Very strange observation. Did they just forget the zipper/clasp thing on Ed's black jacket in episode one, or what? It's not there in the screen caps I've made. o_Ox Odd.

The zipper was in the earlier Ed's outfit (when he was 12) so you can see it in the flashback episodes. He doesn't wear it in the present (when he's 15).

Yes, but there's a clasp. The zipper changed into the clasp, and it's not present at all in the first episode. Confuses me greatly. @_@x;

Of course, since that same jacket was all torn up in episode 2 maybe it just had buttons or something. But gah, talk about messing with my head. *holds head*

Isn't it a different shirt? It's tucked in rather than put over his undershirt-thing that the one with the clasp does.

I bet he could retransmute clothes to their original form easily. :) Probably does wonders with laundry.

I think I got it...
I've been looking through screencaps, and it seems that Ed had his zipper-jacket in Episodes 1-10, or in other words, all through the flashbacks until the events of Episode 1 and 2. Afterwards, he gets the jacket with the clasp. Since the zipper-jacket got all ripped up after Episodes 1 and 2, I suppose we can assume he got a new one. ^_^
Oh yeah, and his black jacket wasn't Ed's only piece of clothing to change. His red jacket changed too. In episodes 1-10, his red jacket had two black buttons on the front. Now in the present, it is buttonless. Did he get a new red jacket too?
Hmmm, or maybe he just transmuted a new jacket. After all, it's gotta be difficult to find a jacket of the exact same hue that has the same crucified serpent symbol on the back. (Unless its like a fashion statement in that world... O_o)
Btw, he's wearing the buttonless-red-jacket and clasp-black-jacket in both the opening songs. I'm too lazy to check the ending songs, but I assume they're the same.

Re: I think I got it...
Great observations. It's just in the first episode, there was no zipper at all.

No zipper, tucked in Another design thing, the buttons you spoke of are on the red coat in this episode. But not in the next (linear) episode. o_O

And not tucked in. Buttons on coat.

The animators remembered to bring it full circle with the correct top. Couldn't see if there were buttons on the coat.

That last one proved it was intentional, but cheez. No fair messing with my head... x___x

The claspless jacket was present in manga chapters 1 and 2, then it mysteriously changes into one with a clasp in chapter 3 (I'm pretty sure chap 3 take place directly after the events of chaps 1 & 2). The zipper jacket was an anime add-in.

*scratches head* Maybe Arakawa gave Ed a slight change in design on the fly, and the anime stayed loyal to the detail?
