One mystery solved....
So, earlier tonight vicemage and I were skimming through my FMA DVDs for particular scenes to analyze for cosplay reference. While cruising through episode 3, at the scene where Roy shows up at the Rockbells' the obvious question came up of what on earth happened to the hat he'd been wearing earlier in the episode?

We briefly paused the episode to look at the coat and discuss, happening to choose the scene in which Roy is holding up Ed's letter that is addressed to a name that has seemingly nothing to do with the series.

At which point the answer to what had happened to Roy's hat became clear- James Herbert took it!

Yeah, every time I watch episode 3, I notice that the letter that Roy has is adressed to James Herbert, which by the way, who the hell is that? It makes no sense!

*addressed (stupid typos!)

Roy said that he got gotten a letter from them but it said James Herbert, I'm guessing James Herbert works under him? But the letters in FMA never made any sense anyway. For some reason(eps 26) when Edo left a note asking Roy to take the bill for his expenses to HQ he only said one sentence about paying for the expenses and the rest was about science advancement in Britain and museums. I didn't even know Amestris had a Britain o_O.

Most of the text in books and letters are like that... one of them seems to be a review for a dnd guide. o.O;

The animators get lazy writing proper English to fill letters and book pages, so they just add what's important, and then copy and paste some filler literature they take from old, obscure books... XD

Hmm.......maybe James Herbert is related to Kyle Herbert..........which means that Falman took the hat!! Oh noes!! :O

The letter is addressed that way because that was Roy's original Alchemist codename. The James Herbert Alchemist.

I think James Herbert was Roy's predecessor and he dies so they simply forwarded the letter to Mustang... or Mustang just up and read it in spite the fact it wasn't adressed to him.
Or... the japanese artists who work on the anime don't know how to write cursive so they are just reproducing a signature thinking "Meeeeh... who's going to notice in Japan..."

The first part makes sense because I don't think Roy would have known Ed's father like as an aquaintance as much as like a legend or in books.

Mustang opened someone elses mail! *watches as he gets arrested, while screaming, "He stole my hat! I did it for revenge!!!"*

Well, if Mustangs true name is James Herbert then who cares!

...I'd still do him.

*cough*

I honestly think that James Herbert was a code name he may have used earlier on in his life. Which makes for some ve-ry interesting questions..

His hat.. probably blew away in the wind.

(Not the most exciting theory, I know. ^^' )

I always thought maybe Mustang was assigned to go investigate the letter and recruit Honenheim if he could. I doubt he ever new Honenheim.

And he lost the hat in a bet, but it so last year anyway. (ok, I made that up...)

In reference to darlingrawr's explination;

State Alchemists achieve a fake name once they join the military, right?

Perhaps Roy's actual name is James Herbert, and Roy is part of his Alias?
Rappydappydappy McTappyraptorix on June 18th, 2005 12:14 pm (UTC)
first of all, I'd like to applaud Amestris' amazingly sofisticated postal system, in which a single name is all that is required to offer as a return address. [/sarcasam]

Second of all... I think I know where the hat went.

Well, perhaps Pinakko's home has a hat rack by the front door? Knowing it's polite to remove one's hat and place it on a hat rack by the doorway (or maybe outside on the front porch), Roy must've 'lost' his hat there. Not sure, but did he 'lose' his rain coat too? If he did, means he put that dripping old thing on the hat/coat rack as well.

whats kinda disturbing is the fact that James Herbert is also a British Horror writer.
kawaiimae on June 19th, 2005 09:17 pm (UTC)
I think Roy explains it as James Herbert was the one who used to be in his position (as Colonel at the East City Unit...) Or something like that. ^^;; Since the list of people Ed and Al were sending their things to was quite old, some "military restructuring" happened.

Or something like that.

Still, James Herbert? How amazingly random. XD
