Scary Gluttony
All right. I'm sure you've all had the discussions with friends and family...you know the ones, the, "Why DO you watch all those Japanese cartoon anyway?" ones. I was having one with my older brother that focused on the depth of the characters and the level of empathy you can feel with them in some series, and realized something.

There aren't a lot of characters in any fictional genre that genuinely frighten me, and only five that I can think of in anime. Gluttony is probably the second most frightening fictional character I've ever come across. I'm not sure what it is...he just shakes me and makes me want to curl up in an unhappy little ball and cover my ears. Threats involving him always put me more on edge than with any other character, and...well, yeah. He just terrifies me.

Does anyone else feel similarly? Any ideas why Gluttony's so..nightmarish, I guess? What about other characters in FMA that truly frighten you, if not Gluttony?

When I first saw Greed, I thought he frightened me at first...until I saw in later episodes, how incredibly smexy he is. *__*

Anyway, Tucker scares me. Sort of like a creeped out feeling of what he did to Nina and his own wife. O__o

Ooo, yeah, Tucker's on the list too. I'm not sure yet though why he frightens me less than Gluttony...have to keep reading everyone's responses just in case, I guess!

I think Gluttony is cute and would give him a cuddle.

So then who's the MOST frightening fictional character you've ever come across?

........Ditto on the Gluttony impression. :)

I HATE Tucker, he just gives me the heppie jebbies. Good thing Hiromu offed him in the manga.
nintendocat: Busynintendocat on March 24th, 2006 05:32 pm (UTC)
Hopefully. Wouldn't it suck if he just randomly came back?

Actually I kinda want him to come back. He'd say hi then a random clown would hit him with a car. Yeah that'd be nice.

Gluttony only really scared me toward the end, in those last two eps when he was all mindless-eating-zombie. But I agree with most above commentors, Tucker is scary as hell!
Sabrina: BOOM!jupiter_star on March 24th, 2006 11:02 pm (UTC)
Yeah, he was just normal-scary for me until we got near the end of the series. THEN it was like, "Oh no, no, no, DON'T let him on the screen, don't mention him, get him awaaaaay!" and now it happens during the entire series for me ^_^.;;

Well, without spoiling it, I'll say that Gluttony in the later chapters of the manga scares me a whole lot more than Gluttony in the anime/movie. Heheh.

I think people find him scary because of the whole "being eaten" thing. I think the worst possible way to die would be by being eaten by anything, be it bacteria, shark, or Gluttony. That's probably one reason people are scared of him. Know what I mean?
Sabrina: *Smirk*jupiter_star on March 24th, 2006 11:02 pm (UTC)
Hmmm...that IS scary. Very effective built-in threat, ne?

Truthfully, in the anime, I thought Sloth was the worst. DDD: Just the idea of something that looked like your parent had the intent to kill you. Plus the whole "living form of water" thing. But that's just me. >>

However, in the manga, Gluttony is cute and creepy all at the same time. XD I don't know what category to put him in really..
the_pamster on March 24th, 2006 09:28 pm (UTC)
ditto
I was freaked out by her water form, it's just too absurd to think that water could have consciousness but in her case it did apparently. That was creepy in a profound kind of fearful way. I kept wondering how Moofy was able to stay alive when she was 'hugging him' and that wigged me out. I have a paranoid fear of drowning so that is probably why it bothered me so much.

As for Gluttony, the manga one in recent chapters definitely had my hairs raised in fear. That was just surreal the way that was done...The bit with his stomach in the recent manga reminded me of the Steven King movie "Dreamcatcher" *shivers* that scared me big time...
mona_june on March 24th, 2006 06:09 pm (UTC)
I like Gluttony but, when I think "Hey, if he existed and that we met...Ew!" Well, he would eat me for sure, and that creeps me out. Of course, he's like a child, he doesn't really realize, but that's even more frightening. I'm a big fan of Envy also, but we can't say he would have second thoughts about killing me, or any other humans for that matter, maybe even in a horrible way. I mean, there's a lot of pshycos like that in the world, unfortunatly.

Oh, and let's not forget Tucker...
Sabrina: Baaaaaby penguin!jupiter_star on March 24th, 2006 11:05 pm (UTC)
THAT'S it! It's the almost-mindless/not realizing exactly what he's doing thing! When something knows exactly what it's doing and still does it, normally that's scarier to me, but with FMA you can fathom the minds of these sorts of characters and could possibly use that to get away, but...Gluttony's kind of an unstoppable force and there IS no way to use what you know of him against him because he ISN'T aware and I'm pretty sure this has ceased to make as much sense to anyone else as it does to me but...eek!
haylerzz: Al chibihaylerzz on March 24th, 2006 06:14 pm (UTC)
I'm going to agree with a lot of the people here and say that chimera Tucker definatly scares me more then Gluttony. He's all half naked and furry and upside down and just *twitch*. Also, I kept thinking he was dead and then he kept showing up again in random places. 0.0

Actually, Armstrong scares me too! ^_^; He's not really a scary character...at all, but everytime he'd whip his shirt off I'd be like, "Oh my god! His forearm is bigger around then my waist!"
jalendavi_lady: Writer at Workjalendavi_lady on March 24th, 2006 06:25 pm (UTC)
Basque Gran. Quite honestly, there are only a very few scenes in the entire anime that include Gran that I can stand to watch, all of them in episode 15 (although I can mostly ignore him when he's off on the sidelines in a scene). I will fast forward through his appearance if I've recorded the episode and look away if I'm watching during a TV showing. Even in the few scenes I can stand, he gives me the complete and total creeps.
Emmagretchen8642 on March 24th, 2006 06:39 pm (UTC)
i have to agree with you actually. gluttony freaks me out. there's something about a being that only wants to eat things, like living or dead or whatever, that's totally messed up. the way he asks permission before tearing apart someone, the way he grins right before he attacks... ugh.

he's not the scariest though. not on fma. envy's the one who scares me the most (i think it was that thing with hughes)

envy's just so remorseless and terrible. he kills with no reason and no regrets alllll the time. not to mention he's a manipulative asshole who's behind so many terrible things in the anime... (like the ishbal war, the fossil disease, blah blah.)

they just seem so inhuman to me... envy and gluttony. blegh.
Kao-chankao_sama on March 24th, 2006 06:58 pm (UTC)
I honestly don't see Gluttony as a conscious being so he doesn't really scare me XD I feel Dante and Hohenheim are scarier, they did such awful things just to live longer and you don't really know what ._.
Am I the good one now?vampslayer04 on March 24th, 2006 07:58 pm (UTC)
Not Gluttony so much, although the eating people thing gives me the shivers. I actually agree with what several people above me said, that Tucker is hands down the creepiest character, because it's hard for me to imagine that someone could be so heartless to his own family, especially Nina, cause she was so cute and adorable. I think he bothers me more than the homunculi because he was human when he did those things.

Envy bothers me too, mostly because of Hughes. :( Actually, the entire fandom, imo, is more traumatized by that (and Nina) then anything else. Seriously, I've seen it happen like this: Someone makes a post and says "Anime ep 25." Coummunity reponse: "*sob* Hughes!!! *more sobbing*" Sweeping generalization there, of course.

I've only ever seen the anime, but I'm going to borrow the first two volumes of the manga from my roommate at some point. I did buy them for her before I became a fan. *laughs*

I love Gluttony. He's like a giant teddy bear.

...Just...I wouldn't HUG him.

Tucker kinda scares me. He's kinda like the boogeyman of the fandom; he killed his own family and... laughed about it (basically)!
fizzko on March 24th, 2006 08:11 pm (UTC)
Heh...there are lots of creepy people in FMA. So much to choose from! XD
Movie!Gluttony was really, really scary for me. Tucker creeps me out and I wish he'd have gotten hit by a bus. I find Sloth...I don't know. She just makes me shudder.

Envy...I have not so much a fondness for Envy as I do a curiosity. I don't like him, I'll never forgive him for Hughes, and he terrifies me--just the thought that he could be anyone and I wouldn't even know terrifies me. But he's fascinating, to me at least.

However, for me, the scariest "character" in the anime is the Gate. And those damn Gate babies. I've had nightmares about the Gate.
twinkie_dtwinkie_d on March 24th, 2006 09:41 pm (UTC)
My roommate was so afraid of the Gate babies that she didn't want to watch any more of FMA!...until I screened all of the episodes for her and gave her the okay :P
