Chapter 1: The New Assignment

It was raining outside the Military Headquarters as Edward and Alphonse Elric looked up at the front gates.
Edward, 15, had blond hair, tied up in a braid and golden eyes; he also wore a red coat that depicted, on the back, a winged snake wrapped around a cross; also he was unusually short for his age but had a temper to match. Another thing about him were his right arm and left leg, made from auto-mail, a reminder of their attempt at the forbidden sin of human transmutation when they tried to bring their mother back from the dead.

Alphonse was his younger brother, aged 14, and an oddity in himself. He had such a soft, young voice, though it was unusual to hear it coming from a 7-foot tall suit of armor, to which his soul was placed in with the help of his brother sacrificing his right arm to save him because he lost his entire body.

“What are we going to do now Brother?” Al asked.
“We’re going to catch cold if we stay out here…if only we could find someone to let us in. I need to talk to Mustang to see if he heard anything else about the Philosopher’s Stone.” Ed said.
“Brother…Look! There’s someone over there!” Al cried pointing out to the side.
Ed looked over and saw someone in a military outfit about to walk by the gate.

“Hey! Over here! Can you let us in?” Ed shouted, jumping up in the air, waving his arms.
The officer looked over to see where the yelling was coming from and saw Al standing by the gate. A little shocked to see a large suit of armor standing there, he turned toward the gate and walked over.
“Was that you calling me?” he asked.
“Ummm…no, it wasn’t me, it was my brother” replied Al.
“Where? Oh there you are, almost didn’t see you there. Wow, You’re really small to see from a distance,” said the officer, looking down at Ed.
Ed turned red and his face got this really angry, demonic look. He hated to be called short more than anything . Al knew this better than anyone, Ed got really mad whenever someone made a comment about his brother’s height, he didn’t like it when it got to the point where he had to hold his brother back so he wouldn’t tear them limb from limb from his tantrums.
“Whoa! Sorry…I didn’t mean anything bad by it. Now, can I help you with anything?” cried the guard with a scared look on his face when he witnessed Ed’s temper.
“Yeah, you can. I’m here to see Colonel Mustang. I’m Edward Elric, the Fullmetal Alchemist” said Ed, holding up his watch for the officer to see.
The officer looked at the watch.
“You’re the Fullmetal Alchemist? I thought it was you because of all the armor”
“God!!!! Why does everyone think that? I’m the one with the silver watch!!” Ed screamed.
“Sorry, here let me get the gate for you sir” said the guard as he put his key in the lock and opened the big iron gates.
“Again, I apologize for the ‘small’ remark”
Ed lifted up his hand as a sign of understanding as they headed into the building.
“Next time someone calls me small, they’re going to get one right between the freaking eyes!!”
“Oh, Brother”.

“I’m so glad we got out of that rain, you’re completely soaked Brother” said Al as they entered the headquarters. Ed grabbed his hair and started to wring the water from it.
“Don’t worry about it, I’ve got it covered” said Ed.
He then clapped his hands, blue sparks flew up around them and enveloped Ed and in less than a second, he was completely dry.
“Here Al, you’re not good to me if you rust up and can’t move”.
With another clap and a flash of light, Al was now dry.
“That’s better, I needed a bath anyway” replied Al.
They walked down the hall; it was pretty quiet as they reached Col. Mustang’s office.

Colonel Roy Mustang was a tall, good-looking, young man with short, black hair. He was also a State Alchemist and like all others he had a second name commissioned to him, he was known as the Flame Alchemist. Using alchemy, he could create fire just by snapping his fingers when he was wearing his gloves, made of ‘Ignition Cloth’. He was organizing some papers in his office when he heard a knock at the door.
“Who is it?” he called.
Ed and Al stuck their heads in at Mustang’s response.
“Edward Elric reporting sir. Just wanted to let you know that we’re back from the mission and also wanted to find out if you had any more leads on the Stone.”
Mustang looked up over the stack of papers that he was holding, to see Ed and Al standing there.
“Oh there you are, you know Ed, you’re hard to see over these papers, if you…..”
Al sighed and walked toward Mustang.
“Here Colonel, let me hold those for you, they look heavy.” said Al as he took them away and put them down on top of a nearby desk.
“Thank you. Well, I have some good news and some bad news for you Ed” said Roy.
“What is it sir?” asked Ed.
“The bad news is that so far, I don’t have any more information about the Philosopher’s Stone to give you, but the good news is that in fact, I do have an assignment for you”.
“What is it?” asked Ed “, to do your laundry?”
Mustang looked up at the obvious sarcasm.
“No Fullmetal, that’s not it, but good idea, I’ll have to put that on my list of things to do”
Ed’s face turned bright red at Mustang’s comeback.
“Uh…why you …”
“I’d watch that temper of yours Ed. I need your help with a case that we’re working on. There have been some disappearances and robberies recently and there have been reports of some mysterious characters wandering around the crime scenes and by some old warehouses by the lake. Everyone has been trying to find more clues, but to no avail. I would like your help as we investigate the warehouses Ed”.
Ed looked at the Colonel, and thought about it.
‘It would be boring around if there weren’t any leads to the Philosopher’s Stone, and it would give me something to do.’
“OK. I’ll help out” answered Ed.
“Good, the others will be back in half an hour. You two get some rest and we’ll head out tomorrow after a short meeting”.
