Height Issue
Ok, this idea popped into my head as I was walking home from Geo class a little while ago. If what is said is true about Ed's height (4'6" with no shoes on and his hair wetted down), that would REALLY make him a midget (I'm not making fun of Ed's height (right now aheh), just trying to point something out ^_^).... Now I was thinking that I'm 5'5" (Most women range from 5'2"-5'8"), there is no way Ed could really be that short because that would put him about the height of a 10 year old... I would guess he's more around 4'9"-5'... But that's only my thoughts.... What does everyone else think?

He's 150cm. That's 4'11". WITH his hair antenna and boots, he's 165cm, which is approximately 5'5"

Sadly, it makes more sense than you might think. Winry commented when she had to replace Ed's automail for the first time in the series that Ed had only grown an inch or so. I wonder if it had to do with the human transformation - if trying that had taken something else away from him than his arm and leg.

...taken...a few inches?! XDDDD That just sounds amusing to me.

Remember...he's still just a teenager...im sure he'll get a little growth spurt eventually :P

My dad is on classic example. One month he was 5'5" then the next he was nearly 6'. He had to buy all new clothes. Give Ed time. He may yet reach 5'4 ^-^

Oh I agree about the not being much taller than 5' (as I said in the orginial post ^_^) that's kinda why I was guessing between 4'9"-5'. Now the issue of the automail also came up in my thoughts, but I don't think the body itself would stop growth because if you look at amputees that loose some of they're limbs at young ages and are fitted with prostetic ones, the "real" limbs continue to grow like normal. But yes, the weight of the automail must have caused his body to slow down it's growth due to the weight of the steel used (His limbs have to at LEAST each weigh 35-50 lbs easy O.o)

That's not true. My friend is 4'10" and turns 15 this year. I love reminding her how she's the same hight as Edo.. and proceeding to call her shimp and chibi. The reaction is priceless :D

LOL!!! But a 10 year old is between 4'-4'6" X3.... I was about the same height as your friend when I was 15 *is now 24 and is the proud height of 5'5" X3*

4'11"? That is depressingly short. >.< I went to school with a girl who was only 4'11" and her head barely even came up to my chest.

...No wonder Ed is so asexual. He's too short to see a girl's chest. XD

Well, considering he was what, 11? when everything happened, and he was already a bit shorter than Al.. assuming that his automail has stunted his growth since that time, then yeah, I'd be surprised if he was much taller since then. No wonder he's always pissed off.
sun slammer.care on February 22nd, 2005 03:53 pm (UTC)
On Serpents-cross.com, they did the math. In the manga, he said he was 160 cm. And they found out he was actually 140 cm. That's short, for someone who's 15 years of age. XD
Marikaitou_marina on February 22nd, 2005 04:29 pm (UTC)
WTF? In my manga, he says he's 165cm, and all the height charts say he's 150cm without the hair antenna and boots.

Umm, Ed really *could* be the short. His father is quite tall, but sometimes it happens. I've seen some *very* short people before (and not just those with genetic conditions that cause abnormally stunted grwoth, just short people).

He does appear to be a bit taller in the image on the movie site, but probably only by a matter of inches. He may just be doomed to forever be a shorty.

...oh, and incidently, diet can have a *lot* to do with height. Eating a more Western diet has caused a lot of very tall young Japanese guys, it's possible that what Ed eats (or doesn't eat) is having an impact on his growth.

hence the huge deal in the manga with the milk.... //_^
nikui_kuyami on February 22nd, 2005 05:55 pm (UTC)
Ed's height sorta confuses me. I have seen people say that he is 4'6, 4'11, and 5'5. The manga says he's 165 cm with boots and atenna. Then someone else says he loses 5 cm each witout them.

While playing Broken Angel, I noticed that Ed was barely taller than an drum of oil. I wonder if this was a mistake on the designers' part, because with any of those heights, he should have been taller than it.
ACacdragonmaster on February 22nd, 2005 05:58 pm (UTC)
The chart someone posted before has him at 4' 11". Still pretty short, in other words. *wonders if Ed will be exactly Kenshin's height when he finishes growing*
tsukisprite on February 22nd, 2005 08:05 pm (UTC)
Dang he's taller then me...4'4" 'really feels small' ;_;
mikkeneko on February 22nd, 2005 11:06 pm (UTC)
I honestly think that the automail is the primary cause of Ed's shortness. It's invasive, it's heavy, and it's trauma on the body, all of which can inhibit growth. His lifestyle and diet -- completely ignoring the issue of milk, which is not really that much of a growth factor, do you really imagine that an 11-year-old left to feed himself is going to know or care enough to make sure he gets all the nutrients and vitamins he needs? -- probably aren't helping, but I'd peg the automail as the culprit.

Of course, it doesn't help much that Ed's posture is fairly bad. Hard to tell if that's also because of the automail, or just teenage slouch. But I did notice *SPOILERS FOR END OF SERIES* that after Ed's full body is restored to him, when we see him with his shirt off he appears distinctly taller than he did before, a phenomenon which I mostly attribute to him being able to stand up straight for the first time in five years.

Mikkeneko has some really good points. I mean, even aside from the whole automail, he doesn't exactly eat well.

Also, look at him! You can take into account that it's not as if he's a very solid guy. He's while he is short, he is also pretty thinish and his whole body is small to that proportion. I'd say that even not factoring in the automail (and without it yes he does look a bit taller) Ed's a pretty petite person. Not to mention with walking next to his 7" brother and having everyone else follow the one of the general 'rules' of manga ("make sure that the short main-ish character is constantly brought to surface about his/her height") helps with the whole image of tiny!Ed.

Genes, plus possible growth hormone deficiency. This is my EDUCATED guess.

I do not think automail really can make a person that short. At all.
mikkeneko on February 23rd, 2005 09:27 pm (UTC)
What about diet & lifestyle?
