Correspondence of Sins

I've been recently reading some works by the Buddist thinker Pema Chorodon and Thoughts Without a Thinker, a book on psychotherapy and Buddhism. Some things got me thinking on our favorite sins.

In Buddist thoughts there are eight worldly principles/snares (Love of Praise, Fear of Ridicule, Love of Gain, Fear of Loss, Love of Pleasure, Fear of Pain, Love of Fame, Fear of Disgrace). These reminded me of the Seven Deadly sins, so I got thinking - what else may correspond to FMA's Seven Sins characters.

So I got a bit experimental . . .

I corresponded the characters (not quite the sins themselves) to varoius mystical or philosophical "sevens" below. Then I got a bit more creative and looked at a few other systems of mystical/metaphysical thoughts. The original Worldly Ways are at the end. I present this as the results of an interesting exercise - and to see if it inspires anything in the fertile imaginations here.

I used the Three Books of Occult Philosophy and the Magicians Companion and the ever-reliable internet.

NOTES:

  • COLORS: The colors were surprisingly easy to do. Green Envy, Yellow (Gold) for Greed, Blue for the sad Lust, Purple for Royal Pride, Red for angry Wrath, earthy orange for Gluttony, and Indigo for watery Sloth.
  • ELEMENTS, CHINESE: These are pretty difficult to map, so I did the best I could.
  • PLANETS:The western planets also lined up really well. The oddest one is Saturn, but as the Saturn of legend also ate his children, and Gluttony is quite old, it seemed to fit.
  • TRIGRAMS: I attempted to use one of each - which fit very well. I left out "Heaven." I attributed Mountain to Pride due to his observational powers.
  • WORLDLY SNARES: Adapted easily. I assigned "Love of Praise" to Envy for his parental issues. "Fear of Pain" to Wrath for his anger and desire for comfort. "Fear of Blame" to Sloth as she seemed to not cope well with her past. Greed, of course, was the easiest.
