[News] Fullmetal Alchemist Manga Volume 3
I don't believe this has been posted yet, but Volume 3 of the manga is out, and it includes a short preview of the novel, Land of Sand. I believe it is the first chapter.

I'm losing faith in the quality of Viz's translation. They've retained "President" (if they do use different words from manga to anime, I stand corrected)

Also, the editing needs help. There's at least one sentence structure error, that I noticed.

I'll keep purchasing them, to support the industry, and because the awesome story is still largely intact, but I wish they'd get their act together.

Actually Viz is doing fine with their manga that aren't/weren't on Shonen Jump. They make mistakes here and there on FMA, but it's pretty much solid and intact. At least there's no censoring going on in the manga like there is on Dragon Ball (Z). o_o

Hmm.. I suppose that's why. Mostly all I read is Shonen Jump and FMA... and Shojo Beat *huggles Nana*.... I'm so mainstream *cries*

Anyway, yeah, thanks for pointing that out ^^

Actually, the novel is out, too. Has been for a couple weeks now. I think there was even a review of it posted a little while ago.

I was aware of that, I was pointing it out for those that wanted to sample ^^

I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It was weird because I saw the episodes in my head anyways.....and kind of heard the voices that went with the VAs. I intend to buy it when I've got the money.

Viz does make a few mistakes here and there, but mostly, I think they do Arakawa-sama justice. They haven't totally screwed with it, like some mangas.

I also can't wait till I have enough money to buy "Land of Sand"

The only thing that really threw me with the translation for Vol. 3 was how they actually used the word "Otaku". They water so many other things down for us, so why didn't they replace that with "geek"?

And for some reason I remember them calling Ed’s watch gold in the translation somewhere. That was Vol. 1 or 2, though.
Captain Chrismyuutsuuman on October 20th, 2005 03:31 am (UTC)
Because really, the term Otaku is just something not completely translatable. Calling someone a "geek" just doesn't have a hard hitting effect like "otaku" does. >_> Not to mention, the term's also left alone in the subtitles of the DVDs.

I think the watch was referred to as gold in the scanslated version too. So maybe it's just a difference between anime and manga.

I noticed that too! I know "otaku" doesn't strickly mean "geek," but having a japanese word there struck me as out-of-place. :(

>_> $10 is absolutely NOTHING compared to the prices most manga used to be back before Viz lowered the price. Try paying $14 or $15 for manga in the old days. Besides, it's well worth actually supporting FMA rather than going with fan-translated stuff that isn't always correct, like many of the previous chapters that translated "aitsu" or "yatsu" as "fella" even when refering to females. >_>

AUGH yes, Yebyosh annoyed me with his "fella"s. DX

I didn't actually read the 'Land Of Sand' but we all should know what the stories like...right? Though I love 'The Mystery Of Warehouse 13' ! That's epi. was such a funny one!

But I bought 'The Kidnapped Alchemist' (sorry if my translations are worng) in Japan. Loved it. Anyone else here have read it? I don't wanna spoil anything for anyone else....

But I still think the novel's are written really good! And the person writing is not Arakawa-sensei!

I like reading everything in the original way, if I can read it. Sometimes, people royally screw up on the translations.

I'm actually interested to know what the other novels are about. Even a brief summary would be nice. I know one has to do with Havoc evaluating Mustang but other than that I am clueless.
