Okay, so the other day I wrote to the people at Hot Topic about their product descriptions for the Fullmetal Alchemist t-shirts. I dunno, I felt like kinda just making them aware of the fandom and how their product summaries weren't technically correct for what symbols from the show on the t-shirts really meant and a lot of people I talked to about it agreed with me.

So, I sent them an email saying that where they said "schematic star circles" it would probably be more appropriate to put "alchemic arrays" and that fans of the series who would buy the shirts would be thinking of them as those and not as "schematic stars." And they had no idea what the "flamel" was and were just calling it a symbol of the show. So, I told them what it was and anyways... He got back to me today.

I don't have the originial email I sent because I sent it from the website. But, I do have the two emails he sent me back:

I got this one today at about 3:30 PM.

Hey Sama,

Well, thanks for claritying the verbiage on the Full Metal tees for us. Funimation does not send us the product descriptions...they are written by our internet copywriter, so they certainly are not an ultra educated anime fan. We'll try and make them more accurate for you and your friends...

Scott M, men's tee buyer

And I got this one a couple hours ago though I didn't read it until a few minutes ago.

Hey Sama,

Let your friends know the descriptions have been updated on our internet site.

Was I being annoying? Yes. But look! They edited it! And, you know, I am an ass... but I found this to be amusing and really good of them.

Random after thought... calling the flamel an actual flamel probably will confuse some of the dubbies... >>;

Here are the originial product descriptions:

"Alchemist schematic star logo (1) screened on the front in white, a large black logo (2) screened on the back and a small hit on the left sleeve."

"This black T-shirt has a dark but colorful front screen of Edward Elric and Alphonse Elric standing in front of a star schematic(1)."

That's surprising that they actually fixed it. o_O

But you didn't bug them about "Full Metal"? Shame on you. ;p
Samsamaside on April 6th, 2005 08:30 pm (UTC)
Haha, well, I dun think I could bug Hot Topic about that... I'd have to go after FUNi I think... and I'm not brave enough to do that.

I was dead afraid that first email would be like "ZOMFG YOUR IP HAS BEEN BANNED FOREVERZ!!!11 PWNZOR'D!"
Gregjkaizer on April 6th, 2005 08:32 pm (UTC)
I wouldn't have worried about that... I'd be more worried about being ignored. >_o

But bugging FUNi would be useless wouldn't it? Don't they already do Fullmetal? O_o;
Gregjkaizer on April 6th, 2005 08:36 pm (UTC)
Let's have some fun~ :D

"Hi. I'm a long term fan of Fullmetal Alchemist, and have recently noticed that your online store offers t-shirts for sale.

However, upon reading, I noticed that you have "Full Metal Alchemist", while the true title is "Fullmetal Alchemist"... I know it isn't something huge, but for the hardcore fans it's something we've grown tired of seeing.

If that could be changed, it would be wonderful! Thanks a lot!

*sends* XD
Sam: Ho- slappin'samaside on April 6th, 2005 08:43 pm (UTC)

Did you really send that? I could add it in my next email too him, lol. ^_^
Gregjkaizer on April 6th, 2005 08:47 pm (UTC)
Yes I did send it. ^_~
Samsamaside on April 6th, 2005 08:49 pm (UTC)
Heehee, yeah, we're cool. XD

Samsamaside on April 6th, 2005 08:43 pm (UTC)
Yeah, they do... my head decided to die for a minute... I blame my physics work. ._.

I am so glad I'm done with that stuff. I've got 2 count them TWO friends who are physics majors. They are graduating this year so that's 4 years of masochism.

That's kind of neat. I like Hot Topic a little better now, even if they're horribly over-priced. ^^;

Wow. That was polite. ^_^

Man. I haven't been able to find the Tee-Shirt yet. We have two Hot Topics, though, and I've only been to one.
But anyway, grats on making them fix it! ('schematic star circles'... I mean, Really.)
Oneiroelpida: Reading is Sexyoneiroelpida on April 6th, 2005 08:38 pm (UTC)
I'm almost tempted to go buy one, just because that guy actually seemed to care. It just feels like you should support companies that actually bother to listen...
rukushorukusho on April 6th, 2005 08:54 pm (UTC)
I think I may actually go back and shop there now. Just becasue they changed that for the shirt, it looks cool, and the fact that they have Cowboy Bebop and NGE shirts too ^_^ Thats so nice they actually listened!
EvilHippo of the Clan MacHippo: 13 [writing]evilhippo on April 6th, 2005 08:56 pm (UTC)
I noticed that "star schematic" thing when I got some random advertisement e-mail from them, but I sort of chalked it up as something that wouldn't get fixed. Glad to see they listened! (-: And I learned a new word today! Claritying! Verbiage is such a beautifully verbose word. Even sort of means verbose (or lines about something, so I'm sure it's more of an adapted technical advertising term).
Samsamaside on April 6th, 2005 09:07 pm (UTC)
Haha, yeah, that's where I saw it too. After listening to this horribly uneducated radio broadcast about the series the day before which I couldn't complain about, I kinda jumped on the chance to try and change this.

And, surprisingly, they answered and look what they did for us.

I was really surprised and I thanked him immensley, lol.

My respect for Hot Topic just increased.
devils_devotion on April 7th, 2005 07:08 am (UTC)
I have no respect for them. My DISLIKE of them increased when they decided to whore out our beloved Hagaren for their self-serving, corporal needs, though.

I don't think it was Hot Topic's choice. It was most likely FUNimation that went to them to ask to sell the shirts, just as other anime companies have done. And it's not like they designed the shirts--I remember seeing a site with a ton of FMA shirts, including these (though they didn't have the English logo on them XD) a while back. FUNi is getting a lot of FMA merchandise out there, and this is just one of them. Where else do you see anime shirts being stocked?

The only thing I don't like about Hot Topic is that they're annoyingly expensive, I'm surrounded by posers who think they're so punk/goth for shopping there, and the ones around here have extremely rude and haughty attitudes.

Anywho, you, Sam, are awesome :B

Hence my dislike of them. Still, sorry if it seemed like I was being wanky. I guess you could say that I'm not going to be too thrilled to see posers prancing around with one of my favorite shows plastered all over their wannabe bodies.

(And I'm not a n00b racist. I just keep coming off as bitchy, don't I? *sporfle*)

Adaadalove on April 7th, 2005 04:02 pm (UTC)
Nah, I can understand XD;;; I admit, I too did feel rather OMGTHERE'LLBEPEOPLEWITHMYFANDOMONTHEIRCHEST at first. But now I'm just glad I'll be able to get it, too.
devils_devotion on April 8th, 2005 04:25 pm (UTC)
I think I'm just against fandom merchandise in general. Unless it's something really hot like that Ed X Roy clock from Hong Kong. Yup.

reiuji on April 6th, 2005 09:20 pm (UTC)
haha, that's so cool that they changed it. I bought my T-shirt in the store (*is actually wearing the red one right now*) and never saw the website description, but I know that if I did it would have annoyed me. But I wouldn't have bothered to email them about it. It's cool that you actually did.

I walked into Hot Topic yesterday and saw the shirt and SO bought it!!! XD I looked at it, all folded up and was like, "Ok... You shouldn't be spending money... BUT... If there is a flamel on the back, it's SO yours!!" *flip over* ... *run to cash register* XD

I have that red shirt. I <3 it!

(And I'll be wearing it on Saturday at Sakuracon, if anyone else is going. XD)

I'm really amazed they changed it O_o beyond cool. I respect them quite a bit more for that.

I said this to you in chat last night, but it's worth saying it again: You ROCK for doing this. And they went up about 50 coolness points in my eyes for making the corrections.

Now I have to go there this weekend and see if they got in the new action figures.
