A FMA AMV Challenge Community
Hey. I usually don't like shamelessly whoring out anything that I do, but I just set up fmamv_challenge. It's a AMV challenge community for the FMA fandom and we're just starting out. We're in desperate need of people who are interested in competing as well as voters to help decide each month's winners.

The basic idea is a monthly challenge using a song, pairing, episode, theme or character and allows each AMV maker to interpert it as they wish. The winner is decided by popular vote each month. If you think you're interested please join.

This month's challenge is a song challenge. More information on this month's competition is here. The complete rules can be found in the community's profile.

Hope to see you guys there.

I'm definitely joining this comm. It might inspire me to start making AMVs again. I'm afraid I've gotten rather lax lately.

That does sound like an interesting idea. Question for you though~ it's completely by popular vote and is video quality counted (ie: subs vs. raw) or not or is that something for the viewers to decide? Thanks.

Will probably once I get back from my study abroad.

Personally whenever I watch an amv and see that it's got subtitles that annoys me, but since it's by popular vote I really don't have that much say in the matter. For the voting period when the entries are posted there's probably going to be a 'Things to keep in mind...' part for determining the winner, and that'll be on there.

Where are you studying at, might I ask? (Just curious. I want to study abroad in the worst way.)
angsty lemon uke: [bff]wabisuke on August 2nd, 2006 10:14 pm (UTC)
Alrightos! I was just wondering since yeah, subtitles annoy the heck out of me too (and I'm the type to do everything in my power to make sure that even if I play the "I ONLY HAVE SUBS" card, that they don't show up) and I was wondering if yeah, there was a "keep these in mind" sort of deal or if it was a free-for-all that lumped the the beginners with the more-experienced, etc without tips, etc.
Mmm...just also a note that yeah, for some of the competitions, the songs should be a bit shorter because my latest video clocked in at 1:30 minutes took about a week and a half...while spending a good six to eight hours a day making sure it flowed the way I wanted it. :3

I'm going to be studying in Paris, France for a semester and I'm totally psyched since I've been wanting this for forever~ ♥. X3

1. Concerning your first song choice,...I assume you understand how arduous and sometimes tedious a process creating AMVs is? I am in hopes you also understand the attention span of the average viewer. I try to go by the rule, "Shorter is good, funny is better, but short and funny is usually best." I'm not saying the videos "have" to be funny, but you get my point.

2. Popular vote is a dangerous thing. You get community members going to their friends begging them to go to this community to vote for their AMV (unless you can see the votes are coming from within this comm). It also doesn't give quality much of a chance as criteria for the "best" video, so I hope the viewers / voters have conscience enough to take that into consideration.

3. Are you planning a compilation of some kind? If so, how will it be distributed? Or is this just a "for the hell of it" competition?

Just curious...

1. Be as it I'm not a AMV maker due to the total lack of resources and inablity to edit to save my life (although I'm decent with a video camera) I hadn't really taken time into account. Albeit I've felt that there is some room in the AMV community for longer videos, and I kind of wanted to start with something a little more challenging.

2. I'm probably going to lock comments to a certain degree to community members only and moderate the votes to the best of my ability. I'm writing guidelines and things to consider when voting checklists for each competetion of course.

3. It's for the hell of it, I hadn't really thought that much ahead.

Kinda-sorta expanding on what dueceloosely said:

I'm working on the challenge song. I expected it to be difficult due to the length, I had no idea just -how- difficult. The intro alone is incredibly long, and when you consider that the average clip can be anywhere from 1/2 a second to 2 seconds long (of you're wanting to time it to the beat of the music), an intro nearly a full minute long by itself makes for some interesting story-boarding. I cringe at what I'll have to do when I reach the instrumental bridge.

Also, in the comm where the challenge is actually posted, you mentioned to keep the lyrics in mind (which should be standard anyway, but that's neither here nor there). I give you kudos because far too many popular songs can only be interpreted one way, or with the attention on one character. Fortunately, this song can be interpreted in a couple of different ways, and I'm aiming for a theme, rather than making it character-centric. For the length of the song, trying to make it character-centric would make it next to impossible to find appropriate clips without repeating, even if that character is Ed.

This isn't meant as a complaint, but more of a con-crit to keep in mind for the future.

As it is, I'm working on the AMV for this challenge and I am definitly finding it quite... challenging. Although, for personal preference, I'm with dueceloosely in that short and funny is best. I like to work with strong beats, fast pace and lyrics (if there are any) that can be interpreted in a number of ways. But then, I had the most fun using the 1812 Overture to blow things up in time to the BOOMS.

....

What? Explosions to music is FUN! XD

Umm, I've never made an AMV. I don't have a program to do it with. But I'm just interrupting to say ICON LOVE. XDD
