Just an anime question...

A question, with the answer possibly to be used for evil purposes...

Okay, you know the flashback where the alchemists were in Ishvar, and the red stones are pulled out? Did any of the alchemists (Roy, specifically) know what they were before this point? Or were they oblivious? Was it specified either way, or can we make up our own minds?

I think they knew what the red stones were, just not what they were created from.

Well, obviously the Crystal and Iron-Blood alchemists knew what they were, as Marcoh had made them under Grand's supervision.

As for the others, I think creepy_sadako is right: they knew that the red stones were imperfect Philosopher's Stones, but they didn't know the details of the 5th 5th Laboratory research (although in one of the later Season 2 episodes, Ed does hint that Roy may have known more than he lets on, and the Flame Alchemist neither comfirms nor denies the accusation.)

It seems that the properties of red stone are reasonably well known to the top alchemists, as others (such as both generations of Tringhams) are involved in the similar research, red water poisoning is a known malady, even a non-alchemist like Archer knew the red stones' usefulness when combined with the State Alchemists' watches, etc.

Any additional information Roy had likely came directly from Marcoh. Given the stuff mentioned in Ep 49, it seems Marcoh didn't keep his mouth shut about how to make stones once he trusted a fellow alchemist.
