Elysia's voice was adorable! <3

>.>;
I just realized something last week when I was re-watching the Japanese version of episode 23...
For the milk scene - with the cows in the background...
Ed hates milk -> And Arakawa-sensei draws herself in the form of a cow.

Does this mean Ed doesn't like Arakawa-sensei?
*shot* XD;;

Probably not, because she puts him through so much. XDXD He should be grateful she hasn't zeppelin'd him yet. XD

Not a bad episode. The dubbing was good. Elysia sounds a little bit too old for a four years old, but overall her voice was okay.

The only thing that bugs me was the way Al acted. In the Japanese version, Al was uncertain and confused about whether he is real or not. Here Al was whiny and pouted the entire episode. He seem...out of character.

Other than that, I like the episode, especially when Hughes "kidnapped" Winry. XD

*nods* I agree. Didn't really seem like the sweet Al that I'm used to - especially when he said "Whatever" and "Shut up". o____o

Al's VA has gotten so much better! I spent half of the episode going, "You go, kid!". Hughes' VA still bugs me a little. Elysia is sooo cute! I was melting in a puddle of cuteness!

Love the voices on these boys, I think the Al in this episode was fabulous. In the japanese version he was just to...polite to be so angry. In this he sounded much more sullen, much more a kid. His reactions were perfect. Also Ed yelling his name at the end was heartbreaking.
equvilantexchgn on April 16th, 2005 09:18 pm (UTC)
Amen!
I, being the proclaimed (by friends) princess of Angst, I thought Al sounded so much like a teenager this episode. In all the others he sounds so...childish..you know? It just shows that he is growing up...and that their relationship isn't perfect...despite how strong they are...

Ed yelling his name at the end was really heartbreaking and brought back alot of bad memories..for me anyway..I don't know why, but this episode, as well as the past like...FIVE have made me cry too hard
lord_pachi: roy_scarylord_pachi on April 16th, 2005 09:13 pm (UTC)
GOD. This part of the series is wonderful except for Al's angsting. Sure, believe the words of a serial killer over the words of your freakin' BROTHER. ARGH!! *wishes he could smack some sense into Al*

I couldn't help but inwardly chuckle at the sketch of Envy. And yay for first English mention of the Oroborous!

Despite it being the part of the episode I hate, angsting Aaron/Al was pretty good. "Just drink the stupid milk." Ouch.....Aaron sounded throughly pissed. He continues to be one of my favorite voice actors of the dub - very nicely done.

Was it just me, or did Ed's last cry of "AL!!!!" just tear at your heartstrings? ;_; Vic is doing REALLY well with conveying Ed's feelings for his little brother.
Melodyenjolras on April 16th, 2005 09:16 pm (UTC)
Ed tore at my heartstrings too! Vic's a pretty good crier. :3

I still love Hughes to pieces, but Al sounded really great too. I can tell that all of the VAs are getting better and better. ^^

Al was PMSing lolol. XD I think he was just as emotional in both versions, but I think he was conveying a different emotion in each version. O.o; I still think our little buddy Aaron is doing a good job though. ^^

And I've always loved the milk scene for some reason.Maybe it's the flying cows in the background. XD
luckiicharm on April 16th, 2005 09:26 pm (UTC)
meh
I saw this episode in japanese and i've got to say...it was much better. Vic's voice for Ed in this episode was great, it was alright. But Al's voice in the end of the episode was just a mood-killer. I was expecting Aaron to add more feeling to that part but...it just sounded so...meh. It actually made me tear in the subbed version, but in the dub...that part was just..you know what I mean. I just hope Al's voice gets a little better atleast.
lord_pachilord_pachi on April 16th, 2005 09:36 pm (UTC)
Re: meh
I don't see how Al's angsting could make you cry in either version. He was being too infinitely STUPID for me to want to cry for him. His voice wasn't the mood-killer, it's what he said that was a mood-killer. >_>

I mean, I usually really feel for Al. It does make me sad to think about his horrible condition. But this part.......I dunno.....I've always hated this scenario. Normal Al angst is fine, but Al angst at the level of pushing away his closest friends and family is just stupid. I could understand if someone FROM their family actually put the idea in his head, but it was only a serial killer....

You know, the most, erm.... acceptable thing I can say, is that the perspective for first time dub viewerers and ones who have already seen the Japanese version is much different.

Take that as you will. It applies to a lot of situations.
Angehangiechow on April 16th, 2005 09:29 pm (UTC)
I was annoyed that they made Al alot more hostile than in the original. Before he wasn't like "Shut up" or "Whatever".. he was just more.. quiet and pondering and sad.. not hostile and dafklfjdagd apathetic, it annoyed me.

But yeah. Good dub epi aside from that.
lord_pachi: roy_scarylord_pachi on April 16th, 2005 09:46 pm (UTC)
*shrugs* Sounds to me that it's just two ways it could have been done. Sullen and unsure, or sullen and apathetic. Either way, it was appropriate enough to lead to the ending result on the roof, so I'm fine with it. Just because he acted a certain way in the original doesn't mean it's automatically better.

In fact, if Al had originally acted like this in the Japanese version, you guys probably wouldn't have complained, right?

Everyone's great and Winry sounds a LOT better. But Al is just so.. sulky. Like a five-year-old who hasn't yet mastered the power of 'shut up'. >__<

Other than the ending, I SAW IZUMI!! xDXDXD

I just got my DVD boxset yesterday, and watched episodes 1-4 - Vic was good in them, but he's getting better and better.

Yes, Elysia sounds a tad too old in the dub, but perhaps they had to get a six year old in the studio because they act a little better? *shrug*

Hughes is good in this. I'm curious to see how well he does with the next few episodes.

I liked the way Al acted in this - and possibly the way he acted in the dub was a cultural difference. He was broody and polite in the sub because culturally, the japanese are an overly polite people. In the dub, he did an americanized version, where he was obviously shutting out his brother, and being pissy. :P

Then again, the voice director and writers for the dub just could mis-intrepreted the dialogue all together when working on this episode. ^^;;

I REALLY REALLY REALLY like Vic. *drools* He's a PERFECT Ed. *drools some more*

And yes, the last "Al" he uttered at the end was TERRIBLY heartwrenching. It brought tears to my eyes. *sigh*

The first time I saw episode two, I was in shock, I saw it again last night and I couldn't stop bawling at the end of it. So I'll just be crying from here until the end of the series. It's all just so sad!

I have to hand it to Funimation. I think they've done beautifully with this show so far. I actually like the dub more than the sub now, although the sub is still good in its own right.

That actually seems to be a very good reason for why there was a difference in his acting. At the very least, I'm glad you can find a debatable, intelligent explanation. Most people are just saying, "Well, he acted like so-and-so in the original, so that's obviously better than how he acted like so-and-so in the dub." I mean, would it kill them to give a real REASON why the way he acted in the original was better, rather than emphasizing the "original > dub" attitude?

Really loved this episode. There were a few notable changes that everyone's already touched on, so I won't go into that. XD I think that this is my favorite dubbed episode so far, personally.

The more I watch this dub, the more my hope for other dubs grows. The characters are cast so well, unlike some of the dubs that I first started watching as a kid. I love Ed, Al and Hughes, and though I dont really like Winry's VA that much, I liked her in this episode.

I dont like the anime that much; personally the whole bit between the brothers was better in the manga in my opinion (lacking Angsty!Al with amazing Jumping off the Roof Action and all that. :eye roll: ) That said, the ending scene of this episode is still angsty and depressing because of the voice work, so I was part hesitant and part eager to see it dubbed.

Ive been watching since episode 16 and since then, I loved Aaron Dismuke; he always did very well and I loved how angsty and sad he sounded, but in this episode he was so much harsher in his delivery. That had to do alot with the fact that Al was more upset than in the sub. In the scenes leading up to the confrontation at the end, Al just was very offhand when he spoke to Ed but in the dub he was more vindictive and angry. And I liked Dismuke's performance of it until the last part, when he sounded like he had a cold and was trying to cover it up. Compared to the sub, Al's asking 'what he has to trust when his body is empty' was very hollow, and it lacked emotion to me. It was the opposite with Vic Mignogna. Im growing to have a deep fondness for that man's voice. ^_^= He did particularly well in this episode, especially in the last scene. (It sounds so bad to lay out so much for Dismuke and then just say "Mignogna kicks ass!!" but its 3 am and my brain is starting to shut down. Forgive me. ^^;;; )

And as an offhandishlike afterthought: I loved the milk scene. It was perfect, to a T. Hee hee. Also, Hughes describing his daughter as a bundle of cute and calling Roy an obsessed freak. Much love for Hughes. <3

Of all the things for me to notice...
Any one else hear Winry's voice echoing? This was right before she and Ed went up to see Al.

Anyway, great episode. Love the "I hate milk" scene. Don't like Al being so angsty, but after what he's gone thru...

Hughes!! <3

First allow me to do some fangirling...

OMG I LOVE HUUUUUGHES!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE HIS VOICE ACTOR!!!!! SQEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!! That maniacal laugh of his as he drug Winry back to his layer of cuteness... Priceless.

Anyway, as always I loved Vic's portrayal of Ed. I have always liked Winry's VA too. I think most of the show's dub voices are pretty damn good, and those that I have problems with weren't in this episode much or at all. What really fascinated me was their take on Al in this episode. In the Japanese version he's more quite and depressed kind of moping, while in the dub he was more pissed off silent treatment moping. At first the difference really bothered me, but I thought about it, and I think it is a perfectly valid interpretation. Al is a 14 year old boy after all, he has the right to be angsty and well..."bitchy" every once and a while ;) What really made the interpretation work for me (because it could have crossed the line and made Al just come off as a jerk) was Aaron’s voice acting. No matter what anyone says about him, I think he's doing a fantastic job.

And oh man....yay for Cameos!!!!! XD I am officially dreading (because I will be a basket case when it happens!) and excited for the next few episodes. *tear* *excitement*.... *tear of excitement*?
