Over the past few days, we have been receiving a very large sustained ongoing DDoS attack against all of the servers on our IRC network. While we have made efforts to filter the attack, the person behind it has been very persistent and we have been forced to block all traffic to the servers at times to filter it. Unfortunately, the end result has been an unusable network and the loss of our secondary server.

Together with our main server provider, we have decided to close down what's left of the IRC network. We don't know for how long the attack will continue, and it has, at times, affected other servers (and paying customers) on the networks where the IRC servers are hosted. Ultimately, we decided that it's no longer worth the expense, resources, and trouble to deal with any more attacks and outages over a free service. While we understand how many of you have come to depend on the IRC network, we hope you can understand our position and do apologize for the short notice and inconvenience this causes. We would have liked to continue the IRC network for a long time to come, but with the current state of DDoS attacks on the Internet and the problem only increasing, this no longer seems feasible.

We would like to thank the providers who hosted our servers over the past few years for their support, and all of you who made the IRC network your home. At this time, we know who is responsible for the attacks and law enforcement is investigating. Should you have any information which might assist law enforcement, please send it to us and we will pass it along.

Feel free to pass this along to other comms where mircx was a dominant form of exchange.

So what does this mean?

*is clueless and feels ashamed for being so*
Candicechibigarm on February 22nd, 2004 03:57 pm (UTC)
Most fansubbers and scanslation groups used the MIRC X network.. that's all I know about.
Ananomoreprinces on February 22nd, 2004 04:04 pm (UTC)
means MIRC is dead. Won't really affect anything if you get your releases through bittorrent, but if you get them from actual IRC then best wait to find out where ANBU and AKeep are moving to.
Kathleenkimmycat on February 22nd, 2004 04:42 pm (UTC)
Thank you for clearing that up ^_^

I had been wondering what the hell had happened... To those who only use the bittorrent to find episodes, this probably means nothing; to those of us who used irc to find the older stuff or the rarer stuff... This is a major blow. I recently decided to get copies of the FMA raws; you can only download the recent raw eps from l33t-raws, all the other torrents died from lack of use. But on their mirc-x channel, you could find servers that had the eps. Damnit. And some groups only used irc channels for distro, they don't use bittorrent. Damnit.

Re: Damnit!
Even l33t-raws has died, apparently. I can't get 18 and 19 either. *sigh* Maybe I'll try Kazaa...
Aretearete on February 22nd, 2004 11:31 pm (UTC)
They've only moved!!!!
Try irc.rizon.net if you use mIRC or another client. Most of everybody that I use seems to have moved there. But l33t-raws I definitely found.

I was an op in two different anime music channels....and mircx is where I got all my info for new releases. ;_;

Now to switch to aniverse.....::cries::

Re: ???
you mean the bit is hosted on another server?

*thought anime.mircx.com was hosted on the mircx server*

Re: ???
okay now I gotcha...I was under the assumption that all the files were housed under the same server but just the domains where different...I mean it makes more sense to have the irc and bit housed on different servers for redundency sake but you never know...

thanks so much for the explaination :)

Re: ???
you'll notice that the actual links for the bittorrent files dont even reside on anime.mircx.com they just point to whatever group's torrent it is.
shisoushisou_san on February 22nd, 2004 06:12 pm (UTC)
dude that would explain why I couldn't get on mIRC earlier. >< most of my manga scanlations come from mIRC. This totally sucks, I hope they find the guy. Thanks for telling us !! :D
dotskeith on February 22nd, 2004 09:42 pm (UTC)
This is no way mean that mIRC is down, As you all should know, mIRC is just a client program to connect to IRC servers. ONLY MIRCX SERVER SHOULD BE DOWN BECAUSE OF THIS.(The attack may be attacking other servers as well) DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) Attacks just means that some F*ucker is in a sense trying to connect to the server multipal times reallly really fast, thats the best i can explain it. This slows the servers and stresses them. This is the best i can put it to you guys, Your FanSubGroups may have reloacted to a different server, so check with them.

argh!!! now where would i d/l my mangas >.> *need to find out asap where her regular manga chans went*
Jeanamefuri on February 23rd, 2004 02:14 am (UTC)
You can check the list made by the head guy at Mangadownloads that shows where most groups have moved to. Some have temp channels, some have moved to different servers. Anyway, the link is below.

It should be noted that this is ONLY the mircx series of networks, not the entire mIRC chain. I can still access IRC networks such as aniverse (which is where a fair amount of anime groups reside as well as several major fansub groups).

Once again, for those reading this, this does NOT mean a full shutdown of all IRC servers. Only the mircx series of servers has been shut down. Those who used DALNet may remember that it was this same set of tactics that caused problems with those servers last year.

i'm actually part of a fansub group and my bossperson said that the heads of the major fansub groups (i'm guessing this includes akeep and anbu) gathered and were trying to decide a good server to move their groups to (so its more convenient that they're all still on the same server) .. from what i heard, rizon is a good bet, but nothing's set in stone. i'll try and let you guys know more info if i acquire some ^_^
