Master Icon-theft?
*Is still using this name too*

Ok then, now before I get to the point of this post, I would like to say that I am not trying to cause problems, drama, wank, bashing, what-ever-you-want-to-call-it. Thank you.

Now, I've discovered that on http://fullmetal-alchemist.com , (where there are countless stolen icons, art, ect) most of the avatars are uploaded by someone called bryantq.  This person is also a member of this community and in their user info, states that they are the maintainer of that website. The journal has never been updated, and has existed since 2004. So I've come to the conclusion that this person is the one who has been stealing icons posted in this community, and then posting them on their website without credit. Like this one with art that appears to be hime1999 's and this one with art by, dejichanwasn't it?

May ask what action to take? Some icon-makers may not care, but  I do. I've had one of my icons posted there at least 5 times. It was a personal one marked with my name... =_=;

If anyone finds this unnecessary, offensive, or just that I shouldn't do this, I will delete this post.

*bows*

This has been a constant problem. Ugh. Just looking through their fanart section right now, I found this pic, which I'm fairly certain was done by Rose Nightshade, has been uploaded by bryantq as well. ::grumble:: I know people have tried emailing the webmaster before but I don't know if anything has come of it.

suxors. =_=

The least they could do is say that they didn't make it. :/

Theft of fanart is no laughing matter. My advice? Start a group and boycott the system. Flood their email with letters.

Theft of icons? Well, the images were stolen to begin with. There isn't much you can do.
corbeauaura on May 25th, 2006 11:35 pm (UTC)
Problem is, I don't like being an annoyance... But I think that possibly could be an effective method...

Stolen to begin with? lol good point. XP;
But what about the icons made with fanart? ^^;
fullmetalrosefullmetalrose on May 25th, 2006 11:42 pm (UTC)
If it was my fanart I would be upset. When I use icons, banners, etc. I always credit the creator cause they put alot of work into it. It's a shame but it does happen. It is another form of bootlegging, piracy whatever you want to call it.
corbeauaura on May 26th, 2006 05:25 pm (UTC)
*nodnod* I do the same when I use other people's stuff.
fullmetalrosefullmetalrose on May 26th, 2006 05:38 pm (UTC)
I admit I have downloaded artwork for my own personal files at home. I never post or reuse them. The icons that I have are pics people either made for me or FMA actual pics I made smaller. If I don't know the artist I will say that I am not the artist and if I see the name on the pic will mention the artist. Otherwise if it is their personal site I don't know. You can tell by the different styles of artwork that they are done by more than one artist.
toujin1: gorgeous Akitoujin1 on May 26th, 2006 12:28 am (UTC)
Kick their ass baby. There is nothing more annoying than seeing someone's hard work not getting any credit.
corbeauaura on May 26th, 2006 05:25 pm (UTC)
Lol. But I feel this won't work if it's only me. :/
dejichan on May 26th, 2006 04:27 am (UTC)
*sigh*
pelople tend to think that if they found it online, then it's free for use =_=
I've got that excuse many times myself when asking for reasons of using my art wwithout crediting 9_9

That makes un artist end up "ruining" the pictures by uploading small low quality versions with huge watermarks even if we un like them.
corbeauaura on May 26th, 2006 05:27 pm (UTC)
Never got that excuse, in fact, I've never had any response from people. =_=;

bryantq is the boss of the whole site, I think. He's stolen my avatars before and I can assure you it shits me beyond words.

fm-a.com is a pit of idiocy that needs to be erased from the Interwebs.

But, incidentally? All the other times someone's posted about the problem with that site bryantq hasn't cared. -_-;
corbeauaura on May 26th, 2006 05:28 pm (UTC)
Perhaps the journal is just for watching and taking icons n' stuff. :/

And they don't care what we do.

I don't know what can be done about the website and the art that has already been stolen, but might the mods of this community consider what you say sufficient grounds to ban this person?
corbeauaura on May 26th, 2006 05:28 pm (UTC)
Banage = good. But then will they still be able to see posts that aren't locked?
Solosolo on May 27th, 2006 05:37 am (UTC)
Sure, but then it's up to people to remember to lock their posts. The web is an open medium, and we just have to bear that in mind.
Kyrareikah on May 26th, 2006 08:42 am (UTC)
fm-a is well-known for being a den of illiterate thieves. I very much doubt anybody on that site has uploading anything that they personally drew. Friends have been able to get their art removed, but only after hassling the maintainer over and over again. I think if there is going to be some sort of spamming campaign, it should be to get the site to close its whole gallery section down, not just to get individual images removed.
corbeauaura on May 26th, 2006 05:30 pm (UTC)
True, but if that happened I'd feel like an ass for doing it. It's a website for fans right? Maybe they should make a way to credit the original artists or something. ~_~
fullmetalrosefullmetalrose on May 26th, 2006 05:42 pm (UTC)
well I checked this bryantq's journal and there is nothing on it! The info page states he is the owner of FMA.com and has a hotmail address and icq. Very weird. I just wouldn't post to his site anymore.
The Indomitable Sambruisedgarden on May 26th, 2006 07:02 pm (UTC)
Have people tried to contact him? Or should a group of the artists from here who've been affected by the site contact them and request everything be taken down?

I know it's a huge hassle to deal with art theft on the internet, but unless people starting acting out when it happens, nothing will get done. Much like the Japanese community has built a set of rules around their art to keep people from taking it, other people may need to, too. Most Japanese art upload onto the internet these days comes with a disclaimer and watermarks all over it. It's sad, but that's pretty much what it's come down to. We've all been guilty of using other people's art without credit before, heck, I've still got a picture I made an icon out of that I can't find the artist of.

... Anyway, the best way to get responses is to probably post on theor forums linking to the uploaded stuff on their site with links to your own uploads of it with dates and such and point out the bames on the art or watermarks, etc. I'd be rude enough to call out the Bryant Guy, and just continue posting every time it got deleted. If it comes down to it, contact their webhost as a group and get the site taken down.

That website's always got a lot of stolen stuff on it...if that makes any sense. Pretty much anyone can yoink some fanart and get it up there. It's been talked about before...and I think I see a little something I've done on there too.

I can't find the pics I drew and uploaded there anymore.. ):

Actually that Al icon by Dejichan was only for me, it was a present...
But people never cared, even if you go and tell them "hey, that's not for anyone's usage" they won't remove it. Stupid people... they even got pissed off.
But now I have a Nima one B) ~♥
Zranazrana on May 27th, 2006 11:51 pm (UTC)
Idea! I don't know the effectiveness of it, but possibly the mods could ban this person from the comm?

I really hate how there's people thinking the internet is a free for all to take and repost and ect. -_-###
-teh_jellyness on May 28th, 2006 04:43 am (UTC)
bryantq is the admin..I thought he was anyway...eer...Yeah he's going that ALOT. Others seem to do that too, with icons and art and all. (I make sure I credit my things like avis and sigs). So I dont think its possible to ban bryantq...
