A question on Edward's military status
I've never gotten this correct: is Edward formally part of the military? My recollection is that he's a "civilian soldier", but then if he's taken the State Alchemist exams, is known as a "dog of the military", and acknowledges (in the early anime eps) that he'd need to kill people if it were ordered....then doesn't that make him a military officer since it seems like he's getting part and parcel of the whole deal?

I just got a bit confused because fanfictions seem to point that he's not really part of the military.

Thanks.

Hmm... State Alchemists have the rank of Major if that's what you're asking about... So Ed is a Major. ;) 2 ranks below Colonel.

Yeah, the Major thing was what kept me from thinking he wasn't formally part of the military. Thanks.

My guess would be that "yes, he is". But then again, I'm not one for technical details.

Yes he is...technically. He's kinda a military officer because his rank is equal to Major (all State Alchemists start out at that rank and they can work their way up), and he is on hold to be sent to war if the situation should call for it.

Yes, the Major aspect was bothering me a little. Thank you for clearing this up. I can now write my fanfiction in peace. ^_^

A concept you may want to explore - I believe there are similar parallels in other militaries where people of certain skillsets are automatically given higher titles. I think Doctors at military units in the US are often of higher rank than average.

Do some research in case I'm wrong ;)

Well, I don't think we know for sure, but I assume Ed is not technically a soldier, because he is not required to wear a uniform and has no trainning. I assume that state alchemists are primarily civilians who work for the military, it's just that their connection to the military means that if a war starts, they will be the first called to active duty, so for that purpose they need some sort of default title, which is set as 'major'. I think Tucker is the typical state alchemist; he does research, but he doesn't have a uniform or any military duties. Roy would be an example of an alchemist who is *also* official military.

whether or not an alchemist is a part of the military like Roy and Armstrong, or simply a scientist on the military's payroll probably depends on how useful their particular subject is to the military. For instance, Roy, Armstrong, and Gran's particular styles of alchemy are very good for combat, Tucker's not so much. The military definately has an interest in talking chimeras though, so they put him up and let him do his work.

Ed, in a similar vein, his project of creating the Philosopher's stone, is something that he can't accomplish in an office in a uniform. As we see through the course of the series, his being a part of the military is a barrier sometimes, once the people find out that he's a State Alchemist (Youswell, anyone?). Also, that uniform is far from practical when you're darting around the country chasing leads. Another posssible reason why Ed doesn't wear a uniform is that he is still young, as often as we fans tend to forget that. And do they even make uniforms that small? (Sorry, had to do it)

But I believe that if a new war broke out, that Ed would be issued a uniform and sent to the front lines, just as Roy had. (This event is something that I, personally love to see done in fanfiction/art because that'd be the ultimate to Ed, and I don't think Roy wants to do it to him either.)

But that's my thoughts.

Looks like they don't:

I know it just an anime art, but I love this picture.

Well, he IS wearing Armstrong's uniform there... ^_^

There is also the issue of age here. Because of Edward's young age the Military may not have been able to fully recognize him as part of there regular active duty personal. (You'd think that there would be a minimum age requirement to enlist.)

Are scientists employed by the military considered soldiers? Yeah, I know most of the time you see 'em in a military uniform, but most of the time, they didn't actually have to go through a military academy or any boot camp...

I'm sure I hear some one call Ed "Major Elric" in an episode, I'll look for it, and He had to do all the test of the military and that things, and He always say he’s a “dog of the military” too, so he’s part of the military.

Then again, I have never think different from this o.o

It's true that some people of specific skills got a certain rank automatically and could build on that rank. For example during the Korean War nurses were automatically Leutenants and Doctors made Captain. And yes Ed was a Major. I think he has a certain amount of years he has to work under contract and will have to reinlist after that. In a war he might be an exception to the rule (just like he normally is) and I think it would depend how harsh his commander would be (whether to be sent out to fight or not.)

Wasn't the deal simply that Ed could use funding/information advantages from the militery and then, in turn, be used for missions or wars if necessary?
