Vaguely Semi-Serious Post. Sort of.
OK, we had semi-humorous FMA as live action here, and the rather interesting news that there is an interest in a live action FMA.

So, I submit to you this thought exercise. Imagine this is you will . . .
Let us say an FMA live movie is unavoidable. However we, being the FMA fans we are, are consulted by the Powers That Be on doing the film.

  1. What actors would you seriously propose for the roles.
  2. How would you engineer a good script of 90 minutes to 150 minutes to tell a good story of FMA, looking for a PG or PG-13 rating.

Step up to the challenge ;)

OK, my takes:

CAST IDEAS (No, I haven't thought of them all)
Frank Archer - Johnny Depp. Pure creepazoid role, he'd probably enjoy it.
Roy Mustang - Christian Bale He impressed the heck out of me in Batman Begins.
Gluttony - CGI. Andy Sekris as his voice.
Lust - Lucy Lawless.
Greed - Johnny Depp, Kevin O'Rourke or Hugh O'Gorman (Hugh'd also be a good Archer)
Scar - I do sort of like the Vin Diesel idea.

Chewing this over, I think you could condense the script. The story would essentially start by introducing Ed and Al already well into their search, they'd be introduced mysteriously of course and revealed in an action sequence. Winry is introduced patching Ed up.

We'd then meet the rest of the military cast, and there is, of course, a new clue for the Philosopher's Stone - Marcoh. Our heroes are off, and then we meet the sins, who are of course organized and working together. Scar is introduced at this point, so it's a three-way battle.

After the battle is over, Al and Scar end up together with Ed in pursuit of Marcoh. We learn the Ishbal backstory as Al realizes Scar may be a killer, but isn't what he seems. We also get backstory of the world here. Scar is suspicious of Lust's origins.

Ed and Al are reunited, Scar escapes, and we end up more trying to locate the Sins. Various backstory and subplot elements.

Our military heroes close in on the Sins, and we then discovery the duplicity of the Furer. Probably Hoho-pop would be mentioned, but most of the focus would be on making Bradley the master villain. Heavy conspiracy aspect here. Hughes dies - big sympathetic scene.

Next up, running battle as it appears a philosopher's stone IS being made, probably with all sorts of innocent victims being used - what nefarious purpose has been had? But quickly we find the truth of the stone and the desires of the Sins. Scar re-enters the picture of course, now re-focusing his efforts.

A final assault on the Sins is launched. Lust is killed by Scar in a kind of mercy-killing. Various cool alchemical battles. Roy versus Bradley in a mix of swords, fire, and of course Roy being very cool. The victims are saved - but one philosopher's stone is found . . .

Al is terrible decimated by Gluttony and fading. Ed uses the stone to return him to human. Semi-happy ending as Al, his memory fuzzy, remembers what happens. Scar escapes, but not after deciding to rebuild his homeland.

Roll credits.

Four hour movie?

Uhh... Lucy Lawless as Lust?? .___.;;; Isn't she a bit too old and not sexy enough? ._.;

1. For some reason, Sean Connery as Bradley seems to fit like a glove. Also, for Greed or Envy, I would definatly vote Jason Lee because the man plays an excellent villian. (If you have watched The Incredibles, he's the VA for Syndrome, if you're familar with live action, he was Azrael in Dogma and gave a great performance in that role.) His voice would probably suit Greed better though, since Envy is supposed to be more androynus.

I don't really know what I would suggest as a plot, although I think the fight sequences would benefit from some very heavy rock music. (Iron Maiden instrumental?)

I think it'd be neat if we gathered a bunch of plot ideas and had the community pick one, and maybe create a script for such a film. You know, have several people work on it and then several people edit. (And then, if we get really into it, illustrate it as a manga or comic book?)

You know, that actually would be an interesting idea. Think people would go for it?
Megmegkips on June 28th, 2005 07:24 pm (UTC)
We don't know if we don't try! I think that there's a strong possiblity that we could though. (And I'm totally willing to help with editing.)

I'm not up for hosting such a project, but am willing to toss in my ideas.

Oh sweet baby jesus, Connery's as Bradley?

Script-wise, would it be based off manga canon or anime canon?

If it were manga canon you could probably have a series of movies- sequels and stuff. A whole movie centered on the Xing characters? Hell yes!

I still think The Rock would make a good Scar. :x

...Actually, I don't think a FMA movie would work at all unless you find a perfect Ed. Aka, someone the right age, the right height, and able to pull off all the l33t fighting skillz. And that'd be next to impossible.

And he must be hot. And gold eyes wtf.

Paku Romi is the only true Ed in my opinion. >_>;;

The Rock is actually a good choice. He has charisma and is a smart gentleman, so I think he could get the handle on the character.

Um. For Ed? I'm thinking an unknown. I really can't think of anyone out there that I'd really like as him.

I would really prefer if the entire movie was acted by people who aren't big stars of any sort, for two reasons- I don't want to look at Ed or Roy or Riza or *anyone* and recognize their other roles because it takes away from the character and out of the immersive nature of the movie. I want to be watching the movie and see the characters and not the actor, if that makes sense. Secondly, big-name actors/celebrities cost a lot, and given that this movie wouldn't have much of a budget in the first place, it would be best if more money went to the actual writing of the script and directing than most movies get. If FMA was made into a live action, it would have to have strong writing to be able to carry the rather convoluted plot.

It would be all about Hughes and it'd be like CSI the movie on crack or something.

Screw everyone else. D:
Megmegkips on June 28th, 2005 06:16 pm (UTC)
I think it'd be interesting if someone actually did try a CSIesque Fanfic with Hughes. (Although Hughes as Grissom hurts my head.)

Here's my take on the actors if anyone is interested. I've got side-by-side pictures too, just to be convinced. =D

I know people are going to hate me for this but I think Tilda Swinton would make a great Envy (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0842770/).

She has played men characters and the androgynous evil? angel Gabriel in Constantine. I think she could pull off Envy really well. But that's just my opinion~~

Nicole Kidman for Riza Hawkeye. ^^

I really can't imagine anyone who could represent Ed and Al for what they're worth .___.
desudeitydes_akazim on June 29th, 2005 11:22 am (UTC)
I don't know, I think that we would have to think of worldwide actors, not just Americans, you know? Like, Germans and a few Russian actors would be good. And the only person I would ever accept as Ed is Paku, you know? T3T
spaz_sees_all on June 30th, 2005 04:13 pm (UTC)
If they just had to make a live action movie, all these cast choices would be better then the ones Anime Insider did. I'd have to kill Daniel Radcliff if he ever thought about taking the Ed part. I just would. Only Vic and Paku are Ed for me.
