Crossposting as an excuse for research
Alright. The semester is almost over, and like a fool I've procrastinated writing my research term paper until... now. What the heck can I research that I can write a quick paper about?

Well, duh. Anime. I decided that if I write a paper about anime, then I can rewatch Fullmetal Alchemist and call that research. Sweet.

Unfortunately, my brilliant topic had to be narrowed down to anime fan culture in North America. This means that I need to conduct actual research.

Can you all answer these questions for me?

a) Identify whether you're male or female

b) Explain (briefly) why you like anime and manga

c) If you're a girl, explain why you (may or may not) like shounen series

d) If you're a guy, explain why you (may or may not) like shoujo series, if your masculinity isn't greviously offended by admitting it

This is an informal survey and will never see a printer's press-- my sole object in conducting this survey is to pass my writing class. As such, although I may quote your responses in order to make a point in my paper, it will be anonymous and uncredited and only one other person in the world will ever see it. Thank heavens I don't actually want to publish this, or my university would expel my little hiney for being so unacademic.

a) Identify whether you're male or female

- Female, age 22, if needed.

b) Explain (briefly) why you like anime and manga

- It's a whimsical way of seeing the world as compared to the North American view of comics and cartoons. There's more of an "out there" feel to it and more wish fufillment... it can also be more gritty and ackowledge life's problems in a more real way, or even solve them in a very fantastical way, but still endear us.

c) If you're a girl, explain why you (may or may not) like shounen series

I do and I don't. It's obvious when something is out there just to get people to buy it and like some characters. Wether it can have a plot that is engaging and varied is what will draw me in, pretty faces or not. Emotion is usually the main focus in shounen series, and sometimes it isn't handled the way a normal person would. If it's obviously ment to parody real life, then it's generally fine. However, if the characters always react inappropriatley - such as the way the readers would want and not in a logical way, then it gets to be boring and overdone.

I can add more if you like.

b) Explain (briefly) why you like anime and manga: I'm not overall attracted to anime and manga, I'm really more of a comic book person. It's all about the story and characters, not genre.

c) If you're a girl, explain why you (may or may not) like shounen series: I don't go by genre, I go by the story.

b) Anime, as opposed to American cartoons, seems to flow better. In short American Cartoons tend to have a different plotline every episode or even in the same episode. Anime's tend to have one major plot and move it over the entire series(Ed and Al search for a way to get their bodies back), or until said plot is finished in which it moves to a different plot or arc (DBZ, One Piece, other long anime series).\

As for Manga, I believe that in most cases manga tends to be more original than American comics. America seems to be stuck in a 'Superpowered do-gooder beats the bad guys' rut.

c) I don't know if you'd call it shounen but I tend to like the kind of series where you can predict and follow the growing romances. It makes the plotlines that more interesting.

As far as shounen goes, I not much of a fan of the main male characters (i.e. Ed, Inuyasha, Goku, Naruto, Yugi) and tend to look the rival/anti-hero type male character (Roy, Miroku, Vegeta, Kaiba) 'cause they don't always think the main character is right and seem to be better at quipping other characters (to the point of said characters getting humorously mad)

Don't know if it helps any (not to mention it's huge!) but here you go. Gook luck with your paper.

heh, I should be sleeping right now.

b)The story lines. They're all so diverse. They tend to go alot deeper then stuff I've seen over here. Also cartoons over here don't often continue a storyline frome one episode to the next. Also where over here can you find some one who does a cartoon with two guys together. If there is one I haven't seen it.

c)If it's good I'll watch it. Actually I prefer shounen over shoujo. I'm not into lots of fluff. Unless it's a magical girl one. I'm a sucker for those. But really, I like a more action oriented show.

a) I'm female.
b) I like anime because the characters seem so much more realistic and three-dimensional than those of western comics. For manga, it's fun to have art to go along with the story and to actually be able to see what everything looks like.
c) I like shounen series because, well, I like the stories. ^^ Not much to say there.

A) I'm female.

B) To me, anime/manga are forms of entertainment. I find that a lot of anime/manga are more enjoyable than other reality shows and such. Anime/manga also cover a large variety of topics which could range from comedy to death.

C) Shounen series are some of my favorites. I enjoy a good action or adventure story. Those appeal more to me than shoujo series most of the time since I tend to shy away from the romantic or everyday-type stories.

-I like anime because I've practically grown up on it. o.o; I enjoy the plots, the art, and occasionally the devoted fandoms, especially the FMA fandom, mm-hmm. *nods*

-Some shonen series, between panels upon panels of action shots, have pretty good plots. (Like Rurouni Kenshin and Bleach....)

Hope this helps you. ^-^

a) Identify whether you're male or female.
I'm female.
b) Explain (briefly) why you like anime and manga.
The plotlines and character developments in anime/manga are incredibly well done. In the stories there is real depth there... So a regular person like me can become much more attatched and moved by Tohru or Edward then by Dexter or Billy&Mandy.
c) If you're a girl, explain why you (may or may not) like shounen series.
I enjoy the roughness of it... In today's America, there are two stereotypes, girly-girl or manly-girl.... I think shounen manga is an easy way to express that you can accept and appreciate sometimes macho ideas but still want to read something as girly as Peach Girl.

a) Identify whether you're male or female: female

b) Explain (briefly) why you like anime and manga: because they're fun, they always have a deeper meaning and really twisted plots, they're basicly the magical door. and they're way better then books. You only watch animes and mangas are basicly comics, they're fun and easy to understand ^_^ oh, and lets not forget the hot bishi's ;D

c) If you're a girl, explain why you (may or may not) like shounen series: because they're really cool and full of action, WHOOO! I have so much fun watching/reading shounen series! they're the coolest 8) 8)

thats a great idea :D

a) Female
b) Well most cartoons in america are usually reality tv or some cheesy thing i hate, usually making fun of our goverment or being a just plain stupid cartoon with no plot. Needless to say I've never seen a cartoon building up to a main conflict. Every episode is like a mini-story in itself. And it's not that I prefer Japanese stuff over American stuff, it's just that some anime/manga goes into a really deep philosophy and gives you a deep message.
c) I'm failing to notice why no girls wrote OMGCAUSETHENBISHOUNENDUHH!! um, hello? we're all worshipping edward elric on the ground he's drawn on. gotta give that a + for shounen series. Plus the action and stuff, the plot goes into detail very deep and usually gives a strong message.
(oh dear look how much i ranted)

b) I love the art and the amazing stories that anime/manga are able to tell. Combined, they can really draw you in.

c) Heh, I like action-filled stuff, and they tend to have great plots.

b) I like the beautiful bodies and humor between the characters. The plots of the series I like are simplistically good vs. evil, though sometimes the definition of evil is more in the prespective. The anime often has music that is very enjoyable.
c) Hot male bodies. Action. Humor. Did I mention swords?
