English manga preview!
At the local MediaPlay today they had copies of a short preview of the English version of the FMA manga. The preview's about 20 pages long, and is the beginning of the first chapter of the manga. Since these things were being given away and it's a good sample of the translation, I figured I might as well scan and upload it for everyone. Not a very high-quality scan, but it's just a preview, anyway.

Take a look! (another place to download it, thanks to EvilGamerX)

(ah, and I don't think it'll be a problem, but if the link should happen to stop working let me know and I'll see if I can toss it up elsewhere)

Alright, was reminded of my (now unused) Homestead account, so I uploaded it there instead. There *should* be plenty of bandwidth for people to download, if it does go out then I'll leave the files up here and here as well, it's not like I'm using those accounts for anything, anyway.

Edit: Oh, and if the links aren't working or you don't want to bother trying them, AIM me (screen name is in my profile) and I can send you the file directly.

The link is already not working. :(

o_O Wow, well, that's impressive. I wish Geocities actually had a function to check the bandwidth as its being used... >_> Will see what I can do.

The problem with that is that it has a limited number of downloads. It'd be best if someone else were willing to spare a little webspace, I don't really have any of my own...

I can host it on homestead. It's not much better than geocities, but it allow direct linking. And I have never used up my bandwith yet, but I've never had that much traffic...well, the point is I could try if you want.
ACacdragonmaster on April 16th, 2005 01:26 am (UTC)
....good point. And I'd totally forgotten I had an account there, too. >_>;;

Not a bad translation. Not the greatest, I prefer the fan scanlations. But they aren't bad at all.

Yeah, me too I prefer the scanlations. ;) Still it's great that it is translated! Ahhh I wish it were licensed too in france...TT Hopefully there're still the scanlations!! :D

Mmmmhmmmm...

Yup, I definately prefer the scanlations... and after reading all the mangas, I'm not sure I'm gonna buy the FMA manga books.... except... it wouldn't hurt to check out all the omakes in the back of the book ^^ (I could read 'em for free at Borders XD)

One of the pages, where it talks about the manga's price and availability, it says "Bimonthly"... so does that mean they're gonna churn out the 9 or so volumes already in about 4 months?
amikitty: The Alphonse Dietamikitty on April 16th, 2005 09:56 am (UTC)
Looks like it. Vol 1 comes out May 3d and Vol 2 comes out on July 5th.

So, if they do stick with the bimonthly releases:
Vol 3 - Sept 2005
Vol 4 - Nov 2005
Vol 5 - Jan 2006
Vol 6 - March 2006
Vol 7 - May 2006
Vol 8 - July 2006
Vol 9 - Sept 2006
Vol 10 - Nov 2006

I'd host it if I got it. >.>

Ehe, sorry if they die, I really don't have my own webspace to host it from.

(and the Homestead account should have had like a gig of bandwidth, did that get all used up already?? o_O;;;)

Oi........the links don't worry. All three of them. Or maybe it's just my computer. >_<'

lord_pachi: refrigeratorlord_pachi on April 16th, 2005 11:01 am (UTC)
Ah, nevermind. One of them works now.

I agree with most everyone else, too. Besides the "agnostic" line, that's a pretty decent translation so far. Even though, at the moment, I still prefer the online translations, that won't stop me from buying these come May. ^_^

Considering this is Viz, I'm also glad they didn't do that thing where they just randomly make one or two words bold in every other speech balloon if they're an important part of the sentence or something.....a lot of their Shounen Jump manga do that, and it's really pointless and annoying.

Snagged from um, the neo account. I've been curious to see how the manga'll turn out, so thank you! ^^

I actually really liked the translation. Viz didn't take the liberties they did with Naruto, and seemed to really try to keep it close to the original. None of the original power felt lost, and I was quite sad that it ended at one of my favorite parts.
xxxnaminexxx on April 16th, 2005 07:44 pm (UTC)
I like the translation, but I'm so used to the scanlations...

I will probably buy the manga though so I won't have to stare at my computer all day. :oP
ceruleanpureceruleanpure on April 16th, 2005 08:20 pm (UTC)
Besides the "agnostic" point that was already mentioned...

On the first page, this English version has Ed saying
"Oh no..." http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v477/ceruleanpure/01.jpg

*holds up Japanese manga* In the same speach bubble, this says "Chikushoo" (yes, there's an extra "o" in there).
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v477/ceruleanpure/Manga-1.jpg

*shrugs* I know it's just a little thing, but - for that situation - I think swearing has a bigger effect.

I mean, if I was in that situation with my leg gone, blood everywhere, and my younger brother nowhere to be found - I think I'd be letting out a string of curses as oppose to saying "Oh no..." ^__^;;
Jasonevilgamerx on April 16th, 2005 09:53 pm (UTC)
Hmmm. It looks fine, except for the translated sfx. Too bad the sfx weren't treated as they were with the Evangelion manga. I don't really have a problem with Viz, it's just the sfx and the translations in a lot of the stuff in SJ (especially One Piece). I'll buy the first volume. If it is fine, I'll buy the rest. If not, I buy the japanese volumes. Simple as that.

ooh~ Viz's translation is not bad. In fact it rivals something put up by the fans.. I guess. One thing about translations, there are some words that make more sense in their native language, like curse words and stuff, but I think if it doesn't take away the heart of the story then it doesn't really matter what it's translated into. I'd buy it if I see it :)

Thanks for the preview!
