A little something I thought I'd inquire about..

I had recently been exchanging Emails with Vic (the voice actor that will be doing Ed's voice). He seems like the nicest guy ever and is extremely polite. He told me that he's watching the subs to get the feel of his character.

Wouldn't that mean that FUNi should thank fansubbers everywhere? If there weren't for them, the voice actors wouldn't be able to relate to their characters as well. They'd have to try and understand what's going on and why Ed is doing this and that. And FUNi and companies want us to shut down all BT trackers hosting the subs? Bleh. I understand it's losing them money, but sheesh.. be grateful!

No the only company wanting to shut down trackers is ADV not Funi, and from a few con reports and my own experience at Fanime, FUNi is encouraging the fansubbers because face it, it's free advertising and they've hinted that even if we all have fansubs they'll make the DVD releases so enticing with extras and merchandising that we'll be clamoring to get them anyway.

I see no such support from ADV and they're the ones being the bastards about fansubs, Bandai doesn't care much either unless its Gundam (at least I think it's bandai who has gundom or if thats Geneon).

Bsides ADV isnt CONSISTENT with what theyre targeting. First off Sailormoon which THEY DONT HAVE ANY MORE! ANd they're missing KaleidoStar, Mermaid Melody, Chrono Crusade and a few other key Shoujo title.

It's like they only care about the ones that are popular and letting fansubbers do what they want with the less popular ones.
Alymother on June 13th, 2004 04:41 pm (UTC)
Yeah, it's Bandai that has Gundam (well, Gundam Wing anyhow)

Ok, if it wasn't FUNi making all of us take down the trackers.. then who was it? I don't see why ADV would, cause they don't own FMA. I am double confused about this.

I really don't see them losing any money over fansubs; they're just being greedy, brainless bastards because they can. Did people stop buying movies when VCR's were invented and suddenly they could record movies right off their television? Bloody hell, no. The same goes for mp3s vs. CDs and fansubs vs. dvds. We watch/listen to tv, mp3s & fansubs because they're more accessible, available (and often accurate). But if we really love something we generally want to have the best, most professional quality version of it eventually also.

As for voice acting, you'll never convince the companies to be grateful for the fansubs because none of the companies that I'm familiar with even care if the actors are intimate with their characters. The voice acting industry is so drastically different here than in Japan... they bring actors in and give them a brief summary of the character(s). If the person just happens to have the right sound by their standards then they cast them. At which point the actors are brought in to record their parts in fragments, completely out of order, so that the majority of dub actors don't have the faintest clue what the hell is even happening in the storyline beyond the hasty out-of-context instructions they receive at the start of each session.

The fact that the actor you mentioned is researching his role reflects great on him, especially considering VA's aren't generally pressured to do so, but it doesn't unfortunately say anything about FUNi. ¬_¬;

Actually.. I don't end up buying the anime's after. I guess I"m being greedy too.. everyone is. XD

Hey, that's awesome that your in contact with Vic. And Funi shouldn't exactly be greatfull, but more appreciative.

Could you ask Mr. Magnola for any info along the lines of the other VAs, or the music? I'm in dire need of information for fma_dub. ^^
Alymother on June 13th, 2004 06:11 pm (UTC)
I asked him about the other VA's and the only people he said were cast so far are Ed and Al. He said to check out FUNi's site for mor information later on. x_x

As pointed out by everyone else, Funi isn't the one trying to pull the plugs on the subbing industry. I doubt any company will be able to kill of effort entirely (and, if they do, I'll just get the French subs).

I, too, however, do not see the point of trying to kill the fun-sub industry. If anything, it popularizes an anime before it comes out in the US, and it makes people more enthusiastic to be able to get the DVDs because, let's face it, subs are all fine and dandy, but having episodes safe on nice, formated DVDs is even better. And I agree with the argument that it's free advertising; it attracts attention and early interest.

And it isn't like we're just going to watch a series once and then think "oh, never need to see that again now that I know what happens". With me, I become more interested in the series if I know the ending; I like to go back and search through it all to find different points I missed.
Alymother on June 13th, 2004 08:25 pm (UTC)
Exactly. I watch a series over and over usually... hence why I've burned off a few series for later looking ^^

I know this has nothing to do with your post, but I absolutely ADORE your icon.

And yes, your point is completely true. Watching fansubs give voice actors to get in tune with their character. If only there weren't any plagiarism or copyright business between them...

Speaking as a fansubber, I could care less if they thanked subbers. (shrugs) Fansubbers do what they do for the fans, not the companies. Also, fansubbing is NOT an industry. If it was, it would have been shut down already kthnxbye!

When did I say it was an industry? o_O I just thought you guys deserve more credit then you receive. *shrugs* sorry?

It's comforting to know that FUNi is leaving the subbers alone, at least ...

Vic is watching fansubs to get a feel for Ed?

Oh Thank God!! You have no idea how many dub voices, when asked, say that they don't study the original characters at all @_@

If FUNi is decent to the fansubbers and comes through on promises of goodies with the DVDs, then there might be a snowball's chance in hell of even my buying them, instead of importing the originals. We'll see, but if they're laying low during the current witch hunt, it does make me look at them a little more favorably.

And as for the VA's extra effort...I don't know how to get in touch with the guy, but anyone who does ought to send him major accolades for researching the part. More of them need to do that. *nods happily in his direction* Even if I don't ever watch the dub, it's nice to hear people taking the work seriously.

yeah, I just emailed him a reply and congrats'd him and thanked him quite a few times without looking cheesy. ;)
