The name game.

How do you write Ed's name?

Ed, duh. That's how it's supposed to be.

Edo~ It's cuter this way!
61(18.5%)

I honestly don't get the reasoning behind "Edo." Sure, that's the way the Japanese pronounce it, but that's just it. A pronunciation. His name is Edward, which would lead one to believe that it would be condenced to Ed. Just Ed. There is no o in his name.

If anyone can please explain to me the reason why so many people call the poor boy Edo, I would appreciate it.

I think "Edo" is simply how the Japanese pronounce "Ed", and, well, people yoinked it. ;P

Yes, I'm sure that's what it is, but I really don't understand why people would want to do that. o.o It makes them sound stupid to be perfectly honest. ^^;; Of course, that's just my opinion.

It's Ed. I don't insist upon everyone calling me "Debedo," because it'd be stupid. Same with Al. It's Al.

Ticky box!

Ahem. His name is Ed. If I'm in a way, WAY too cute mood, I'll call him Edo, but other than that, I call him by his name. Ed.
broken_melodie on March 16th, 2006 08:47 pm (UTC)
THe Japanese tried to get as close to the word/name "Ed" as they can. I call him "Ed" because that's what they meant.

I call him Ed. Edo is cute sometimes, but can get as annoying as "KAWAII~" and "DESHOO, DESHOO NE?!" after a while.
The Glass Swordsannask on March 16th, 2006 10:19 pm (UTC)
so here's food for thought. why does 'DESHOU, DESHOU NE?!" look less annoying than "DESHOO, DESHOO NE?!"

*ponders... but cannot come up with an answer.*

かわいそうでうすね。

*wonders if that's the phrase she's looking for anyway* how did i take four semesters of japanese and still come out not able to say the simple things i want to say : x

Hee. I just realized this reminds me of playing with Babel Fish where you type a word in one language, translate it to another, then translate it back again and see how close or far off you are from the original, except with, y'know, accents. =P

It's just a pronunciation. Just some examples (Please excuse if the spelling of how to pronounce Envy and Bradley are off. I'm just going by how they sound):

Edwardo = Edward
Edo = Ed
Aruphonse = Alphonse
Aru = Al
Greedo = Greed
Lusto = Lust
Enbi = Envy
Bloodarey = Bradley

Hum, I, too, don't get what's with the all "Edo" thing. Are people so shameful of being english-speakers and so sad of not being asian that they feel the need to put in their fanfics the word "kawaii" or "ne?" in every phrase?

I say, just chose one language: English or Japanese. But everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Well, I think this is obvious that I prefer "Ed".
cruelangelsenvy on March 16th, 2006 08:59 pm (UTC)
I use Ed, Edo and Edward. It gives variety when writing fiction and RPing.

I think "Edo" dosen't bother me because I watched the entire series fansubbed, so that's the name that I'm actually used to hearing.

I call him `Edward`, `Ed`, and `Edo`, depending on my mood, I guess. Though, mostly when I'm RPing I tend to keep it to `Edward` and `Ed`.

My boyfriend's name is Edward though, and I find `Edo` easier to slip off my tongue than `Ed`. But that's just me. :x

I have a coworker named Edward. We call him Eddie, or when we're being silly, Edwardo. Or Grady when we're trying to press our luck, since he hates that name.
Kat~♪: {Ed} The.Sinnersome_kat on March 16th, 2006 09:18 pm (UTC)
I generally use "Ed" rather than "Edo". I mean, Amestris is a pseudo-Europe/Germany, so I'd rather use that pronunciation. From time to time, "Edo" is cute, though. Really, it's all just a matter of interpretation and preference.
