DVD annoyance
Okay, what's the story with that stupid edit to Ep 6? The DVD versions are supposed to be unedited, where is my Ed slamming his fist into his hand? Why is he still clapping his hands together in edited badness? These were supposed to be unedited, where is the unedited version?

*wipes away the froth*

You're kidding!! GRRRR!!!
anax imperatoranax on April 6th, 2005 06:04 pm (UTC)
I AM NOT! I wish. I am incensed, needless to say, and it makes me FEAR for Ep 14 where there's another edit (I think that's the next edit anyway, and it was an important one).

The edit was made by Studio Bones themselves. I'm betting the Japanese DVDs also have that edit as well.

*makes plans to ambush someone in Japan to find out*

I knew that, but I had (perhaps foolishly) assumed that it was part of the toning-down-for-Americans. It fits with what often happens to violent anime.

The DVDs are still supposed to be unedited ... they can't call them "unedited" if there's an edit. Who made the edit is, IMHO, irrelevant. Even if God himself makes an edit, it's still an edit.

Well, it's not new. A lot of japanese studios have gone back and redo/re-edit episodes for the Japanese DVD release. Sometimes they not happy with that particular episode and want to redo it for various reason. For extreme example, the early episodes of the Negima TV series were poorly animated that the studio decides that they want to change directors and redo those episodes and possiblilty releasing that fixed versions to DVD (at least that's what I heard).

Erm, what part was edited in ep 6? I just watched it yesterday; I can't believe I don't remember. XD I need to start paying more attention. *flails*
anax imperatoranax on April 6th, 2005 07:31 pm (UTC)
When Gracia is in labor, Ed gets frustrated, and in the aired version, slams his fist into his hand (inadvertantly forming a circle). He later reaches down and grabs the pan of cold water, and makes it hot again.

The edited version has Ed clapping his palms together instead of beating his other hand with his fist. He laces his fingers, and kind of looks like he's praying, although he obviously isn't. It's a pointless, annoying edit.

They're not all bad. The reproduction quality is great, and they have the amusing little "alternate" previews (Roy hits on Al in one of them).

It'll be awhile until the next (recalled by me) edit, which is in 14. If that one is in there also, I shall ... uh ... okay, I'll probably just rant and rave in my own journal, BUT STILL!

Hmmmm, is there a reason why punching his palm would've required an edit? I can understand making Gran's death a lil less bloody, (BUT IT WAS SOO COOOL!)... but..... something pointless as punching your fist?!

Also, from the early episodes, either episode 1 or the the episode where we see Ed and Al as children when they transmute their mother...... one of those...

Anyway, what I'm getting at, is I noticed in one of those episodes, was that Edward's stump of either a leg or an arm was totally not bleeding like it should have... Someone with both DVDs check for me, cuz I know it's in those first handful of episodes...
anax imperatoranax on April 6th, 2005 08:14 pm (UTC)
I don't recall any bloody stump edits ... I'll check the DVD tomorrow (too tired now) but the version we recorded off Cartoon Network is deleted already so I can't look at that. But I don't remember any edit like that.

Nalavashi: Ed - fangirls attack [by nalavashi]nalavashi on April 6th, 2005 08:33 pm (UTC)
Noooo~! T_T I haven't watched it yet, but I was wondering if they'd do that.

I don't see why it wouldn't work for Ed to punch his hand to make the circle, when in ep 44 Hohenheim is able to make the circle by "clapping" with only one hand. That's enough proof that you don't have to have both hands exactly pressed against each other to make it. If Bones was so worried about correcting an error, they should have fixed the part in ep 4 when Ed has two human hands. >_<

are they going to add in Jabba the Hutt while they're at it? OH! They could put in some Imperial Walkers, those would really make the series.

*is still pissed about the Hayden edit at the end of Jedi*

I wouldn't get royally ticked off over an edit as pathetically minor is this. The only types of edits that are annoying are ones where they completely take out scenes, or a different character says another's lines - ya know, something like that. Because that's the only part where Ed supposedly uses his fist, it makes sense that BONES would want to fix that. It's not like it ruins the entire series.
anax imperatoranax on April 7th, 2005 05:03 pm (UTC)
Dude, are they going to "fix" it in the 40s when he's doing alchemy left and right without clapping his hands together then? o.O It didn't need to be fixed. It wasn't broken to start with.

It's not the size of the edit, it's the fact that there is one at all that irks me. And I wouldn't call myself "royally ticked off" ... well, not anymore anyway. I'm not losing sleep, to be sure.
