ZOOOOOM! (Riza 57 Spoilers)
Whoa, I was on the FMA MSNgroups message boards and I found a post done by 1【★ωϊnяφяǿckbεll【★】¤1 (or something close to that) and they had a close up shot of Riza's back.

If you look, you'll see that at the bottom of the DNA looking things, that they are actually dragons. But they are not eating their tails, so she's not a homunculus. The crazy theory I posted about Riza being a key to gate doesn't seem so crazy anymore.

Thoughts?

*crawls out of her little hole in the wall*.

REF: http://www.polenth.demon.co.uk/myth/alchemy.html (and varying other sites)

Nagayuna
Nagayuna is the Indian branch of alchemy. The aim is to preserve the elixir of life, in order to unify the body's energies. The symbol of the naga (two entwined serpents) is used to represent the link between the earth and the heavens, and the transition from the lower levels to the higher. This symbol can be found outside temples, on stone tablets (called 'nagahals' or 'nagakals')

of course, if you want to include that center piece as a "rod", then it gets interpreted differently:

Caduceus
The caduceus consists of two serpents entwined around a central rod. It is the symbol of Mercury. This symbol was developed from the myth of Mercury, the messenger of the gods, who intervened in a fight between two serpents. When he intervened, the serpents twined around his wand. In Greek times, the caduceus sometime had wings, to symbolize the volatility of mercury. Alchemists also call mercury chaotic water, abysmal water, sylvery water, and Philosophical Basilisk.

Philosophic Mercury is sometimes represented by a serpent, or winged dragon.

And....

it says in chapter 53 that the two dragons twining together are a symbol for "perfection" - both male and female. However, the symbol on Riza's back (as far as I can tell) doesn't show two dragons/snakes of differing genders - they look identical to me. Also, according to that chapter, the sun is the symbol for the soul (moon for mind, stone for body) and the two intwining dragons upside down symbolized "throwing God to Earth".

So, what is on Riza's back?

The Sun.
Two snakes/dragons intertwining, crowned.
--possibly around a "rod" that has spots on either end. Rod could possibly be "stone" - body.
----there are two rods, in the shape of a cross (or plus sign). The fire circle overlaps the center.
--the dragons are upside down.
Alchemical circle for fire.
A bunch of words impossible to read from the image given, circling the fire circle and filling in the gaps with the snakes.
Injuries distorting the circle.

While there is a sun and a possible "stone", there is no moon, which leads to my belief that this is not a circle for human transmutation - possible soul/body transmutation, but not human transmutation, as there is no "mind" factor included.

Sorry this comment is so long! *runs and hides*

Wow, that's amazing. Riza is definitly more important to the plot in the manga than she was in the anime, that's for sure.

*ponders new theory*

What if Father's plan is to transfer the soul of someone into a living body. That would make sense with the last part.
The Freak_shinchansgirl_ on March 12th, 2006 02:35 am (UTC)
which would also somewhat "echo" what was done in the anime, no? I'm not sure. I had a half-thought out theory last night, something about her being part of the sacrifices - specifically Roy's, since she has the flame circle - but now I can't remember half of what I was thinking -_- I feel so ashamed. I still have this from where I was looking at it, though.

Oh, and I also remember seeing somewhere a different oborous (however you spell it - so not into looking right now) symbol - two dragons biting each others tail. One winged with a crown, the other without a crown or wings. In each "corner" (since it was drawn on paper) there was a symbol for one of the following: water, fire...and gosh darn it I can't remember the other two. I'll look again and see if I can't find that same site.

Yes, I've posted a list of theories of what Wrath is planning to do with Riza earlier and one of them was 'use her as a sacrifice'. Though I doubt Wrath could force Roy to use her to anything if it risks her life.
The Freak_shinchansgirl_ on March 12th, 2006 03:03 am (UTC)
true - I was thinking more along the lines of "didn't have a choice" (as in using her as a sacrifice or as part of something else), but you have a point.

Sorry! ^^;
I'm a bit of a grammar nazi, so I have to fix your punctuation. Sorry if I offend you! There should be a question mark at the end of your first sentance. (God, I'm a nerd.)

She seems to be, but maybe not - the circle is messed up because of those burns, remember. It could be that she was important to the sins' plans, but now that she's "damaged", she's not.

And theories kinda depend on how you interpret it. I don't think the cross is meant to be the "rod" for the two snakes, but it could be. *shrugs*. theories may also change depending on if you take those two serpents as dragons or crowned snakes.

Ah, yes the scars do mess up the circle. However, couldn't someone patch up the missings parts by painting over the scars. Heck with Father's uber powers he might be able to heal the scars instantly. Much to ponder. Much to ponder.

Too true.

Sorry! ^^;
I'm sorry, but I'm a bit of a Grammar Nazi, so I must correct your punctuation:
1. In your sentance "However, couldn't someone patch up the missings parts by painting over the scars", there is supposed to be a question mark as the end of the sentance, not a period.
2. In your sentance "Heck with Father's uber powers he might be able to heal the scars instantly", there should be a comma between the words Heck and with, or, depending on how you meant to say it, a comma between powers and he.
Sorry if I offended you, I just randomly correct grammar and the like.

It looks more like a cross.

BTW, on each end of the cross, there's a set of points...each end has a different pattern design with 5 points. (mind the underscores)

Top - 5 points
Right- 5 points
Bottom-
The bottom looks like it has 6...but one of the points looks like an inking error...(but I doubt that Arakawa's assisstants did that)

I'm getting this nagging feeling I've seen the original parchment/painting with this exact array, if you will, on it....

Long comments=good. Especially when it pertains to Hagaren XD;
The Freak: fei; feeling good_shinchansgirl_ on March 12th, 2006 03:27 am (UTC)
I'm looking, but I can't find much on it with what I have. I agree that it looks more like a cross, I was simply saying that it *could* be a rod the snakes/dragons twine around.

I'm looking for the point pattern, but it's taking some time to find it - if I can find it at all. I didn't bother looking last night, but now I'm curious.

I know what you mean - it looks horribly familiar to me, and I can't for the life of me figure out why. I know where I've seen the flame circle before, and now the snakes, but there's still something that I feel like I missing...

I don't comment much, so I'm kinda wary of making long comments - I feel like, if it takes that long to explain it, I *must* be missing something somewhere...
