Author’s Note: this was written for my friend rock_n_rollgirl when she noted that I write too much yaoi and elricest. I agree with her that I haven’t written het in a long time, well, a few months, so I told her I would write a special EdxWin just for her. Also, my sister and beta gave me the idea for the songfic song. She loves The Fray, and although they aren’t my usual choice for songs or my taste in music, I like the lyrics. They fit. Enjoy!

She Is

“She Is” by The Fray

Do not get me wrong I cannot wait
for you to come home
For now you’re not here and I’m not there
It’s like we’re on our own
To figure it out, consider how
to find a place to stand
Instead of walking away and
Instead of nowhere to land

This is going to break me clean in two
This is going to bring me close to you

She is everything I need that I never knew I wanted
She is everything I want that I never knew I needed

It’s all up in the air and we stand
still to see what comes back down
I don’t know where it is, I don’t know when,
But I want you around
When it falls into place with you and I,
we go from if to when
Your side and mind are both behind its indication

This is going to bring me clarity
This’ll take the heart right out of me

She is everything I need that I never knew I wanted
She is everything I want that I never knew I needed

This is going to bring me to my knees
I just want to hold you close to

She is everything I need
that I never knew I wanted
She is everything I want
that I never knew I needed

The metal sparkled in the light of the overhead lamp as Winry Rockbell polished the smooth wrench. Her hands smoothly worked over the surface of the tool, cleaning the dust from the tiny grooves. She held the wrench close to her face so that she might inspect it. Perfectly clean. Winry sighed, still looking at the wrench. It was a wrench she used for automail, but not just any automail. Winry saved this wrench to use on a special automail prosthetic.

Winry Rockbell used that wrench on Edward Elric’s automail limbs.

Clickity clack, clickity clack! The sounds of the train wheels on the metal track filled the air with their repetitive rhythm. Any ordinary person would have been bothered by the never ceasing sound, but Edward Elric was no ordinary person. He lay on the seat, limbs splayed out, snoring rather loudly.

“Ed,” Alphonse Elric groaned from his seat on the bench opposite his sleeping brother. “Can’t you be a little quieter?” he asked, reaching over to gently shake Ed in hopes of waking him.

Several people were beginning to stare, at least more so than usual, and even Al was getting annoyed by Ed’s snoring. Ed, however, thought otherwise; he wouldn’t wake up when Al shook him.

“Edward!” Al practically yelled at him, but he was still fast asleep. “He must be really tired,” Al settled upon. They had been on a string of grueling missions lately, despite the fact that Al had already gotten his body back. Realizing that Ed wasn't going to wake up, Al shut the door to the compartment, blocking out the rest of the prying world.

Edward was anything but tired, though, he was just having strangely pleasant dreams.

“Hey Winry, thanks for fixing my automail,” Ed said.

Winry bent over, tightening a bolt. “No problem Ed, just don’t get it all beaten up again!” she laughed, smiling.

Ed had never noticed how
nice she was. He had known that she wasn’t mean or anything, but he had never stopped and realized exactly how good she had been to him over the years. “No, really Winry, thanks.”

She paused to look up at him. “You okay, Ed? Normally we’d be fighting by now,” she noted, staring into his eyes.

He was immediately embarrassed by what he’d said. It had come out all mushy and romantic, totally not what he wanted to convey. Or did he? “I guess you’re right...” he replied.

Winry resumed her work, once again bending over. This time Ed noticed her movements and how when she bent over, he could get a nice look down--

Ed blushed furiously. He knew he wasn’t supposed to look, but he had never taken notice of what she wore. Was it his fault that she wore a tube top to fix him in? Thankfully, Winry did not notice that Ed had just stared down her shirt and subsequently blushed redder than his coat. But she did notice that he was still acting weird.

“Really, Ed, what’s bothering you...” her voice trailed off in his thoughts as he stared at her face. Was everything new to him? How could he have not noticed the way her blonde hair framed her face, her sparkling eyes, and her lips. He was staring at those lips, longing to touch them, to feel them...

Edward shook his head, which caused Winry to look at him even more strangely, one eyebrow cocked. “I’m fine, fine, yeah,” he told her, although both were unconvinced.

“Okay,” she sighed, getting up to grab some more tools.

“No, wait, Winry!” he exclaimed, grabbing her wrist to prevent her from leaving.

She spun around, worry in her eyes. “What is it, Ed?”

“I, uh--” he stammered, lost for words. Why didn’t he want her to leave, it was only going to be for a minute? Because he, he couldn’t stand to be without her.

Ed leaned in and kissed her, full on the lips.

“I love you, Winry,” he whispered into her ear.

She pulled away. “Oh, Ed, I--”

Ed jolted upright on the wooden seat. “Huh?!” He had just been in Resembool with Winry, doing... but now he was here? He clutched at his spinning head.

Al laughed. “Were you dreaming, or something?” he asked his older brother. “You kept talking in your sleep.”

“What?” Ed blinked a few times. It had been a dream? And he had just been getting to the good part when Al interrupted him. He hadn’t even gotten to know Winry’s feelings. “Talking in my sleep?” Then it dawned on him. “What did I say?!” he demanded.

Al only laughed harder, clearly enjoying this. “You said something about Winry and then ‘I love you’!”

“Noooo!” Ed moaned; his life as he knew it was over. “Why did you wake me?!” he hissed, angry that his secret was not so secret anymore. Not that he was ashamed of it, no just a little embarrassed that he admitted it in his sleep.

Al looked out the window. It was sunset. “It’s getting close to dinner time.”

“Oh.” Ed, too looked out the widow. The countryside looked vaguely familiar... “Hey, Al, where are we?”

“Just outside of Resembool, why?”

Ed just smiled. “Think Granny Pinako and Winry will mind having some guests for dinner?”

“What do you mean, Ed?” Al knew that when Ed got that look in his eyes, the mischievous one he had now, things were going to get crazy. Or at least, crazier.

“Come on!” Ed grabbed his suitcase and opened the door. “We’re getting off in Resembool!” He ran out from their compartment towards the front of the train.

“Ed, wait!” Al called to him, but it was no use. Sighing, Al grabbed his own suitcase, and chased after his brother.

Winry Rockbell did not throw a wrench at Edward Elric when he showed up unexpectedly on her doorstep. Rather, she hugged him back.
