[pic] Surrender Dorothy

(a real LJ cut)

This is a pic of the two Alphonses--Alphonse Elric (of Amestris) as well as Alphonse Heiderich, the Alphonse with blue eyes whom Edward meets in "our world." This pic had a lot of inspirations, really... At first I had always wanted to draw a pic like the one scene in the music video "Final Distance" by Hikaru Utada...one where there were two Hikarus on each side of a piece of glass inside a tube, and their hands were touching.

But really, at first I had wanted to draw the Elric brothers in this pic instead of the two Als...but then I asked my friend tears_priestess which would be better--two Als or the brothers, she said that the idea of two Als are more intriguing...

So then I thought about the pic some more, and then decided to draw it with movie!Al bound in wires to show that his world is inorganic and filled with technology while Amestris!Al is being "born" from a mass of tentacles that depicts an organic feel. But they are both trapped and they are on opposite sides of a piece of glass, so they're never destined to touch each other.

Why "Surrender Dorothy" as a title... Well, in the movie of "Wizard of Oz," as I'm told, there was a part where the witch rides across the sky writing out letters "Surrender Dorothy." In the story WoO, Dorothy is also in a different world--so who's surrendering what to whom? Alphonse Elric surrendering his brother away with the way his arms are up...or Alphonse Heiderich with his world and technology to Edward?

Pic was done with blue drafting pencil, darkened with a 0.5 mechanical pencil, coloured in Painter 7, then touched up in Photoshop. Took me nearly more than a week...>__< urk.

There are textless and glassless versions of this pic.

Holy crap, that is deeply kickass. I'm not sure how to offer concrit, since... uh... I'm slightly stunned. The picture is just so pretty, not to mention an interesting concept.

They're beautiful, really. I love how you draw your characters so thin and feminine (especially Envy in the Hojuen pictures), and (somewhat) mechanic versus mystique appearance.
Makes me think of the Second Alicce in Wonderland book, where Alice goes through a mirror, though I can't possibly recall its name <_<. The fact that they want to touch each other, that they reach out for this, contributes to the elegant aesthecism of the pictures. As lame as I may sound, I shall say it nonetheless 'It's moving.' xD;.Or simply, grabs you at the chest and then shakes you up and down like a milkshake. I'm done with the immature imageries xD;;. And, I am sorry.

Thank you^^ In this new style, practically EVERYONE is like this--really slender...even the huge guys are somewhat like that... And I've always liked the idea of drawing "contrast" pictures.

The book is called "Through the Looking Glass," as the person downstairs has said, and I can't say that I've read it, but I know what it is.^^

If you watch the music video of "Final Distance" by Hikaru Utada and then look at this pic, you'll understand the desperation that I was trying to get in this pic.^^
