Edward Elric sighed in blissful relief as he turned off the water faucet to the makeshift shower outside of the Rockbell home, having just washed away all sweat and dirt. Alphonse Elric quietly crept up behind his older brother after watching him shower, having been thinking about how much he missed having a body made of flesh & blood, and if it would be a good idea to tell Ed his feelings towards him now, since if Edward hit him for whatever reason, he wouldn’t feel it.
“Umm... brother...” Al said barely above a whisper, embarrassment taking over, as he was unsure as how to go about this subject. Edward spun around, startled by the sudden sound of his little brother’s voice.
“Oh, hey Al. What’s up?” Ed said cheerfully as he plastered on a fake, toothy grin. “Can you hand me my towel please?”
“Sure brother, here you go.” Al said as he handed Edward the towel that had been lazily tossed down on a grassy patch of ground next to him. “Uh, I was just wondering, when do you think we’ll find the Philosopher’s Stone? I mean, I was just thinking about when I had my body, and I just got to thinking and...” Alphonse trailed off when he noticed Edward’s entire face darken slightly, most likely in sadness.
Oh no, now I made brother sad! Oh, he’s going to be sulking for a while, probably cry when he thinks no one’s watching, and it’s my entire fault for even bringing it up in the first place!
“Heh, I don’t know Al, probably any day now, I have a feeling we’re getting pretty damn close to it. So hang in there, alright?” Edward said, trying to sound reassuring while once again slipping that grinning mask back in place.
“Ok, but brother, I was just thinking about...” Al trailed off, fear & embarrassment having completely taken over.
I was just thinking about when we were kids before we tried to bring back mom and how once you were asleep I’d touch you, and kiss you, and watch you sleep because... because, I love you Ed, and I’m too afraid to tell you...
“You were just thinking about what, Al?” Ed asked, curiosity lacing his voice as he slipped on his shorts. “It’s ok to tell me you know, I am your big brother after all!”
“It’s... It’s nothing! Never mind, it’s nothing to worry about!” Al laughed nervously as he rubbed the back of his head.
And I want my original body back because I miss your feel, your scent, your taste, your warmth, everything about you brother that I can’t have in this empty shell of a body...
“Oh, ok, Al, if you’re sure...” Edward said, sounding somewhat disappointed.
“Yeah, I’m sure!” Alphonse said as he turned and began walking away but stopped when he heard Edward’s voice.
“Hey, Al...” Ed said quietly, his head bowed so Alphonse couldn’t see his face. “You know... you know what I was trying to tell you last night but couldn’t because I was afraid of what your reaction would be...? I-it was... it was...” Edward stopped to let out a heavy sigh.
“It was what, brother?” Alphonse asked, taking a few steps towards Ed.
“I-I can’t say it, it’s not important, never mind Al.” Edward said as he walked past Al, his head still bowed, hiding his face, but stopped in his tracks when he felt an armored hand grab his flesh shoulder.
“Ed, tell me what it is, I don’t care if you don’t want to say it, I want to know what it is!” Al said, raising his voice slightly to get his point across.
“Back off Al, you don’t need to know, it’s not important! Now lemme GO!!” Ed shouted as he began to struggle against his younger brother’s grip, but was taken by complete surprise when Alphonse spun him around and slammed him into the side of the house a little harder than really necessary, hands digging into his arms so hard his flesh arm was starting to bleed out from under Al’s hand. Alphonse hadn’t realized how hard his grip was, or how hard he’d slammed Edward until he saw the look of fear in his eyes and the blood running down his arm.
“Brother...I—“ Al was saying until he was cut off by Edward.
“Al... let go... please... you’re hurting me...” Edward begged barely above a whisper, his voice cracking slightly from fear as tears of pain ran down his cheeks.
“Brother... I-I’m so sorry!” Alphonse cried out as he pulled Ed into an affectionate hug, internally sobbing for having hurt Edward. “I’m so sorry brother! I didn’t realize I was hurting you; please forgive me!”
“Al... I forgive you.” Edward said, his voice muffled slightly against Alphonse’s armor. “But it’s my fault, I should’ve told you this... along time ago...”
“You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to, Brother.” Al said as he let go of Ed, sitting him down and grabbing his towel, tenderly wrapping his bleeding arm in it.
“No, even if I don’t want to, I have to, you have a right to know. Alphonse, I... I haven’t told you this b-because I’m terrified that you’ll think I’m a sick freak and leave me all alone, and even if you didn’t, it’d probably only be long enough for us to find the Philosopher’s Stone and to restore your body...” Edward said sadly, his head bowed down once again so Al couldn’t see his face.
“Brother, I don’t think you’re a sick freak, why would you think that?”
“Be-because, Al, I-I... I don’t love you right!” Ed let out a sob as he brought his knees up to his chest and pressed his forehead against them.
“You mean... you love me... romantically? Not brotherly? That’s what you’ve been trying to tell me all this time?” Al couldn’t keep the tone of amused happiness out of his voice no matter how hard he tried. He wouldn’t have wanted for anything better to come out of his brother’s mouth (except that he’d found the Philosopher’s Stone) even if he’d wished for it!
“Y-yes... You hate me, don’t you?” Ed let out another sob, this time louder as he looked up at Alphonse from across his knees.
“No brother, I don’t hate you! That’s the same exact thing I was trying to tell you earlier, but I was too embarrassed and afraid to tell you! That’s why I was asking about when you think we’d find the Philosopher’s Stone, so we can get our original bodies back, because brother... before I lost my body, I... I would kind of touch you and kiss you when you were asleep…” Al laughed nervously, afraid of what Ed’s reaction to that will be.
“You...you mean, that was you? I always thought that it was just a dream...” Edward said more to himself than anyone while his flesh fingers gently touched his smiling lips.
“You’re not mad brother?” Al spoke in a tone of shock.
“Hell no, I’m mad because you should’ve woke me up when you were doing that!” Ed shouted playfully, a genuine smile gracing his lips as he arranged himself comfortably in Al’s lap and leaned his head against Alphonse’s chest lovingly, his eyes drooping slightly with fatigue.
“I’m sorry brother, I will next time, alright? Hey, what should we do about your arm? Because won’t Winry and Auntie Pinako be wondering what happened when we go inside?” Al asked as he wrapped one arm around Ed’s waist as the other gingerly took Ed’s flesh arm and cradled it.
“Hmm... we’ll tell them I got hurt while we were sparring, how’s that?” Ed replied quietly as he drifted to sleep while the sun drifted underneath the horizon, watching the moon as it took its place in the sky.
