeful that most will come back to reprise their original roles, but for now I can look forward to seeing this in April knowing that Romi and Rie will once again be the Elric Brothers!!

oh my goodness, that is wonderful news! I'm so excited to see this now!

I was probably not going to watch if the voices were any different. :b

I don't really care one way or another about Rie, but I really cannot like Romi. To me she just never had that naturally boyish sound to her voice the way other women who voice boys in anime do (like Mitsuki Saiga). I can't hear her Ed, or her Ken from Digimon, and accept it as a boy. I mean, I'm sure she's a marvelous actress and all that, but she just has never sounded like a convincing boy to me.

I think it was just jarring to me because for both of her major roles, I'd heard their English voices first, and they were so. MALE. And then to hear them sound so. Unmanly in the Japanese version just threw me off, especially since it sounded like she was trying to way to hard to sound like a boy, where some people either don't try or don't have to try. I find it more distracting if someone's noticably trying to sound different than if they just don't try at all. But that's just me and I know it's a really unpopular opinion in this fandom, but. :|

Actually, I know what you mean. I'm glad they're keeping their roles, but I probably wouldn't have been at all bothered if we had slightly more boyish sounding Ed and Al for the new series. Fine, Ed has long hair, but he doesn't have to sound girly also... and he doesn't quite fit the stereotype of the "boys with female v.a." imho.
