First time post, yeah, hey, whatever.  I come bearing no gifts, but rather a short (anime) plothole/rant thats been on my mind for quite some time.  My apologies in advance if this has been discussed before, there's like 8 kajillion posts to have to look though, and in realatisic terms, that just aint gonna happen.

The subject of Ed's height is a bit bothersome to me.  And no, I'm not really talking in terms of his lack of it.  Not in a bad way, anyway.

We all know the poor boy is 4'11 (and for reference, so am I).  In episode 17, it's implied he hasn't really grown at all since he'd left home...4 years prior.  That's a pretty long time spent not really growing (I sympathise, I had the same problem).  Not to mention it seems he's ALWAYS had a height problem.  But there inlies the problem thats bugging me...

Now, for a little personal relevance.  When I was 10 years old, I was the shortest person in my class, standing a mere 4 feet tall.  The tallest person was a gil, who stood a gigantic 5 feet.  Everyone else was somewhere in between, around the middle or so.

Lets not forget the little fact that girls tend to grow and mature at a younger age than boys do.  So it comes no shock to me the class giant was a female.

Now, getting back to our loveable Ed.  For him to have barely grown in 4 years, and still be nearly 5 feet, he HAD to have been a pretty tall 11 year old.  Even if he grew say, 2 inches in that time, I don't know about you, but I sure as hell didn't know any 11 year old boys being quite THAT tall.  Certainly wouldn't be the class giant, but certainly NOT a shrimp either.

For Ed to have stayed a shrimp all that time, he'd either have to be much shorter than he is, or been shorter back then and grown a bit.  Either way, thats a bit of a plothole, wouldn't you say?

Now, I'm certainly not poking fun at his height by any means.  I can totally relate to his height issues, being a full grown 22 year old female who only crosses the 5 foot mark WITH shoes on.  When I was very young, I suddenly stopped growing for 3 years.  Went to doctors for years, had tests done, and no answer was ever found.  It had NOTHING to do with the fact that I, like Ed, HATE Milk.

Personally, I don't have a problem with being short, I always have been (I was against the whole doctors visits to find out why.  Sure, I wanted to know, and sure, it would be nice to be taller, but being short is who I am, and I've always accepted that).  Yeah, it's inconvenient at times, and I have short arms and the hands of a 10 year old, which does tend to suck.

The problem I have with is when OTHER people mention it.  Yeah, I sometimes make fun of my own height, and I know the comments and jokes about it will never cease.  But geez, for the love of whatever diety there is, people need to shut the hell up about it all the time.  I don't need it pointed out to me every 5 minutes.  I KNOW.  I'm the one LIVING in this body.  I know I look like I'm 15.  Get the hell over it.  So I'm short.  So you're not.  What difference does it make, unless it requires getting something off a high shelf with a lack of a stool?  Conversely, I can fit into smaller places and get things out of tight spots when others can't.  Unless height is DIRECTLY related to the task at hand (and 99% of the time, it isn't), my height (or lack thereof) is no ones buisness to butt into.  It does not affect my ability to think and act like a repecful human being with common sense and intelligence.

So yes, I can VERY much relate to how much Ed gets pissed off when people point out that he's vertically challenged.

Don't insult the short people.  One day, they may come back to kick your ass.  Especially Ed.  We all know he's damn good at ass-kicking (and he'd got the bod to prove it).

So yeah. I'll shut up now.  Questions/comments/concerns/etc.?

I totally agree on the opposite end!

I'm 5'9" barefoot and a space over 6 ft in my favorite Via Spigas, but don't you DARE call me a big girl. I'm tall, yes. You can call me an Amazon even...(I've seen taller people) minus the whole one breast thing. You may even marvel that my feet aren't big for my height. 8 narrow) I'm also into lithe and willowy. When I was really into being skinny I would get asked if I modeled, but this was in Los Angeles and I was getting dinner... a fat free latte. Glad I don't live there anymore.

Since I'm usually dead in the middle of the healthy range, but normally on the low end (left to my own devices I'd be/have been underweight but that is just icky looking really on me.) I'm definitely NOT big. I work in retail right now and people are surprised when I say what size jeans I wear because I don't look "that big". Hello, the size I wear isn't "that big" when you consider the size of the average American woman.

Oh well. We are ALL Me Sized. (Though I do like being guessed at a size 4!)

I am about 5'4 and my sister alwasy feels the need to bring up that she is taller than me an it pisses me off to so I can feel Ed's pain about the height thing. I have seen a lot of people shorter than me though so I know I am not alone. My cousin is 21 and 4'10 and her parents treat her like she is 15 but she is a grown woman and they should treat her as such. As for Ed they have had to make adjustments to his automail so I am guessing he is taller than 4'11 by the end of the series. I though guys grew until they were 20 or so and he is what 17 at the end of the series so he will be ok.

Being in the vague area known as The Very Low End of Average, I get a lot of short comments, too. :| I think it's just a super tiny plothole, or maybe he just grew a teeny tiny bit and people like to be mean to him? XD Anyway, I know how you and Ed both feel. :< All my friends are upwards of 5'6" (with only three exceptions, and we make a point not to stand together in fear of a SUPREME INSULT BLIZZARD), and a few of them are very fond of the nickname Shrimpzilla. 8| After awhile it's just not funny anymore. I'm pretty laid back, but I flip out if a friend does it too many times. D<

Me: Wow, wouldn't it be awkward if the guy you were dating was SHORTER than you?
Friend: Oh, I don't think you have to worry about that. ;D

Friend: Hey! Come help me get this book down from the shelf-- Oh. Nevermind. >D

I'm 5 feet 3/4 of a inch (damn that nurse) and at my adult height. I'm actually the exact opposite of Ed in my reaction (if Al were short, maybe) in that I just laugh at it. I even had a laugh today with a girl about 3 years younger who was only a few inches shorter about being cast as a hobbit in the school play.
I'm starting to wonder though, has Ed fully gone through puberty? It could be that he hasn't had a growth spurt yet and is just waiting for it to happen? Hmmm? I have a feeling that if he hasn't grown in 4 years, then he hasn't had a growth spurt because boys do that later than girls.

Shrimp power!

Ed hasn't grown because of Al. I guess the anime didn't explain that part.

Al, that leech. :X
Rekall: fma_edrekallthegreat on March 18th, 2006 05:17 am (UTC)
hehe, I bet the real reason Ed wants Al's body back so badly is so that he can start growing again. :P

Was that ever confirmed? I mean... The whole 'Ed sharing height, weight, health, etc. with Al's body' thing. I was under the impression that it was still Ed's theory.
Rekall: fma_edrekallthegreat on March 18th, 2006 05:30 am (UTC)
I don't think it was officially confirmed but it's the best logical theory. Al's body is surviving somehow and it's not roting away like Barry's.
Jekkaseraphwings on March 18th, 2006 07:06 am (UTC)
It's also theorized by the automail mechanic in Rush Valley that its the weight of the automail limbs that's keeping Ed from growing taller. He seems to think a lighter alloy might help alleviate the problem. It never actually gets done, though.
Rekall: fma_edrekallthegreat on March 18th, 2006 07:24 am (UTC)
That explanation always did confuse me; especially since he did grow a few inches in-between the time he got the automail and when he had to get it fixed after the Scar incident in East City. Plus there's the fact that Bunny had two automail legs and no problems growing.
catzslave: Irritatedcatzslave on March 18th, 2006 04:55 am (UTC)
Standing at 5 feet in my sock feet, I don't mind being short too much. (I never ask for help to reach things I just find different ways around high reach problems, much to my taller family/co-workers/friends amusement.) I have been known to snap occationally though when my 12 yr old daughter likes to point out she is nearly my height.
Kimnefadol on March 18th, 2006 05:02 am (UTC)
I think it's mainly just an anime plothole. It's never implied in the manga that they never went back to Resembool after burning their house, it's shown that they came back several times in the 'Simple People' gaiden. So, I'm pretty sure that he's grown (manga at least).

Ahahaha. I feel yer pain. TRUST me. I'm 4'11" exactly myself. It doesn't really make me angry though. I'm use to my friends constantly teasinf me about my vertically challenged state. My problem is that everyone assumes I'm really young because of my height. That's what annoys me the most. Other than that I can deal with it.

I drink milk all the time. I love it. I'm still really short. LIES! They all LIED to me!
umi_mikazukiumi_mikazuki on March 18th, 2006 04:33 pm (UTC)
I'm 5'1", and I drink milk all the time too.

The weird thing about me though, is that people always think I'm in 9th grade or that I'm old enough to have teenage kids; there's no inbetween usually. o___O
kumiko_kun on March 18th, 2006 05:48 am (UTC)
I'm 5'8, and until seventh grade I was the tallest person in my class. People would always assume I was far older than what I actually was. I hate milk. Go figure.
nightfireblazenightfireblaze on March 18th, 2006 06:32 am (UTC)
In the beginging (when Ed was around 11-12) wasn't Ed a bit above Mustang's waste? He is at Mustang's shoulder now so he has grown if my eyes don't deceive me.
Being tall is nice (I'm 5'7") but it was a shock when guys were finally taller than me.

I think the installation of the automail theory is completely wrong. I mean look at Bunny, she got automail legs when she was younger than Ed and she had no problems growing. I think it was just a theory that the other characters came up with to explain Ed's lack of height because it wasn't until pretty recently when they confirmed that Al's body was elsewhere.

As for Ed's height, he's definitely short for his age since Ling is the same age as him but is much taller (hehe, I love it when Ed start spazzing on the train when he finds out they're the same age).
nix_357 on March 18th, 2006 11:22 am (UTC)
manga theories
I think both theories are plausible, but also probably in effect :)

The automail issue wouldn't have to do with his leg at all (why Bunny is fine), but with the weight of the arm.
Basically his body may have been growing thicker and wider to support it, more so than otherwise, instead of growing taller. Winry's noticed the change, but that is not a confirmation of the theory :)

And the other theory was given alot of proof towards that being true in recent chapters. My money's on both applying- perhaps Ed would be taller by now if only one of them had been in effect.

That's just one page but she's called Bunny throughout it.

hehe, short ppl rock *g*. Nah, really what's it in society about size? Size apparently determines how people treat one and how old they think one is. I'm also only 161cm and except for 1, all my friends are taller. I do have a pretty young and kinda round face (that's just my bone structure), but so do other with the exception that they're taller and so everyone, who doesn't know my true age (21), thinks I'm 15 or even younger and treat me like "aww, little girl"! WTF?!?!
And I too have small hands (gah can't play some piano-pieces) and short arms (hehe, anyone know "Bern das Brot" who always says "I got too short arms!"? there's him :(.
I used to be one of the quite normally sized ppl in my class, even taller than some of my friends who now outgrew me, so I think that doesn't have to be a plothole.
My mum says I stayed up too long at night, but so did my mega-tall friends, so *shrugs*.
(has to be horrible to hate milk, it's in so many yummy things ;))

Yeah, I'm 5'2, and thus on the short end of the scale too. I enjoy it. (SAP: Short And Proud!_

When did they say that he hasn't grown for four years? I don't remember ever seeing/hearing that....

*giggles* That last paragraph reminds me of "Little People" from "Les Miserables" (lyrics here, just Gavoche's bit at the top...). Then again, that song in general reminds me of Ed... ^^;;;;;
The Infinite Blueinfinitesimi on March 18th, 2006 07:55 pm (UTC)
somewhere, not sure where or whether or not it was ever actually prove, i remember reading that the height chart, where ed is shown as being roughly 4'11", is from when he is fifteen, but at twelve he was only 4'6", so he has grown since then, and he has always been on the short side.

another explanation is, that maybe when he was twelve he was only slightly shorter than average (i think 4'11" is still on the short end of things at twelve. im pretty short myself and i was taller than that when i was twelve) for his age but still much shorter than adults, which were all he was around, basically. well, an Al, and Al's about seven feet tall or so. so if people called him "little" they were right, he was little compared to an adult (sorry ed!). then, as he got older, he never grew, whether or not it was an effect of having automail installed when he was so young or it was because all his "growth energy" was going to Al's body in the gate i dont know.
takarifreaktakarifreak on March 19th, 2006 03:23 am (UTC)
If he really was that short before hand, yeah, that would make MUCH more sense...but from what is phsically seen from the episode, there is BARELY a difference, which is what raised the question in the first place.

I feel your pain. I'm 5 1/2 in heeled boots! D:
I drink a lot of milk, because I like it. I have always been at least three inches shorter than my peers, throughout all of school, so it's plausible that could happen to Ed too. I'm not one-hundered percent sure because of him being a guy. But you know what? It doesn't matter. He still kicks mighty ass as a character.
// y ~ u ~ k ~ o ~  //prides_tears on March 23rd, 2006 03:19 am (UTC)

But anyhow...
