Icon Hotlinking and Theft on LJ
There's a thief out there who has found a way to automatically snag things from the LJ picture feed without regard to who (s)he is stealing from or what they are stealing. No credit is being given at all for any of the icons being taken and people posting comments there do not care things are being stolen. All they seem to care about is laughing at people who are demanding this person take the icons down. Just today I found one of my icons on that community so I'm very certain there are icons from others in this very community out there. Also, it seems it's not just icons too it's people's pictures so any related community that posts personal photos should take the same steps as the iconists. Here's the information and what you can do about it as found on book_icons.

There is a post here in icon_extras about a community called iconscraper. Not only does the owner, samplebitch, troll the LiveJournal picture feed for icons, (s)he also hotlinks all the images that the feed finds.

I never realized that you could make an RSS feed that requests all the icons that are posted on LJ public posts, whether it be in communities or personal journals. This person has a program that will automatically nab any and all icons that are used and they put them in the community with no care for what the subject matter is. Their mentality is that if you don't want someone stealing personal pictures of yourself, your family, or your children...you don't belong putting them on the Internet and it's your own damn fault so live with it.

There IS a way to prevent this from happening...

1. Open up adminconsole. http://www.livejournal.com/admin/console/
2. For personal Journals, copy/paste the following: set latest_optout yes.
3. For communities, copy/paste the following: set "for" COMMUNITYNAME latest_optout yes.(where it says COMMUNITYNAME, delete that and type in the name of your community)

That's really pathetic. I saw a bunch of my stuff up here too. ><
Chibi Halochibihalo on October 17th, 2006 07:08 pm (UTC)
And the problem is when they do steal stuff, and they do because the owner of that place stole two icons from what I recognized, they don't do proper credit. Complaining about it doesn't work becuase they twist the words the iconist uses and make it look like we're being babies about it. The only thing you can do is block yourself and any communities you run from the LJ picture feed. However, from what I've seen and read LJ doesn't even let you know this option exists on their admin console. Pretty sneaky if you ask me.

These people who belong to that community care more about e-fame than taking the time to spend twenty seconds crediting a person. They care more about a person who for months has stolen people's artwork. Some people I know use their own handdrawn artwork for their icons. I don't think some of the artists in this community who give their close personal friends permission to use their art in an icon will be too pleased to find out (s)he and others are stealing their work without credit. Asking them to take down icons isn't going to do jack as is bringing it to LJ's attention. One person did and all they got was a nice form letter saying some act about the internet won't let them legally shut the guy down for theft.

That BITCH!
I refuse to look through them all...
But please, if anyone finds one of my icons, stab her for me, ne?
Chibi Halochibihalo on October 17th, 2006 08:32 pm (UTC)
I already, in just one or two posts from today that I peeked at, saw someone's Ed icon they made. I saw this very icon of my own in the first of today's posts. Ten to one says no one will credit once they steal the stolen icons. Commenting there only gets your words twisted and you called a liar. Some poor mother demanded the icon of her own child be removed and they just laughed at her. People have reported this to LJ but they can't legally do anything about it. So we have to take action for ourselves and post that code into our Admin consoles. We need to give him less stuff to steal.

Linking the icon back to the original post I think is actually not too bad. However, when that woman asked them nicely to take down the picture of her child and they said that she should've posted it as F.O. and refused to take it down just shows that they're a bunch of ignorant, lewd, uncouth douchebags. >:O

Thank you for notifying! I'll try and spread the word to the comms I know of!

It's really pathetic how they have so much talent (to make a program like that?!) and yet use it for such pathetic purposes. >_>
ai_melpomaen on October 17th, 2006 08:59 pm (UTC)
Lots of people need to report her and hopefully the stupid community will go down.
I mean really, what an absolutely f*cking waste of time shes doing.

Does this stuff work only on icons linked to an imagehost, or on those as well, which were directly uploaded to LJ from one's computer?
jalendavi_ladyjalendavi_lady on October 17th, 2006 09:17 pm (UTC)
There were icons on there from current icon contests that came from photobucket accounts. It's not just things from people's LJ scrapbooks.

I'm not an "icon creator", but thanks for the heads up with the command. Though I don't mind if people SEE my little doggeh, or me with my little doggeh, really, he's MY doggeh, and well... I'm a little possessive, even THOUGH he is the cutest thing in the world...

(I'm so submitting him to CuteOverload.)
Mistymistyladybug on October 18th, 2006 12:23 am (UTC)
That is really, really wrong. I don't want any of my icons/pictures/ANYTHING stolen and posted by some random person! Thanks for the heads up, but I don't know how to operate that admin console thingy, can someone step-by-step tell me how to protect myself, please? I am such a noob when it comes to stuff like that.. x3
Chibi Halochibihalo on October 18th, 2006 12:28 am (UTC)
Sure thing.

1. Open up adminconsole. http://www.livejournal.com/admin/console/
2. For personal Journals, copy/paste the following: set latest_optout yes into the enter commands box.
3. Hit the execute button.

You'll know when you have the command done properly when you see "User property 'latest_optout' set to 'yes'" under a table with what was set on your admin console. Any other questions feel free to ask.

I've been trying to figure out if this guy is in violation of Article XVI paragraph 20 of the TOS. It says something about bots and continualy looking for the same code or something.

Hotlinking
Hi, I haven't used LJ much, and I wanted to ask how you avoided hotlinking. I'm not sure what it involves, so I can avoid it.

Re: Hotlinking
This nice little Wikipedia article on hotlinking can clear things up better than I could.

I like how in one post he/she/it writes: "Let me begin by saying that you can go to hell."

Seems like a lovely person. -.-

That's just really, really pathetic when someone just goes around all day & steals icons/images. Thanks for saying how to protect yourself with the admin console, I'll be sure to spread the word of this bitch & give the instructions on how to use the admin console
Chibi Halochibihalo on October 18th, 2006 06:47 am (UTC)
Right now that's the only way we can protect ourselves from any of our images getting into the feed.
Catie: [FMA] Sinnercatystorm on October 18th, 2006 10:28 am (UTC)
I must be the only person who doesn't give two shits about what's going on with that. So they've posted/looked at/possibly took an icon I made! Oh noes! Unless it's an image I actually DREW (which I'm sure is the case occasionally and then people have every right to get upset); icons can be replicated by anyone at any time with no prior knowledge. It's an image that I don't own that I've resized and applied filters and text and funky coloring to.

If it's pictures I've posted of family and friends, I post with the observation that THIS IS THE INTERNET and is public in nature. There is NO such thing as privacy on the internet, it's just an illusion. If you didn't realize that now, this should be a wake-up call.

That person is a jackass and they're doing something that's a pain the ass. I'm glad it's making people use the admin console, which is something that everyone should at least take a look at once. All the same, the people who are wanking about icons DO look like idiots, because for god's sake they're icons. At least the people who are having issues with personal pictures own the content of said pictures.
Feria: [Hagaren] Unforgiveablewithout_reason on October 19th, 2006 12:27 pm (UTC)
Oh, you're not the only one. I agree with you; people have no ownership of images that they didn't create and put fancy colours on. It's hardly enough to be called a creation so why are people more concerened about this than people who actually steal artworks that are copyrighted to artist that are not being paid to draw?

I really love the "Blame the victim" mentality in that comm.

As if it's OUR fault that someone else is using a script to mine our posts for items not meant for re-distribution beyond the intended audience and occasional errant viewer. -_-
