Official Episode 8 "Philospher's Stone" Dub reaction post. Put them all here. :D

o_O @ Barry's voice.

Funi sure likes spoiling the surprise >_>;...reminds me of what's-her-name from the Majihal episode.

I liked it. Barry was a little hard to listen to, and Winry sounds a bit too old, but I think this is the first episode I was able to sit through with minimal wincing. I just wish Al would stop sounding like he's giving a speech to his class during the narraration bits. ^^;;.

Here's to hoping the rest of the episodes are this good!

I still don't like Mustang or Hughes' voices. I don't think I ever will. Barry was... weird.. but he is, so I guess that's okay? I like Winry about as much as I ever liked her, which wasn't much to begin with.. And I agree with Al sounding like he's giving a speech in first grade.

Vic's doing a great job with Ed. That one line cracked me up. XD;
J-chanshoujokakumei on January 1st, 2005 09:40 pm (UTC)
I agree completely. He's absolutely perfect at the nonchalant, flippant remarks that Ed's good at, and he can pull off the drama passably well too. I honestly can't think of anyone I'd rather hear as Ed in English. XD

A beautiful action-centric episode.

I also like how Winry was checking out the big big truck (sorry EK) at the end of Act 1, and that the music during that part stayed whimsical instead of ominous. I raised an eyebrow around that part - apparently I put 2 and 2 together by the end of Act 1. Nice lead in to Act 2.

How Ed went from despair to hope in Act 2 was just amazing. Also nice job by the voice actors again. Stellar job by Vic again. I was *this* close to crying, feeling that sorry for Ed in Act 2.

Fine episode again. Nice job all around to everybody.

- I missed the first half - T__T

But Vic's voice is very nice. It's getting better each episode. And the screaming parts were pretty nice- I winced not once.

=\ I really liked Hughes' voice when I first heard it, but I'm more 'meh' towards it now. T_T

I'm beginning to really love Edward's voice actor. =D

I pretty much sat through the episode feeling bad for Edward. Especially at the end. I wanted to give him a hug. >>;

Barry made me go o__O and I couldn't help but think of Silence of the Lambs. ~_~

The running and chasing made me think of Texas Chainsaw Massacre for some reason.......

I kept giggling >>;; ^_^;;

I swear... Barry is voiced by the person that does Yuki in the dub for Fruits Basket >>;;

I laughed at that >>;; It was funny.

And I giggled while Barry was chasing Ed, who was screaming ^_^;;;;

Go figure a Barry fangirl would giggle insanely during episode eight X3 And they mentioned Barry's wife! X3~

I went and checked. Barry is voiced by KYO from furuba! Not yuki

People on the [as] forums said it was the main character from Case Closed. I've never watched that show tho seeing that it never can hold my attention longer than 3 minutes..

Episode error/correction
Heh, I'm just gonna mention this now before someone else points it out and makes a fuss...

At one point in the episode, a character refers to Hughes as 'colonel'. However, Hughes' rank in this episode is major. In fact, he is never a colonel... but anyway, I already ran over to Mike McFarlnad's journal and asked him about it. His response was that it was an error that they'd already caught and fixed, however Cartoon Network must have used the old version. So, it's nothing to worry about it, as the problem has basically already been noticed and taken care of.

Re: Episode error/correction
thanks for saying that. I caught it while I was watching, but it slipped my mind. I was like "WTF? Someone wasn't paying attention here..."

Gah, I missed the first showing of ep8! And it's one of my favorite episodes! ah sigh.. So I dug around in the [adult swim] forum. That place makes me laugh ^_^. I know, it's mean to laugh at people who don't know they're making stupid assumptions that will never exist. But I laugh anyway. Were we really this dull when the episodes first came out?

Ah, and this one person on there saying that this is becoming a predictable series. And I think to myself, did I predict the final outcome of this series? Oh man, no way. No way at all! Individual episodes? Yeah, some of them were predictable. But the whole series? I have to argue on that. Of course I can't argue that point with a [as] fan without laying out a cake of spoilers...

Ed's voice actor is getting more into the part. He pulled off the end of the episode beautifully. I still like Paku Romi's performance better overall, but I don't think we could have asked for a better English language Ed.

Al still sounds like a Peanuts character -- the actor doesn't seem to be as deeply into the part as Ed, and that may because of his age. While the idea to cast an actual child in the part might have seemed like a good one in terms of authenticity, I'm wondering whether they would have been better off getting a woman who specializes in boy voices instead. I'm concerned about how this kid is going to handle the aftermath of the 5th Laboratory.
Brakus: FMAbrakusjs on January 2nd, 2005 12:41 am (UTC)
Actually I prefer Al's voice (Aaron Dismuke) performance to the Japanese voice. I think it gives a more solid contrast between he and Ed's characters. It gives Al a more level-headed, innocent quality about him. Given that Al is younger than Ed, I'd say Aaron Dismuke is a pretty good fit for the character. In this case I'd prefer a young boy doing the role than an adult male/female sounding like a young boy (Greg Ayres, Tiffany Grant, et al.)

I really enjoyed this episode, actually. Terror!Ed always makes me make this face: ;___; and I think Vic did a very good job with err.. terror noises, haha.

Barry's woman voice was amusingly transvestite-y.. bah. But crazy!Barry was awesome.

I still lurrrrve Hughes' voice, though. Roy's great too, of course. Al's VA didn't seem quite as into it this time, but eh. I still like him.

I very much enjoy the dub. :3
Samsamaside on January 1st, 2005 11:04 pm (UTC)
The first scene dialouge was kinda.... blech. That was probably my one major problem with this episode. It was just kinda forced and didn't fit well. I liked Roy's changed dialouge confronting Ed in the alley way though. That was okay.

Vic did GREAT as Ed this episode. I mean, wow. I liked his voice acting but was a little concerned about the age thing.... this episode fixed it though. I am now in love with Vic's Edward.

BARRY! ::glomp:: The chick voice was iffy but the man voice was brilliant. I love that guy.

Riza's voice.... meh. I think I'll get into it more as it goes a long.

Bradley sounds like a Sean Connery impersonator. ^.^ I <3 it.

Winry was way too old sounding but I guess we can be comforted by the fact that she'll grow into her voice acting so all is good.

They messed up Hughes's rank. Major angry point for me. Argh.

Other than that, great episode. Still one of my favorite. ^.^

::fondles Barry plushie::

Someone already took the Hughes rank complaint to Mike of the FMA staff and apparantly they caught and fixed that mistake but not in time to get the correction to AS

That's exactly what I was thinking. As Act 1 was closing, it slowly dawned on me... JIMMY KUDO IS BARRY! and I went OMG out loud as it went to commercial. Gotta love those weird moments of epiphany when you find out exactly who's voicing a particular character!
