Random Observation!
In Episode 7, when Ed is writing his letter to Winry, I noticed he was left-handed.

Yeah. Big deal for me since I'm also a lefty and you know how uncommon it is to see anime people writing with their left-hand since Asian culture makes it clear that people should be taught to write/eat right-handed. Yeah. I get excited by things like this.

kind of a dick, if that's what elusive meansprovetheworst on February 22nd, 2004 03:06 pm (UTC)
Uh, he did lose his right arm, you know. He's probably not comfortable using his automail hand as his main hand, and so... *shrug*

yeah, i thought of that after i posted. But still. He could have learned after 3 or 4 years.

And more randomness: since his new arm is connected to the nerves anyways, if he were left-brained (and thus, right-handed), he could still use it. It's hard to learn to write with your other hand, and so i think it would be easier to learn to write again with the right instead of relearning everything with the left.

Oooohhh... If Ed's a lefty.... Yay! I'm a lefty too!

Go go left handers! We rock, yes we do!

Yeah, I noticed that, too. But in episodes one and three, he was drawing with his right hand. So he must have switched after he lost his arm.

bah. so much for my theory. XD

Maybe he's ambi. Or...bah. I give up. He writes well left-handed anyways.

Ed-kun was born right handed, as shown by the manga flashbacks. But given that the automail process is supposed to take years, it's not surprising that he learned to write with his left hand. In the manga, I think he only uses his left hand for writing, whereas in the anime he seems to flip back and forth.

As for anime/manga characters being traditionally right handed, I think it's not so bad as you think. (I'm left handed myself and always on the lookout for characters who are also right brained. ^^ ) From what I can tell, Asian culture no longer has a great stimga against lefties, just as Western culture has lessened its stance on the same subject. It's just that there aren't that many left handed manga-ka, so they don't create as many left handed charas. There's still Tsuzuki from Yami no Matsuei though, as well as Ryoma and Tezuka from Prince of Tennis. There are a handful of others who seem to switch off, like Ed-kun and Sanzo from Saiyuki.

But it's always neat to find another leftie, isn't it? Very little makes me squee more than finding another lefted handed or ambi chara, especially when they are utterly cool about it. ^_^

Re:
*scratches nose* Oh, I understand the stimga against lefties. x_x My grandmother freaked out when I was five or six since I was left-handed and forced me to write with my right hand. Now I'm all sorts of screwed up ... I write/draw right-handed, but for anything else I'm either dominantly left, or ambidexterous. It makes my head hurt to think about it sometimes. x_____x

Really? Ara... I know some left handed people who had problems growing up or who were forced to use their right hand, but compared to fifty or a hundred years ago, there are a lot more of us who were able to get away just being predominatly left handed. At least we're not being burned as witches or tossed into mental asylums anymore, ne? One would hope not at any rate.. ^_^

Re:
Tsuzuki is left handed? oo;; I'm a total YnM fan and never knew that.

Gosh, all these left-handed people... makes me sad. (Though I'm ambi for everything except writing, which I suck at anyways...) xD

I've become slightly ambidextrous since my parents *tried* to teach me to become right-handed but then gave up half-way. So I can sort of draw/write right-handed and i cut with only my right. weird.

i'm left-handed too!!! luckily my parents didnt force me to write wif my right hand o_o (even though i'm a chinese, i guess my parents dun care bout that lol) but then i cant write at all wif my right hand ^^;; weird thing is i only type wif my right hand (lazy typer me) cuz it will juz show me down if i type wif both hands. guess i got used to it. but i still type pretty fast o_o

Yeah, I'm that weird...
