What's Hohenheim's connection to the military?
I've been watching the earlier episodes again recently, now that the dubs are available, and something occurred to me.

In episode 3, Roy told Pinako that the military had been searching for Hohenheim for a long time. But what was Hohenheim's connection to the military?

When I'd just started watching the series I though maybe he had been a State Alchemist (partly because Ed and Al's mom was watching the wounded soldiers through the window) who'd gone AWOL or MIA, but I somehow doubt that now.

So why would the military be looking for him?
I have some of my own theories, but what do you guys think?

...you have seen the end of the series, right? Know who is in the military and who is connected to it and their connection to Hoho? Yeah? That's why.

Well *I* have seen the whole thing and I still don't get a clear answer.

Dante controls Pride, aka Teh Fuhrer. She needs the philstone if she wants to continue her somewhat eternal life. She needs Hoho-pappy (or his sons it would seem) to make one for her. Is it not reasonable that she would use the huge military resources at her fingertips to look for this missing person?

It could be that Dante was using Pride and the military to look for him?

Though, I have vague suspicions that she had something to do with Trisha's death. It's never explictly stated, but I would NOT put it past Dante to cause sickness in a woman she was jealous of.

Hmm, interesting idea. *shoots bunnies*

Yeah, and that scene in the rain with half-formed Sloth? Dante says something like "I knew that this would happen, because they are his children," doesn't she?
Marikaitou_marina on January 6th, 2005 06:59 pm (UTC)
She was probably refering to the fact that they attempted to transmute their mother, as Hohenheim tried with Envy all those years ago.

That was one of the lines that made me somewhat suspicious.

Yeah. She probably meant that she knew Hohenheim's children would definitely have the power necessary to create a homunculus, rather than just kinda going splat against the wall. She could well have caused Trisha's death with the aim to have Trisha become a homunculus, just to shove it in Hohenheim's face.

Ee, very nice... any thoughts on how she could've given Trisha the illness, though?
Marikaitou_marina on January 6th, 2005 08:15 pm (UTC)
Well, she put Rose in a trance, who knows what else she's capable of? Who's to say that alchemy can't cause mutations that could lead to disease/cancer/etc.

*joins Hime in shooting the bunnies* Don't you guys ever get tired of inspiring stories? It is very time consuming.

Wasn't it alchemy that caused the sickness in episode 35?
Markamzrigh on January 7th, 2005 01:49 am (UTC)
I don't think it was alchemy that caused the epidemic, as it was Envy who caused it to spread through the village. Since the Homonculi (with one exception, of course) cannot use alchemy, it must have been something else.

Not to say that Dante wasn't somehow responsible for Trisha's death, of course. After hearing it, I rather like that theory.

Hmm...hadn't thought Dante would have Pride use the military's resources for that, but she was in love with the guy, so I guess she might have done.
Also think I recall her saying he took the Stone, so that would give her more reason to have the military chase him.
Sorry, just thought it's be interesting topic for discussion.

Also was vaguely inspired to try writing a pre-series fic about why they were after him, maybe even with Mustang meeting Hohenheim briefly, but I gues it probably wouldn't work.

I just figured that since Dante was controlling the homunculi that she was having Pride order the military to search for Hohenheim. He went missing for a long time so she searched for him to complete her soul transfering plan and all that. I don't believe that Hohenheim actually had any true connections with the military except through Dante's influence.

Hhm. I always had the idea that Hohenheim worked for the miliatry for a while, but once Pride took charge, he left, recognizing the man for what he was. *shrugs* Just a thought.

I thought Hohenheim was a State Alchemist?

Or did I get my facts mixed up?

no, no, that's what i thought too @_@
