Icon Hotlinking and Theft on LJ
There's a thief out there who has found a way to automatically snag things from the LJ picture feed without regard to who (s)he is stealing from or what they are stealing. No credit is being given at all for any of the icons being taken and people posting comments there do not care things are being stolen. All they seem to care about is laughing at people who are demanding this person take the icons down. Just today I found one of my icons on that community so I'm very certain there are icons from others in this very community out there. Also, it seems it's not just icons too it's people's pictures so any related community that posts personal photos should take the same steps as the iconists. Here's the information and what you can do about it as found on book_icons.

There is a post here in icon_extras about a community called iconscraper. Not only does the owner, samplebitch, troll the LiveJournal picture feed for icons, (s)he also hotlinks all the images that the feed finds.

I never realized that you could make an RSS feed that requests all the icons that are posted on LJ public posts, whether it be in communities or personal journals. This person has a program that will automatically nab any and all icons that are used and they put them in the community with no care for what the subject matter is. Their mentality is that if you don't want someone stealing personal pictures of yourself, your family, or your children...you don't belong putting them on the Internet and it's your own damn fault so live with it.

There IS a way to prevent this from happening...

1. Open up adminconsole. http://www.livejournal.com/admin/console/
2. For personal Journals, copy/paste the following: set latest_optout yes.
3. For communities, copy/paste the following: set "for" COMMUNITYNAME latest_optout yes.(where it says COMMUNITYNAME, delete that and type in the name of your community)

Does this stuff work only on icons linked to an imagehost, or on those as well, which were directly uploaded to LJ from one's computer?

There were icons on there from current icon contests that came from photobucket accounts. It's not just things from people's LJ scrapbooks.

I didn't mean the scrapbook; I don't have one. When uploading an icon, you can give an url, or browse for a file on your own computer. Is this bitch able to collect icons uploaded by using the latter method?

I'm not certain how the image feed works on LJ. It seems, however, to be only the icons that people make in posts to their icon journals and comms and icons made in reply to posts. The Karou icon I linked to in an earlier comment that got posted there is not in my userpics like the one I'm using for this reply.

Going along with prior comments there are rules in place for icontests that state you cannot repost an icon during a current contest. This person is violating a ton of icontest rules. If mods of those comms knew about this place the people in those icontests could be banned for those icons showing up again.

I think it takes icons from any public entry, be it the originating post, within the post, or the icons that are in the comments.

I just know they're blaming people for not f-locking their posts if they don't want there stuff reposted.

As if looking and taking are the same thing. There are reasons people don't flock everything. (Usually involving a fondness to share, or less internet or computer savvy relatives.)

I think she was just getting icons culled from iconmakers' posts, not from people uploading for their own usericons.
