FMA MOVIE Question.

I need to know how did they open the gate from "the Real world" to the Alcheny world? Was there a theory? If so what was it? What happened to Envy? Was his soul destoryed? Why did they need Hoho and Envy? And did they explain why Ed was able to active the circle with his blood?

Danil_envyxedward_l on January 2nd, 2006 06:25 pm (UTC)
I'm not sure if they re-opened it, I think from the point where they came through, it never closed so that all the air ships could raid in. So yeah, I think it never closed and that's how they got back.

As for Envy, I know he was used for that transmutation, so I think he was the sacrafice used to get to Amestris or as they know it, Shambala. I don't know if Hoho papa was part of that sacrafice too or not : /

I don't know if it was his blood that activated the circle. I think it activated because he was once an alchemist in Amestris, and that was why Dietlinde was so interested in him. This last part could be wrong; hopefully you find a 100% for sure answer.

I'm pretty sure about most of them, so yeah. That's what I got ^^;;

As far as I can tell, this is what happened:

1) The Thule group were able to recreate -- supposedly with Hoho's help -- the array needed to open up the gate. However, it didn't work both ways, so they were at a bit of a loss. (I believe they were able to send things through the gate to Amestris, but not open up the gate itself. Or something like that.) Then Ed showed up, saw the array and fixed it (cos it was incomplete.) He activated it with his blood (accidentally) and opened the gate up to bring back the suits of armor that had been sent through initially.

2) They never clearly state why Ed needed his blood to activate the circle, but it was shown on two occasions (one with Ed and one with Hoho) to be true, so assumably, the arrays can't be activated unless you have the blood of someone from Ed's world. Also, I believe, the gate itself cannot be opened to allow safe travel unless both sides are activated (when Ed was able to go through, it was because Hoho's blood activated his side and Al activated the other side.)

3) Envy died -- he changed into a giant snake at the end of the series, going through the gate, and apparently, he was stuck in that form over in our world. He attacked Ed, and because he came out of hiding, the Thule Company captured him. He was appeased, however, because they let him kill Hoho, which is what he wanted in the first place. I'm not certain if he necessarily died or not, but I think his body was destroyed when the gate was opened. (And humonculi don't have souls (in the anime, at least), so that should leave him fairly well dead, I'd imagine.)

However, at the end of the movie, Ed and Al destroy the array on their side of the gate, while Roy destroys the one on his side. Presumably, this could mean that those were the only arrays capable of opening the gate to allow travel, but not necessarily.

I hoped that helped! And if I said anything blatantly incorrect, just say so. ^_^;;

Re: Thanks!
You mean Noa's psychic powers? I don't think they explained why for that, though it could just be something that's unique to Noa. I'm not sure -- it fits with her character, as she is alter!Rose and Rose is a very spiritual person, so presumably they both have strong mental abilities.

Oh, and just to establish the specifics on how they opened the gate the second time: Envy, in his giant snake form, bit through Hoho and killed him, spraying Hoho's blood down onto the array. That's how Envy was involved in the process. ^_^; I wasn't sure if that was clear or not.

Re: Thanks!
Ok, sounds interesting to me. Thank you again. Ny chance, doyou know anything about the redwater. It's toxic, they show that in the Russel/Fletcher eps, how does Ed survive it in the end, or do they igore the fact he drank it for the movies?

Re: Thanks!
Wait, when did Ed drink Red water?
Tiny Destroyer of Humankind: Edo!Spaz Attacksquirrelarmy on January 2nd, 2006 07:08 pm (UTC)
Re: Thanks!
I don't recall Ed ever drinking red water -- what episode is that in? The closest Ed came was when he was exposed to red water in Lab 5, after Lust threatened to kill Al unless Ed transmuted the stone. And there, he stepped in red water and it increased his powers significantly from exposure, but he was never directly exposed to it (cos he had his shoes on; the red water never touched his skin, though it still caused a reaction.)

And he survives the affect of the red water because Ross comes and anchors his mind back to her, so he wasn't so taken with the water. I never quite understood that, myself, but Ross hugged Ed and the effect of the exposure stopped, so I suppose that Ed was strong enough to pull himself away from the affects, so long as he had an anchor point. And I assume that Ross just avoided touching the red water herself. ....or something like that. ^_^;;

Is that what you were talking about? Or is it something else that I forgot?

Re: Thanks!
I think that's it. I've seen only the begining of the series, and only read spoilers to write this fic. So it makes sense to me. I don;t have access to copies of FMA save for hte DVDs coming out and I've only seen up to ep24

Re: Thanks!
I can send you links to the entire series for download if you have BitTorrent, though it's subbed. I don't think I should here, though, cos I don't think this post is Friends-Locked. And I think I have the link for the movie around as well, if you need it. ^_^

Unfortunately, I have a mac, and it is fussy about most programs. I could get my friend Bluerose to down load the movie for me. It's shorteer than the series...

As for Envy just dissappearing, I don't think that's completely true. When you see what happens to Wrath, it looks as though the undead homunculus persona still exists. It seems he rejoins his other side; his humanity, and enters the gate to remain with Izumi's soul.

If that's the case, it seems really nice then; It would mean that Lust, for example, could rejoin her old persona and become complete in mind and spirit, and live in whatever afterlife exists with Scar and his brother.

I'm guessing it's just because they were the ONLY things actually from "Shambala".

In addition to this, however, is the fact that without an additional sacrifice, one cannot pass safely through the gate and go to Amestris. I don't know if this plays into what you are planning on writing, but it is something to consider. Dietline did not pay this additional sacrifice; therefore, when she tried to pass through, she was parasitized, for lack of a better word. Ed had a sacifice paid for him (though I won't go into detail on this because I don't know what sort of spoilers you want or already know) and so he was able to pass through safely. Or at least, that's how it appears. They were pretty unclear on the mechanics of all of this in the movie, as you can probably tell.
redrose999redrose999 on January 2nd, 2006 08:33 pm (UTC)
That is what I thought. What kind of sacrifice? Soul wise?

I thought Dietline sacrificed both Hoho and Envy? She couldn't pass thought, but Ed and Al did, interesting... Was it Al's memory loss that allowed them to pass?

I actually like plot holes they're fun to play with.

Thank you very much!
Bluetardshichahn on January 2nd, 2006 09:03 pm (UTC)
Hohenheim and Envy were used to open the gate, but you can't pass through the gate without paying a toll. A character sacrificed his life to send Ed back home, allowing him to return to Amestris. Dietlinde was able to pass through, but she was not unchanged. The gatebabies attached themselves to her and started to take her over, or something. Al's memory was sacrificed in order to allow Ed to pass through to Germany the first time. After both Ed and Al went back to Germany after fighting Dietlinde, somehow the score was deemed even and Al was allowed his memory back as equivalent exchange. At least, that's how it's presented. Once again, matters really weren't very clear, and we're left to speculate how and where the various "trades" went to allow all of this gate-passing to happen.

That makes sense. Thanks, I think I have some ideas brewing in my evil little brain. You've been a big help!

Ross and red water
*delurks* I think I know why Ross wasn't affected by the red water.
As far as I can tell, red water doesn't affect people unless you try to do alchemy with it, touch it directly to your skin, or you have long term exposure to the fumes (like in the Russel/Fletcher eps).
From what I remember, Ed had clapped his hands before he stepped in the red water. That triggered a reaction when he stepped it, but it was too strong. In comes Ross. Ross probably walked on the red water, but she wasn't performing alchemy. And since she had shoes on and wasn't exposed to it too long, she was all right.

That's my little theory about it. Hope this helps. *goes back into lurking*

Nice theory. It makes lots of sense.
